Cunard DRESS CODE on the QM2 Cruise Ship - Sunday Sofatime - Will I Need a Tuxedo on the Queen Mary?

  • The Queen Mary 2 from Cunard cruise lines has a reputation of being very elegant and luxurious. Before our cruise from Southampton to Hamburg, I was worried about the dress code. I don't own a tuxedo and a few of my suits don't fit me anymore :-P. Let's take a dive into the dress code onboard and I will tell you about our experience.

Getting dressed for dinner is ok for me on a cruise. It offers the opportunity to freshen up and try a different style for evening indoors vs daytime relaxing by the pool. A couple basic pairs of black pants with interchangeable dressy tops would suffice for a week- long trip.

It's a very me-first society we live in now. Considering how you will contribute to others' experience--by your clothing choice, manners, etc--has been sacrificed to the cult of I'll-do-whut-uh-want. Now we have people expecting to wear a t-shirt and sweatpants while receiving 5-star service in a luxurious environment.

I did an 8 day cruise on the QM2 in 2018 (from Quebec City to New York City). I found the ship to be very comfortable and I enjoyed the beautiful, classic, deco-style murals and bas-relief wall decorations. I too had been concerned about the possibility of having to wear formal wear on certain days, but even back then; the dress code was similar to what you reviewed in this video. We did not go to any "gala" events, but we did "honor" the slightly upgraded dress code for those evenings. We (2 men) wore dress pants, collared shirt, tie and a blazer on the 2 "formal" nights. After dinner we removed our ties and enjoyed the lounges and bars and we did not feel underdressed or frowned upon. We enjoyed the classic feel of the ship and especially were glad to find quiet areas on the ship where you could listen to music or a singer, but it was not a huge, noisy, overdone production. I would definitely consider doing an ocean crossing on the QM2.

The theater seats could be repaired while sailing as well as new covers for sofa. however painting the exterior is a little more harder on a trans atlantic trip. Also the fact that carneval owns her along with princess both also are having issues. Looks like lack of maintainance on their ships. Compared to RCL and NCL and even MSC who up keep there ships. But have a bucket list is sailing either Q2 or the new ship queen annie out of miami. and a holland ship. @@Jay-vr9ir Mmm... I'm not so sure about your timeline. I recall being on the SS 'Norway' with my parents in the early '90s and, on the formal nights, there wasn't a slob in sight; men in suits, at least; many in tuxedos; the women in cocktail dresses or gowns. Flash forward to 2016, on a formal night aboard MS 'Celebrity Reflection', and I see a guy wearing a baseball cap at dinner in the main dining room; others in t-shirts; even some of the men who managed to put on a blazer (but, no tie) still wore sneakers.
The Uh-WaNt-MuH-FaNcy-PlaCeS-Und-fAnCy-Fud-whAaL-Uh-WaaR-Muh-swEaT-PaUnTs attitude seems to be a relatively new phenomenon; it's emergence appears to have coinced with the rise of teaching children and young people that their personal feelings matter more than anything else in the whole wide universe and social media algorithms that let you hear only your own opinions echoed back at you. In other words, people are losing the ability to think much about anyone other than themselves.
That said, it looks to me as though women are expected to dress themselves up more than men. So often I see a couple out in the evening, the woman's wearing something pretty stylish (though, not formal), often somewhat elegant, and the guy's in just regular, old jeans and the kind of t-shirt I slouch around the house in on Sundays.

Tbh, there are more than enough Las Vegas meets Disneyland style cruises for people to walk around in flip-flops. I myself believe dressing up is a show of respect. I believe that there are still people that also think that one should look representable even for a plane flight, as it used to be (not a tuxedo, but at least a shirt, shoes, pants and a blazer or a smart vest), and would thoroughly enjoy to have at least one cruise ship (ocean liner actually) where some standards are being held and enforced by the crew, where even most casual should be smart casual.

