Worthy of a boat show appearance no less. Let the rain show us the way. Daring salor varnishing in the sun and Minto-tug.
One thing for sure, is that with your sunny disposition, it will never rain on your Parade Peter.
"I live on a couple of wooden motorcruisers" .....😂
Poem is a little jewel. Lovely.
Your reign over Poem's restoration is heartening, such great progress and care-despite the occasional rain. Cheers.
It’s a delicate balance between being grateful for the rain and thankful for the good weather to get those topcoats on…
Watching you pour the Belgian White made me think of the saying, “when it rains, it pours.” I know it’s for salt, but you get the idea. Regards
You taught an old dog a new trick. But first.... Peom is looking fabulous. I am totally diggin the color of the cockpit soul and foredeck. The gold lettering in her name is really popping with the varnish going on. Now for the trick... I have several pairs of those bar clamps. I have never been immensely impressed with them. They are bulky and don't apply a lot of force. I had never considered (should have read the instructions) reversing the end and clamp on the bar to push as a clamping force. DUH ME. In my defense, I use bar and pipe clamps infrequently. Immediately, several applications, in my work, came to mind. Thank you Peter. 😊
Also remember if you have several you can put more than one slidy bit on one bar
If you can find a piece of metal the right size you can have very long reach with two lever jaws.
I've also fixed them temporarily to pieces of wood in various directions ie acoustic guitar..
An even crazier one is putting the two jaws the opposite sides and then use a piece of wood with holes in or a ring of metal (saucepan) or a wooden frame.
Hope this helps 😻
@@mySeaPrince_ My applications are not so elaborate. But yes, Helpful. If not me, then maybe someone else.
I believe “polymerize” is the word as no catalyst is involved. But most of us understood what you were saying.
The wife and I hope the return of the upper helm shade structure will keep some of the rain off your much beloved head.
Thank you again for sharing your work and life with us, your viewers
Poem is looking so good, just glowing, especially with a sheen of rain on her! Next up: Arctic Star?
I think one of my kittens loves you. She usually has no interest in youtube unless its fish in coral reefs or dolphins, but twice in a row now, when you come on she jumps on my desk and looks at the screen the whole time, and some times tries to pat you.
🐾🐾🐾 🐈
Poem is looking gorgeous 😍
Poem looks as pretty as a picture, well done Peter.cheers,Roly🇬🇧
Poem is looking really good your attention to detail is really paying off Peter.
Excellent video Peter, Poem is looking great with her new coats of varnish. The stain blended very well as well. So much fun to watch the progress
NO RAIN ON YOUR PARADE!!!
As Mads would say “she looks pretty darn spiffy”.😂
Well done Peter, Poem is looking fantastic. Great entertainment.
Peter, you manouvre and doc a boat with your lil "tug" better than most I've seen trying to do the same in their small watercraft lol
I love the way you make that mahogany glisten so much that it's kicked off a new passion of mine and that's finding antique mahogany furniture and refinishing it. Cheers to you, and I hope for an abrupt end to these damaging fires.
This is the Pacific Northwest. It is synonymous with Rain! 🌧🌞☔
Peter let me give you and your viewers some advice.
When moving a vessel such as Poem without power in a restricted area, you should tie your dinghy along side with the rear of the dinghy and outboard AFT of the duck board. That way you can control the direction to the vessel you are moving.
The way you did it gave you absolutely no control over Poem and if the wind had come up she would have taken off and you would have no control and doing what you did gave you zero ability to slow her down.
Don't do that towing thing again. You were just lucky.
slow and steady wins the race Peter. Great work.
Brave with the wood preservative.
Good to see you are doing well and that good work still follows you around.
Oh the rain in the Pacific Northwest. It’s our mainstay, our blessing, and the one thing we have absolutely no control over. It keeps us humble.
Beautiful woodwork Peter!!
At first I thought it would be like towing an eighteen wheeler with a four wheeler.... But that was not the case... Good job Peter...
May you reign forever.
Your boat is beautiful, the stain is so rich.
Poem is looking fantastic.
A day and a half of rain didn't suppress the wildfire danger a great deal, but it sure made the weeds explode in my yard. Peter, you need to challenge Leo to a dingy race. Maybe at the Port Townsend wooden boat show!? Cheers from Sequim.
Rain that’s not rain that’s a sunny day in Port Alberni !
May good fortune rain upon you, Peter!
Glad to see Canada getting some rain
Peter, it's been fun watching you putting the pieces together and arriving at this stage in the restoration. It is a beautiful effort and the boat looks very classy!
