秩父地方の総鎮守、秩父神社の年に一度の大祭。
全国の古いお社は、おおよそ土地の神話的風土をその社地と祭礼とで体現してきているもので、秩父神社もまた関東屈指の古社として、よく秩父盆地の生活風土を昔ながらの神話的世界に包み込んで、今はとかく薄れがちな故郷の風貌をなおも色濃く伝えています。
Chichibu Night Festival
This is the annual festival of Chichibu Shrine, the chief deity of the Chichibu region.
Chichibu Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in the Chichibu Basin in the Kanto region, and it is also one of the oldest shrines in the Chichibu region, and it has been enveloped in a mythological world of the Chichibu Basin, and it still strongly conveys the atmosphere of its hometown, which tends to fade nowadays.
この大祭を彩る祭礼行事は、重量感あふれる豪華な笠鉾と屋台とが、勇壮な太鼓囃子のリズムに乗って曳きまわされ、屋台歌舞伎や曳き踊りを上演することに加えて、冬の寒空に贅沢なほどの打ち上げや仕掛けの大花火を競演することでよく知られています。しかし実際は、いずれも秩父神社の夜の神幸祭にともなう「付けまつり」、つまり付帯の神賑わい行事として、江戸時代の後期から明治・大正にかけて盛んになったものにほかなりません。
そして、その核をなす祭神出御の神事は、はるか古代に発祥した地元風土の神を祭る形式を今に伝える、はなはだ貴重な伝承祭祀なのです。そこで、この伝統文化の継承に意義ありと認められたからこそ、国の「重要有形・無形民俗文化財」やユネスコの「無形文化遺産」として指定されたのです。
The festive events of this grand festival are well-known for the extravagant and luxurious fireworks display in the cold winter sky, in addition to the yatai kabuki and hiki odori performances, in which the heavy and gorgeous kasaboko floats and yatai floats are pulled around to the rhythm of a heroic taiko music performance. In reality, however, these festivals are nothing more than "tsukematsuri," or supplementary festivities that accompany the Chichibu Shrine's nighttime Shinto rituals, and which flourished from the late Edo period through the Meiji and Taisho eras.
The Shinto ritual of deifying the deities that forms the core of the festival is an extremely valuable traditional ritual that conveys to the present the form of worship of local deities that originated in ancient times. It is precisely because this traditional culture has been recognized as significant for its transmission that it has been designated as an "Important Tangible and Intangible Folk Cultural Property" by the national government and as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage" by UNESCO.
夜祭の由来
現行十二月三日の夜祭をめぐっては、今でも地元に語り伝えられる微笑ましい神話があります。それが語るには、神社にまつる妙見菩薩は女神さま、武甲山に棲む神は男神さまで、互いに相思相愛の仲であります。ところが残念なことに、実は武甲山さまの正妻が近くの町内に鎮まるお諏訪さまなので、お二方も毎晩逢瀬を重ねるわけにもゆかず、かろうじて夜祭の晩だけはお諏訪さまの許しを得て、年に一度の逢引きをされるというものです。
この祭には、まず二日の晩に「お諏訪渡り」と言って、神幸路の途中にある諏訪社に予め神幸祭執行を報告する神事があり、翌三日の晩には、神幸行列を先導する六台の笠鉾と屋台も、この諏訪社に近い地点を通過するときには、勇壮な屋台囃子の鳴りをひそめて静かにする例が守られてきました。
たしかに武甲山は、その山麓に対面して鎮座する秩父神社の、いわば神体山に当たります。盆地の南面を遮って一千米ほどそそり立つ山容は、山麓に拡がる秩父市街を見守る巨大な屏風をなすが如くであります。そしてこの夜祭には、市街中央の本社から祭神が武甲山に向けて出立され、この山を正面に望んで「お花畑」という名をもつ高台の「お山」神事によって、神体山に還り鎮まるという古代祭祀の様式が今に潜んでいるのです。
秩父地方開闢の頃に秩父国造が本社祭神を八意思兼神に定め、やがて中世に妙見菩薩がそれに習合します。そのように本社に常在する祭神が出来、いつしか本社の女神とお山の男神が別の神格とに分かれたことで、夜祭も男女二神逢瀬の神事となりました。しかし、それでもなお、古代祭祀の原型をとどめる徴があって、それが唯一、神幸行列の先頭を行く大榊に巻きつけられた藁造りの龍神に求められます。
Origin of the Night Festival
There is a funny myth that is still passed down in the local community concerning the current December 3rd Night Festival. The story goes that Myoken Bosatsu, the bodhisattva worshipped at the shrine, is a goddess, and the deity who dwells on Mount Mukou is a male deity, and that the two are in love with each other. Unfortunately, however, the wife of Mt. Mukoyama is the deity Suwa, who resides in a nearby town, so the two cannot have sexual encounters every night.
On the evening of the second day of the festival, there is a ritual called "Osuwa-matari," in which the execution of the festival is reported to the Suwa Shrine on the way to the shrine. It is true that Mt.
Mukou, which is the sacred mountain of the Chichibu Shrine that sits at the foot of the Suwa Shrine. The mountain rises up to about 1,000 meters, blocking the southern side of the basin and forming a huge folding screen that watches over the city of Chichibu, which spreads out at the foot of the mountain. During this night festival, the festival deities depart from the main shrine in the center of the city toward Mt. Mukou, and return to the mountain to rest in the "Oyama" ritual on the hill named "Ohanabatake" with the mountain in front of them.
At the time of the creation of the Chichibu region, the Chichibu Kunizou designated the head shrine as the deity of the eight wills, which was later joined by Myoken Bosatsu in the Middle Ages. The night festival, too, became a ritual of meeting between two deities, male and female. However, there are still signs of the original ancient ritual, and these are found only in the straw dragon god wrapped around the osakaki that leads the procession of the gods.