Pool, bar, sundeck all for suite guests only. it's called a ship within a ship concept. tips for travellers has a video out with information on that. seams Cunard is more moderate what the class system is concerned. Even guests in suites have to mingle with the Britannia guests to swim in a pool.

There was no commercial where you said there would be one. :( If you should ever consider sailing with Cunard, again, I hope you get a chance to sail on the Queen Victoria, the reason being that since the White Star Line was ultiimately absorbed by Cunard (the line that built Titanic and her sister ships), Titanic and one of her sister ships sank, the third one was used for a long time, and then eventually dismantled. Since the first class cabins on this ship were identical to the ones on Titanic, they saved one of them and reassemebled it on the Queen Victoria as a curiosity of sorts. I think it is now incorporated in a public area for everyone to see. Just a thought. ;)

Don't do formal nights anymore. Too much luggage. So I would not cruise on Cunard

Yes, there are different ways to pronounce it. Correctly or the wrong way. I guess most people would be annoyed it you repeated pronounced their name incorrectly after they told you how it should be said.
PS it's definitely gala not gay-la

Alas, you, along with the other cruise vloggers that pop up on my feed, all have a strong disconnect to the traditional cruise experience. What i take away from many of your, and the others posts is that the ship board experience is more theme park; engaging in or promoting activities which have zero to do with being on a ship. The more distractions the better. I look at it with this comparison. A true cruise experience is like the best dinner party for 12 people imaginable. Interesting conversations, with funny, clever intelligent people. Good drinks and delicious food in a beautiful atmosphere. You and the other's are instead promoting a rave experience. You continue to encourage and support an onboard experience that does everything in its power to distract passengers from the simple pleasure of life on a ship. Who needs bumper cars, water slides, climbing walls, ice skating etc. And 20 eating options detracts from true passenger interaction. When i started cruising in 1986, every one week cruise hosted 2 formal nights. Dinner was at a fixed time and table. 2 seatings... 6pm and 845. Then a midnight buffet every night. 600 to 1200 passengers.

But isn't it great that the cruise industry is so vast and varied that there are experiences offered for every taste? The way your comment is phrased makes it sound like you think I am somehow "wrong" for preferring a more modern, activity-packed cruise style. Here on the channel, I try to experience many different ships and styles to let people see what it was like through my eyes. You asked "who needs bumper cars, water slides, etc...", well, I do! Millions of cruise passengers a year obviously do. If the cruise industry didn't see a value in including these activities on their ships, they would not be there. NCL, Royal Caribbean, Disney, etc are all successful because they looked at the "traditional" cruise experience that you describe and realised, "This is not enough to stay relevant and competitive. There is a market for MORE." I am happy that you enjoy the low-key, traditional cruise experience, but expecting an entire industry to remain like it was back in 1986 is just not realistic. That's why there is only one QM2. There is no need for more ships that offer this same experience because the interest is not there.

Mmmmm...... let's see..... why don't we just call the Cruise lines and see how they PRONOUNCE their name.... shall we. That SHOULD settle it for all. We should just pronounce the name however they pronounce their name. If a Cruise Line or Company, or what ever it is, pronounces their name a certain way, then that's how I'm going to pronounce it!

You'll know you've been in Germany too long when you can no longer pronounce "squirrel" correctly.

The ship is getting old and boring. Just came back from 16 days Cunard. It degraded a lot. food quality and quantity BAD, no lobster. especially at the Lido. Super short handed. It is at the Carnival cruise style. No dance host, no queens room Hostess, no professional dancer exhibition, etc. will not recommend for this price (we are Diamond on Cunard, not a newbie)

Wearing a tie on a holiday is deal breaker for me. During a holiday I want to binge drink, speak slurred well I wobble into the dining room and struggling to pronounce my next drink. This is something for OAPs and folks who don’t have to dress smart for work. I’m guessing stay at homes Moms will be pushing for this rubbish. To many Karen types on cruises. Same type that want to hold onto Covid restrictions when the virus is over!
