I was simply implying Final Fantasy VII, makes you question Avalanche and our party we play as are any different than Shinra. No matter how much blood on their hands Shinra has the party has blood on their hands too. It's meant task the question are we any different than our enemies if we kill innocent people just showing up to work just like them? That's what I was trying to say. It's meant to stop and make you think is there ever a political cause worth killing innocent people over. Something of note I'm specifically talking crony capitalism or perhaps corpratism being bad. I want to emphasize capitalism in of itself is a net positive and is the reason we can do things. I think what Final Fantasy VII portrays is completely buyout and forcing of buying a specific product. I cut out the free energy portion due to pacing issues in the video but these big monopolies have leveraged their power to crush any competition for competitive energy that could dare replace fossil fuels. It's the rich leveraging the government for favors that is the problem not capitalism itself. How do we regulate it or stop it for a free capitalist society to work is the better question. I feel like Final Fantasy VII asks how do we stop the copratization of everything and how do we stop it? Can we even stop it?
I agree, a free market is a better term, I’m not sure we ever actually had a free market system. Capitalism is a term coined by Marxists intended to sound bad. What we have now is more like crony capitalism or even fascism. Fascism has also been warped to mean far right ideology, its original definition was more of “the government controls everything and you can’t disagree.” I don’t think we are far from something like that, no matter who is in charge. Everyone today loves to bash “capitalism” but they don’t realize whatever we have going on is pretty far removed from a free market. FF7 and its story definitely remains relevant today if not more so.
This was a hard video to make because it got so in depth in political systems everyone has an opinion on. It's definitely more crony capitalism. I don't want to get too political but if things don't change we are not far off from a surveillance state that terrifies me.
Even though FF8 was my first Final Fantasy, and still my favorite, FF7 is close second. It's amazing how they blended so many themes and ideas in a coherent story. Aerith's twist is legendary too, if you had any attachment to her, the twist is a total gut punch, the more fond you were the harder it felt. The gameplay aged nicely, and while it is somewhat rough around the edges, you can boot it up and have a total blast. The staple of a great game.
Idk if you've played Rebirth or if you even agree with the direction the Remake series is going, but If you haven't played it and are open to it (assuming you've got the console, of course) I think you'll be very pleased to find that some of the things you mentioned wishing could have been expounded on further, have now BEEN expounded upon to dramatic effect. There are some new bits of lore to add context surrounding one of the things you said you found pretty emotionally impactful from the OG.
Okay, finishing the video answered some of those questions. I liked the psychology points and the theological symbolism analysis too. All nicely worked out!
I did play the remake and wasn't a fan of the ending. It made me hesitant to pick up the Rebirth I might when all three parts and DLC are out when I can dive into and review it as a complete trilogy. I'm still up I'm the air lol.

I've been waiting for this retrospective, and it certainly did NOT disappoint. :) You are so right about how FF7 is so much more relevant today even. We don't have fair elections in the U.S., and it's a huge problem. And the politicians answer to corporations instead of the people because of it. I won't keep talking about this because I know Google/youtube censors political comments, but long story short, it's great to know that you get it. :)
On a sidenote there are loads of people who feel this way but are afraid to say anything. We are the sane ones, but also the only ones who hopefully can break people out of the spell they are under.
17:25 whats the proof Avalanche killed innocent people? I know they blow up reactors. But I dont understand how civilians are affected. Does the explosion kill them? What dialouge are you looking at? Much thanks
You don't see anyone or persay any dialogue, but seeing as Final Fantasy VII functions much like our world would people be working in those reactors, making sure they ran and worked. Oddly enough one of the things I enjoyed most about the remake were the people on the street talking about the people working in the reactor who died or the person who comments they chose not to go to work today. Final Fantasy VII does show there is a working thriving economy who works in the upper plates. Those people would have been working those facilities.
