  • From www.swimmingpo... this video talks about three less common reasons why your swimming pool water might turn green. Visit the link above to see the more common reasons that pools turn green.
Phosphates in pool water absolutely can contribute to green water even though you appear to be maintaining your water chemistry correctly otherwise. Phosphates are important enough that we measure them in parts per billion in pool water, so elevated phosphate levels can absolutely contribute to green water as they act like a super food for algae and plant matter growth.
If the interior surface of your swimming pool is rough to the touch the this means you have reached the end of the service life and the surface will need to be refinished. This is new gel coat in a fiberglass pool, a new vinyl liner in a liner pool, and a new interior surface (like plaster) in a concrete pool. If the surface profile of your pool is rough, this provides far too many locations for bacteria and organic debris to hide and reside, and makes chemical treatments and brushing ineffective, resulting in more likelihood for green pool water.
If you have a failure with your pool filter this might not always be plainly obvious to you. In some cases filters can fail and allow debris to continue to circulate through the pool instead of removing it from the system as per the design intention. All forms of pool filter can have failures like this, though the nature of the way the filter fails depends on whether you have DE, sand or a cartridge filter.

I purchased a home 4 years ago and it has a pool that didnt look very well maintained. Little did i know at the time that it suffered from all 3 of these isses at the same time (very high phosphates, failing sand filteation material, and very porous plaster lining). The pool was turning green every other week. Since then filter material has been changed out, water was almost completely changed, pump and above ground plumbing replaced and used the BBB method. Last year, after adding a salt cell, the pool never went green once. Plaster is still in desperate need of replacement but sweat equity is keeping that at bay for the time being. Thank you for getting the word out about these problems so others dont have to go through what I did!

Here in Northern California, I've come across at least 3 pools that are on well water with high iron deposits due to the drought. Chlorines reaction to iron is to turn green or rust brown.

We have a concrete pool. It's got a broomed finish. My husband says you will slip and fall if it's slick. What do you think?

I'd listen to the pool guy , also in Salt water tanks you want as many pours surface aeras as possible for bacterial growth to keep a good economy system , but that brimmed finish is perfect for bacteria to grow on