Just beautiful. The rain while you stain is really a pain. One gets to thinking “All I want is a shed somewhere, far away from the cold sea air. Oh, wouldn’t it be lovely”… Why do I feel the urge to break into song and dance? Poem looks great. Have you considered abandoning the beta marine and just slap that trolling motor off of Limerick on there? It seems to do the trick on the video. It would be perfect for someone who wasn’t in a hurry to get where they are going.
Gotta love rain
Hi Peter, I just love Pom I can’t wait for you to get the interior done and see what it’s like, but you are doing a fantastic job so far. I’d love to have a boat like that over here in Australia. It is so beautiful and I reckon you could live on it easy keep up the good work. Love your videos love the way you grant and grown and carry on when you’re doing things Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 from the big island 🏝️
What a difference, it’s gorgeous Peter!
Its raining on Lake Erie as well, Peter, also much needed. It will put a damper on the smoke in the air, but also hopefully help with the plague of Cottonwood tree fuzzy seeds we are currently swimming in. Of course it will make my grass grow, and that will require mowing… you remember having to maintain a lawn, I assume? No grass to cut when you live on a boat!
Varnish. Augh! as Snoopy used to exclaim. It's beautiful and terrible, isn't it. Thanks for sharing your hard won secret recipes for wood finishing, Peter. My small sailboats have much less bright wood on them than your lovely cruisers, but, still, one wants to do them proud. All the best to you and yours. Looking forward to seeing you in your element in P.T. at the Festival! == P.S. That last bit of varnishing looked so satisfying that I was hypnotized by your Tom-Sawyer-painting-the-fence show, and wanted to jump through the screen and beg for permission to lay on a coat, myself! 🔥😂👍👍
I am with you on the beneficial effects of the rain on the forest fires! Poem is looking glorious!
Looking good Peter, only an infinite number of coats to go because varnishing a wooden boat is never finished.. My experience varnishing a mahogany cabin house with Epifanes gloss varnish has been that it rolls on beautifully without thinning. Once you get your hand in with the roller you can even get a good finish without tipping. I use a 4" foam roller.
🐾🐾🐾 🐈
I use a foam brush with Epifanes
@@davidjanis1997 So do I on smaller areas.
Just took a sponge bath with an actually sponge on a stick..
Replace my big outside bladder( bed apartment,) with small mobile bladder on right calf..put on clothes nice day later..
Hopefully Canada gets some decent rain and you get enough fine weather to get all your coats on. Catch 22.
Lol, drinking one as I watch. Very good beer.
Those little trolling motors are great. I use one on my own dinghy and stealth along the local rivers here. I'm just as happy rowing though, unless I have to take passengers.
That said, if it's one of the cheaper varieties of trolling motor, speed doesn't have much of an impact on battery life. The slower speeds are merely controlled in stages by a series of resistors, any unwanted energy is spent as heat...
Also, careful wishing for rain during fire season, it can sometimes make the hard working volunteers and firefighters from doing their job properly, such as flying helicopters etc. We had a rather bad fire here back in 2017 and the media were quick to report that the rain wasn't welcomed by those hard at work. I'd never thought about it like that before.
The other benefit of rain is you can find the leaks.
Poem is looking really good Peter as totally expected. You've done one helluva job on this boat. The brightwork makes her stand out really well as well the dark green on the cabin Top matches the brightwork perfectly.
Hi Peter, great episode, music was full of attitude 🤩. I thought word of the week would have been catalyst but rain is fine. As for the beer of the week. A friend of mine introduced it to me few weeks ago and now it’s a personal favourite 🙌🙌
As you said…”well done”…stay safe…
Looking good!!!
Don't let anyone rain on your parade, Poem is looking finer than a well preserved piece of Chippendale furniture. I'm sure guests will be suitably impressed once she's ready to take cruisers on holiday! They might even have a little Wheaten Terrier you can pet!
Thank you for yet another fun and interesting video.
It rained on Friday (in Portland) and I was soooooooooo happy that it did. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy warm weather, but I more enjoy having green trees and clean air and an abundance of rain. That smell after the first rain is intoxicating.
Poam is really coming along nicely! Glad the rain held off until you were finished :)
Great stuff as always. Right as rain. I suppose Mr. Goggle knows the origin of that expression. I have no idea.
Remarkable 👍🏼
I'm impressed to finally see a real paint brush being employed for this task. As always Peter, the work you're doing looks great. You have really transformed this boat.
Peter The Great, may your reign be long and peaceful!
Hey btw now that you have two boats, have you moved up from Captain Knowles to Fleet Commander Knowles?
:)
Thanks Peter. Another beauty of a video
Love...Reign Over Me!
I was betting on word of the week to be catalyst. Oh well. I enjoy your channel. thks
Awlgrip Awlwood Clear is the best top coat varnish I’ve used. Very hard and awesome UV. Best of all it lasts a very long time
Excellent job, looking very ship shape!
