This is the Sadler's Wells production from 1982 of Dame Ninette de Valois' version with Margaret Barberi (Black Queen); David Ashmole (1st Red Knight); David Bintley (Red King); Sherilyn Kennedy (Red Queen); Michael Corder (2nd Red Knight); Roland Price (1st Black Knight); Nicholas Millington (2nd Black Knight) with other dancers from the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet and Orchestra directed Barry Wordsworth. (Video Artists International) It should be noted that various small cuts have been made to some of the movements, so below is a link to the full score version if you need it.

    Recommendation (only): the ballet was composed in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and two years before the second world war. Therefore the proposed scenario of the triumph of death at the end may be read through this historical lens.

    This is generally considered to be one of the earliest important ballets by a British choreographer (despite her French-sounding stage name, Ninette de Valois was born in Ireland). Since the advent of the compact disc, and the waning of the idea that the romanticism of Arthur Bliss' music is 'unfashionable' and consequently uninteresting, it has become much better known.
