Just plain cheap clear packing tape. I get it at Harbor Freight. The tape holds it together but you also need to help hold things a bit as the cut in that plane progresses. Then I tape it together again and make the cut from the other side. Also, the adhesive on the tape helps lubricate the saw blade keeping it cool and the blade lasts longer.
Hiya Ronald this is absolutely exquisite! I just scrolled my first reindeer (3 days ago) as per your pattern and it looks stunning even though for some reason the antlers and the legs on the left side came out very thin as a result the big front antler tip broke off while sanding but does not take away from the beauty of it so I finished it and put it in the middle of Our dining table over the weekend and it has piqued loads of interest from friends and visitors on Sunday!! Thank you so much for your sharing such a beautiful creation. Looking out for more.
Try tightening your blade a little. Needs to be a new sharp blade. Don't force the cut and try to feed directly into the blade. A left handed person may tend to push harder on one side and a right handed person may tend to push the opposite. If sawdust packs around the blade it can cause it to wander. The large pattern from Matthias Wandel's website is intended for much larger band saw blades. Have fun.
@@RonaldWalters2010 Thanks for your advice. Yes my blade was munted and I should have used more tape. So now we just have a reindeer who has damaged his antler in a fight ;) Actually this was my very first project as I was gifted this machine by my wife for my Birthday a week ago and have been just doing random practice scrolls. One more question: what platform do use to create your templates? Cheers

Go to the description for this video. There you will find a link to the construction article for my small reindeer plus a pattern for a larger version, which can be cut out on the bandsaw. The patterns are free. Merry Christmas Ron Also check out my other two ornament videos: Christmas 3D Wood Ornaments - Compound Cuts on the Scroll Saw Christmas 3D Gingerbread Man Wood Ornament - Compound Cuts on the Scroll Saw
Have you tried one of those patterns that look different depending on the side you are watching it from - like reindeer from one side, Santa from another? It would be a great theme for next video.
I have not seen one of the two-sided designs you refer too. If you can show me an example, I will study it. Thank you for your suggestion. Please tell your friends about my Channel and ask them to “Subscribe”.
You can try enlarging it. I was cutting 1-1/4" thick oak and walnut on my scroll saw yesterday. Make sure the blade is square to the table. Thicker cuts are more difficult as the blade is contacting thicker wood and it is easier for it to jump up and down, which can cause the blade to wander. Having to constantly push down on the thicker work piece is also more tiring. Take it slow... do not force the cut... let the blade do the cutting and hopefully the cuts will remain straight and square to the table. :-) Thicker cuts generate more heat and the blades will wear out faster. Don't forget the packing tape helps lubricate the cut. Have fun. Ron
The information for the blade is given in the description for the video. You may want to try a scroll reverse blade (has some teeth cutting upwards) which helps clear the sawdust. I also have a few videos on cutting Christmas Ornaments on the scroll saw. "Christmas 3D Wood Ornaments - Compound Cuts on the Scroll Saw" Information on the blades used is given in the videos. Also watch the video on cutting wood gear teeth on the scroll saw. Wrap the block with packing tape... that lubricates the blade. The blade needs to be properly tensioned. That takes practice. Do not force the cut... let the blade do the cutting. The blade needs to be perfectly square to the table. You are going to screw some of these up until you develop the proper cutting technique. A video will only show you so much. The rest is up to you to practice, practice, practice until you get it right. Have fun... thanks for watching! Ron
Can you tell me what blades you are using. I have tried every size blade I have and it starts catching when I cut along the long front view side not the side view side. Very frustrating. Thanks.
+frehleycomet Scroll Saw Blade used in the video was a POLAR FD-P No.5 0.041 wide (deep), 0.015 thick 16.5 teeth per inch available from Flying Dutchman. This information is in the video description. Another good blade: Scroll Reverse FD-SR No.5 5” x 0.037 x 0.015 13 tpi / 7 reverse My new favorite: Ultra Reverse FD-UR No.5 5” x 0.037 x 0.015 15tpi / every 3rd reversed. Top of the blade has a crimp so you know which end is the top. A reverse tooth blade helps initiate a cut up from the bottom as well as from the top, which prevents chip out. As shown in the video, always use packing tape around the wood block. It holds the pieces together and lubricates the blade. The rest is proper blade tension and practice. Thanks for watching. Please Subscribe.
A small Map Push Pin or Map Tack with the round plastic bead ends. Small size. Sometimes red is hard to find... then use white and a red magic marker (sharpie). Red plastic is better.
Not sure what your question is. These are the only templates for the deer. Some of my other projects tell you where to get templates as they are not mine to give away free.
+fred jayne Do a google search for "animal compound scroll saw patterns." There are a number of books and websites with patterns but possibly not what you want.
Depends on your experience and what wood is being used. Basswood will cut faster than pine. Probably around 10 minutes to cut it out. Then you need to sand, varnish or lacquer, sand again and then the final coat of varnish or lacquer. Add hanging loop, nose, bow and eyes.

Fantastic.

You make me so nervous watching you do this!
This is a Delta 40-540
Thanks for sharing.
Ron, What type of saw is that? I had a very nice RBI until it burned up in a fire. They are a lot of fun and let you be very creative..
Hello, wich kind of wood are you using. I tried with pine wood and it's not posible to cut it. there is kind of trick to make it softer?
Cut from a clear piece of 2x4 pine. You can use whatever wood you want.
I wish I could purchase these. I just don't have the time to make them!
Parabéns ! Gostei muito .

what kind of tape do you use exactly? it's amazing how it holds the cuts together this perfectly
I love this pattern, but I redesigned the antlers to look like reindeer antlers rather than whitetail deer antlers.
Hello, can I cut a larger version of it on the scroll saw as I do not have a band saw? Just enlarge the pattern? Thank you!

What style of blade do you use to do the compound cuts? I find it a bit difficult to cut the small cuts?

Probably an exercise in losing money. Takes more time than they are worth. This is something you make for yourself or for friends as a present.

Have you used the Delta 40-694?
Jamon Hill No, I have not.
Oh ok, well keep up the good work, my friend. Great job!
how long does it take for each one
