Farewell My Concubine not only won the Palme d'Or at the 46th Cannes Film Festival in 1993, it is also the only Chinese-language film to win this honor to date.
Farewell My Concubine could have become the first Chinese-language film in history to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, but it missed out because of a misunderstanding.
Farewell My Concubine describes two troupe brothers, one is Duan Xiaolou (starring Zhang Fengyi) who plays the role of a student, and the other is Cheng Dieyi (starring Leslie Cheung) who turns into a virgin. Two sworn brothers grew up together in the theater troupe through thick and thin. Their performance of "Farewell My Concubine" was highly praised and won a round of applause in the capital. Out of their love for art, the two agreed to perform "Farewell My Concubine" as a lifelong partner...
