    Stoked for you, mate! Great result. I hope the walk back to your "taxi" was downwind!
    Well done, Mat !!👍

      Ha ha 😂 i couldn’t remember his name and to think how famous he is in fishing too 😂 thanks Dave, I don’t think I could believe it when I hooked it, I was sure it was a grilse but even now I still have this disbelief thing going on! The walk was back into the teeth of the gale, but you know as a fisherman when we get those odd great results, you kind of float back to the car anyway. All the best 👍

    Looks like a river I caught my first ever salmon on Skye. Same pool and weather. 39 years ago. Well done. Felt it.

      Thanks David, great to hear about you getting your first salmon, I remember mine well too. When I moved here in 2006, this pool took a different route, there used to be another sea pool but eventually the bank burst and the river now follows a different route, the old sea pool only receives water in big floods or high tides. But the pool is now just longer which is great, the start of the pool in the video is still pretty much the same as how it’s been all the time I’ve lived here. I bet that was some experience getting your first there , all the best 👍

    Im in the Highlands and loved fishing little spate rivers and pulling out some huge fish back in the day. This looks more like the west coast to me. Well done pal, every fish is a win.👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Thanks John, yes it’s the west coast. I’m sure there will be bigger ones about sneaking through, but that’s been the kind of stamp of most of the sea trout/finnock I’ve caught this season. The best thing is how chunky they’ve been, fingers crossed I manage to get a few more before the season is out. All the best 👍

    Nicely done Mat and a great video too. Looked like some seal damage but no idea what the red marks on the underbelly would be. The weather changes like that up here too and you handled the windy conditions very well. Lovely clear water to fish. Thanks for another great upload. See you soon!

    • @highlandfishingdiary8818
      @highlandfishingdiary8818  Před 19 dny

      Yes, definitely seal damage but not surprising given the numbers of seals I saw when fishing the estuary earlier in the season. It was the redness that concerned me more which was why I wanted images to send. They went to FMS so hopefully it’s a very small piece of evidence if this is part of just one more hurdle our salmon are now facing.
      Very much looking forward to meeting you soon, glad you enjoyed the video and as always thanks for the support.

    Superb well done on the Grilse getting the take as well. Some wind that as well just shows to never give up really well done. Its called red vent and unfortunately fairly common but doesnt seem to cause major issues with the fish.

    • @highlandfishingdiary8818
      @highlandfishingdiary8818  Před 18 dny

      Really appreciate that and thanks for the info regarding the redness, fingers crossed despite obviously being in the wars it makes it upstream safely.
      I only manage to get the takes because my trips this season have usually been short. Like this one I was fishing less than an hour so I can just film the whole thing. It’s obviously more difficult if you are fishing half a day or more. The new camera I got is the DJI osmo one and most reviews said the batteries last really well and they do, I have managed with the 3 it came with so far but if I get a longer trip out it’s not as easy to get the take. I have a battery bank and it has a handy charging case for the 3 batteries I’ll probably end up taking that.
      All the best, hope you are still getting amongst the fish over there 👍

    Well done sir the red belly was showing up on a few fish last season on the bigger rivers last year but nobody seems to know exactly what it is

    • @highlandfishingdiary8818
      @highlandfishingdiary8818  Před 19 dny +2

      Cheers Neil, the biologist at the River’s Trust said it is red skin disease and sent the pictures off to Fisheries Management Scotland. It really is a struggle for these iconic fish hopefully it is not spreading but I guess at least knowing where it is showing up might help in a small way. I hope the fish manages to carry on up the river, the plus is it fair shot off once I let it go, more so than fish in better nick. Just have to keep my fingers crossed and also hope there are other fish that have taken advantage of all the rain and made it safely upstream. All the best 👍

      Thank you, it’s always a special moment when you connect with a salmon, or a sea trout for that matter. I wasn’t too hopeful but yes it shows you never know if you don’t try and also sometimes not having a lot of time to fish doesn’t mean you won’t catch. As I’ve fished here quite a while now, you get to know some of the lies and I guess it puts the odds very very slightly in your favour at certain times. I just hope the fish manages to go on in it’s journey successfully, they have a lot to contend with. Yes I’ll be going for a cast when time allows and maybe I might get lucky again. Hope your fishing is going well, all the best 👍

      Ha it was bloody wild and I was properly losing my cool with it about half way down the run, far too X rated 😂 worked out in the end though a very happy moment getting both fish in that. I got close last Friday, again only time for the one pool, raised a grilse once to the fly as I skated it in, then lost a sea trout and then had a follow and boil on the swing and hang. That was the first I’d seen on that river which was cool, an exciting 45 mins and hopefully I’ll get another go this week. All the best to you too Toby, tight lines.

      The Rivers Trust were sure it was a wild fish as no other indications, we had some escapes back end of last season with unusual spotting marks on the gills sadly and it’s just one more thing against our wild stocks. Always going to err on it being wild and return it unless it was really obvious from the info we are told to go off for identifying escapees 👍

      @@gordonmackenzie7523 ok I misunderstood. I’ve come across nets in rivers in the past (not recently) and removed them, obviously it goes on same as poaching. As an small angling club we do what we can, at sea though things are harder to police. They’re hard enough to on the rivers, but even when people have been caught in the past the ramifications must not be enough to stop them or act as a deterrent to others. Hope your season is going ok.

      Yes, seal damage but it was the red underside that I was most concerned about. The seals come in very close here so it’s no surprise about the marks on the flank and dorsal damage. I just hope it does beat the odds and also the plentiful rain in August has given safe passage to the salmon and sea trout than may have also run up the river. All the best 👍