Poem looks so, so good with the new stain and varnish. Another great and entertaining video. Cheers!
Wish we had some rain in Northern Wisconsin!
Inspirational . 🐈
I'm cleaning the bilge at the moment...
Did you find out if the cement softened the planks?
Did that person say an insult at the end?
I get the idiots as well...
They have their own sad lives without sunshine.
Next time you're down to bare wood you might consider a first coat of clear thinned stain as a stain controller. It works great to blend instead of blotch on unfinished or sanded softer wood on the first coat of colored stain. Not that you ever get to unfinished wood much, lol. She looks so nice. Being old and grey I'm not sure I'm all in on the old grey look of your clean wood deck. How does Blue Moon get all that creamy goodness into a Beer? Ive had milk shakes less creamy than Blue Moon Beer, lol.
As an old boat owner (lots o bright work) and a woodworker, I have never understood the appeal of greyed out wood. To my eye, it always looks like someone was too lazy to keep up with the maintenance. That is obviously not the case here, the boat is a shining gem, but I think you may have missed an opportunity to offset the light wood against the dark. That said, great job, Poem is beautiful.
It's just gonna have to rain on your parade to get those fires out... Cheers!
my wife's favorite beer..
Love it! great edition!
Men say, "It is a beautiful rig." Women say, "Oh, she's so cute!"

I am the guy that wanted you to keep the chevy 6 in Poem ....... but now that I realize how much smaller Poem is .... I think it makes great sense to change out the chevy motor for something that is much lighter ......most likely you will opt for some thing that Beta Marine offers ...... could Poem be a speedy craft with a lighter engine ? I am the guy that has an MGB with an alloy rover V8 ..... the aluminum alloy V8 is actually 40 pounds lighter than the original MGB 4 banger ...... so you see where I am now coming from .... but I also have nostalgia for the chevy straight 6 which I have driven in so many pick up trucks ..... please let us know your thoughts on the engine for Poem ....... you did pontificate on electric ..... but you ruled that out ... due to tactical issues

Great work Thank You!
Fantastic work mate.
The aging product could be something like milk powder. On roofing it might just go a bit moldy. Or something that reacts with lignin or sugars in cedar. Might not work on teak
Beautiful!
It’s beginning to rain here in western New York. We’ve been enjoying the smoke from the Canadian fires thIs past week. Peter, you have done such a wonderful job with Poem. I really love how the boat is turning out. Cheers!
Looking great... : )
Wow, love it, love it, love it!! She looks great! Let it rain!
Beautiful🎉
Gear pumps are semi positive displacement so self priming. Ideal for sucking up and forming a vacuum unlike centrifical pumps that nead head pressure to prime.
Pumps don’t suck. They lower the atmospheric pressure in the suction pipe. Gear pumps are PD pumps.
In the words of the Temptations, How I wish it would rain. Am I aging myself?
Dont let it rain on your parade/varnish!
I'm done...😊
The funky blues guitar work, is that you?
Poem is looking Fabulous. ;-)
Oh, I keep forgetting to try (again) to get my shirt.
I'm guessing you get on average a complement every day or more? ;-D
We haven't had rain in any real amount down in western Oregon in over a month. Usually it is on-and-off showers, but I guess we're in for a warm, dry summer.
One thing I noted is that you didn't sand between coats of varnish on the windshield. Is that possible? I thought that you'd always have adhesion problems if you didn't sand between coats of varnish.
epifanes, ay-pee-fah-ness ;) actually drove past it today.
It's raining, so no more varnish for now! But my goodness she's looking nice. I personally couldn't tell the issues with the stain except it was a little uneven looking. What do you think caused it Peter? Thanks again for the great videos I fell I learn something new every time!
Great video!! I love varnishing but i am always afraid that it will end up getting yellowed by the sun. So how many coats do you recommed? I’ve hear 7 or 8, from others but how many you plan to apply to poem? I hope rain wont spoil the job.
Peter..How much is the blue house/shed in the videos that has a for sale on it. And is there a number to call
Is that rain reign rain as in watar rein as in horse or reign as in monarchy either way you will reign at the top of my list
1:00 Audio sounds passable to me.
You’re boat looks great, thanks for sharing
The Lifetime Wood Treatment looks and by description behaves exactly like iron vitrol /iron sulfate (FeSO₄×7H₂O). Its fairly common to use it in Norway to accelerate "weathering" of untreated (fresh) wood or to achieve a uniform "weathering" . Sold here by the kilo for around ($ 12). Works best for timber protected from rain or on naturally rot resistant wood if exposed to rain as the "protection" is mostly cosmetic.
