Hey, really cool to see someone else from my generation discussing old movies like this on CZcams! Great review. I personally just ordered this disc and am really excited to check it out.
I'm old enough to remember seeing this film projected in Cinerama back in the 1960s. It had a profound effect on my young mind back then and sadly disappeared from view in the intervening years. The Cinemascope print that TCM has shown is almost unwatchable. This stunning Blu Ray restoration finally brought the film back to me!
I’m so glad to hear that! And I’m so jealous that you got to see this in Cinerama. That must’ve been an amazing experience.
@@FilmsByColor it is an unequaled visual experience due to the curved screen employed. Imax is the closest thing we have today.
Born in 1959, bits and pieces of this film are among the very first things I remember 😊
How the West Was Won was a year later, with three directors. I saw both in Cinerama in 1962 and 1963.
Oh, my Godness.. Such a nice shelving. I'm able to see even Ben-Hur Blu-ray at the very top. Congratulations on your tidiness. Mine is, shall We say.. A little untidy. I enjoyed watching your Video.. Cinerama always has a touch of Magic around. Keep on posting more Videos and Greetings from Spain 🔆
Saw this at age six in original Cinerama run. It was very long for a child and rather dark on screen. They issued piano sheet music for theme, which I found and bought fifty years later!
Thanks for your great review. I have ordered this movie on E'bay, should arrive soon. Classic film buff and always loved the Cinerama process. I have "How the West Was Won" and it also has the standard wide-screen version and Smilebox version on separate discs. The restoration on it was fantastic, it is beautiful to watch. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 👍
When picking up "How The West Was Won" make sure you purchase the Digi-Book version. That is the only one that has a copy of the film in Smilebox.
Oh cool, thanks a lot! I didn't know that. I'll be sure to track down that release.
I just found that Digibook and I bought it
My son is obsessed with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I showed him Doctor Dolittle (1967) and Oliver 4k - Both incredible to look at!! I might grab this one as well. Thanks for the awesome review!
Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the fantastic recommendations! I've had my eye on that Oliver 4k for a while, but I didn't even know about that Doctor Dolittle. I'll have to pick those up soon.
It wasn’t once upon a time in the west, it was how the west was won.
Yeah I totally flubbed that up in this video. Thanks for the correction.
I gotchu bro.
The widescreen version has nothing cut off. The start with that and the simulate the curved screen. It is explained in full in the restoration program.
the cover Art doesnt really do the film justice, it deserves better,
it also gives the impression (Disney style) that its a cartoon
Nice review... I agree it's not a great film, but fun. Just watched the Smilebox version. Fantastic presentation. Make sure to watch the restoration documentary.
Thanks! I definitely want to check out that documentary soon.
I just bought a 45rpm of this movie. Well music from this movie. I got it just because it was strange, it's not gonna be here for a week. But now I want the movie!
I'm glad it came out on blu ray. For years I have been watching it on a bootleg DVD and before that on Laser disk.
Mine is an ordinary dvd version and an import. NOT a blue ray copy, as it was not available on bl ray at the time, it must be great if the picture is a restored print. I hope that one day they will put out remastered versions of other George pal films, especially DR. LAU and THE TIME MACHINE
this is GREAT charismatic entertainment isnt it?
once again completely original, and different, with the clever use of...mini story's and a clever lead in yarn about the actual authors, rather than just one fairy tale, there is also good use of music, which never feels out of place in fairy tale mythology, this is 60s experimental cinema at it's best.
have you also seen- 7 FACES OF DR LAU, TOM THUMB, & THE TIME MACHINE all George Pal films, I'd also recommend 1963s JACK THE GIANT KILLER most if not all of these should appeal if you like BROS. GRIMM.
I knew/know that Russ Tamblyn played Tom Thumb in the 1958 movies but did NOT know (until today) that he played him also in this one (in the scene were Wilhelm Grimm is ill in bed)
I’ve been trying to find this movie for years. I’ve found a dvd I can order from America but I don’t know if it will play on Australian DVD players, they usually have different formats.
You neglected to mention Barbara Eden?
What make this a real big deal was the fact that the negative color film was semi damage and it would of costed up to 2 million dollars for chemical restoration ,since it would require the use of the three strip negative to make a print.2019 Dave S. Showed Warner brothers that it could be restored cheaply through digital.Time Warner was pressured for years to fix this .They caved in. Unfortunately they did not cave in to put the restored version of mysterious Island in it's original 90 percent technicolor that I think was available at the eastman storage vault.
I think you mean How the West Was Won (1962)? At least that’s what it says on imbd.
Whoops! Yes, that’s exactly what I meant. Can’t believe I made that mistake. Thanks for the correction.
How the West was Won.
Charming review.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it.
