18:11, that 110 volt charging cable will take 12 hours or so. There is a faster option and that would be a 220 volt charging station which most owners will likely have installed at their house/in their garage. Level 2 takes 4 hours on the lower trim level and 2 hours on the higher trim level.

Did you get a cash back rebate? I was under the impression the credit is based on your personal federal tax bill and only up to the $7500. If you have a $5k tax bill for example I thought you would only get a $5k credit. A flat $7500 cash back rebate would obviously be fantastic.

Excellent review. For the last year I drove a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid. That car was fully equipped and still got 41 mpg. Tragically, the car was hit in a parking lot resulting in a total loss. With this news, I went down to the Toyota dealer and bought a RAV4 PRIME XSE. I took a test drive and just by ear, the gas mode seemed a little louder than the Hybrid. The acceleration was amazing as you say. The XSE model with the premium package, has a 6.6KW charger as opposed to the standard 3.3KW. This will allow a full charge in about 2 hours with a level 2 charger. I am looking forward to driving this vehicle every day.

    Excellent review; thanks!
I think it’s worth pointing out that, if you don’t have routine access to cheap charging at home or at work (or both), then plug-in hybrids are of marginal value. You’re better of with just a plain hybrid. If you do though (I have both, thankfully), they’re really excellent!
13:05 - regarding Charge Mode, at least on our Prius Prime (essentially the same underlying technology), I don’t usually find Charge Mode all that useful. Hybrid Mode generally more efficient than charging from the engine then switching to EV Mode.
I rarely use Charge Mode unless I’m returning from a road trip and see that I’ll have a lot of gas left in the tank: I use very little gas in day-to-day driving, so if I have too much gas left in the after a road trip, it just gets stale over time!

    • @gns942
      @gns942 Před 2 lety

@@stephenfiore9960 Yes, because it will enable either (or both) of the transmission's motor-generators to more efficiently harvest the energy from the vehicle's momentum. They will spin up, generate electricity, and that recharges the battery.
The car will do this all the time when slowing down, whether using the paddles or not, but using the paddles just makes it more aggressive in harvesting the energy.

Forrest - thanks for your realistic review.
Question - this Prime has 19" wheels, does it therefore have a rougher or bumpier ride? Does it feel small rocks and the pits in the road more with these tyres?
With the petrol engine running is it quieter than the standard Hybrid RAV4? If so, much quieter?
    thanks
Also, does the extra weight of the larger battery area make the car drive a bit stiffer on the road? If I am looking for a softer ride, would this RAV Prime suit my needs?

You can charge the vehicle using a bigger charger than what it comes with. The cable that it comes with is good for charging overnight. A bonus is the ability of the OEM evse unit to run on 240v power. No need to buy a separate Level 2 evse.

Great review. I just don't understand why Toyota keeps promoting this since they are only planning to produce/sell 5,000 unit this year.

Great review! I'm stuck on a Rav4 prime vs Niro EV vs EV6. Leaning more toward this cause of the limited availability of others and it's a Toyota.
I like how to don't talk like you just chugged a 4 pack of red bulls like other reviewers.

Good review. Seems like you got somewhat of a dud though. That backup camera isn’t set properly, I own a ‘19 Rav and am upgrading to the Prime soon and the camera is not like that one you have. Also the wireless charging pad on mine always works.

Has toyota integrated a designed heat system to avoid losing battery charge in temperatures below zero?

Good review! A few thoughts/comments/observations for potential buyers:
1.) The paddle "shifters" behind the steering wheel are not for actual gear shifting. If it's like my Outlander PHEV, these will increase/decrease regenerative braking, which is a very powerful tool in maximizing your EV driving range.
2.) I wouldn't recommend using the "charge" mode where the gas engine charges the battery. Outlander PHEV has this same feature, but it seems an inefficient way to energize the battery. Just "hold" the state of charge if you wish to preserve the battery until you can charge it properly again.
3.) Charging using the included Level 1 charger is certainly not going to get you a full charge in 2 hours, nor is it the same or even close to using a Level 2 plug. The included charger will likely take around 12 hours (based off our experience with a 2017 Volt), and a Level 2 charger will probably still take 4 hours or so.
Looks like a great car, and one that we would likely upgrade to from our Outlander PHEV for the increased EV driving range. Someone interested in a plug-in SUV with 4-wheel drive for a lot less money should consider a 2018 or newer Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

The paddles are not equivalent to Outlander. They control engine gearing. The paddles don’t exist on the base model.

If you think the drivers seat was small, sit in the passenger seat. Can’t raise and lower it, your head will hit the roof.

Does this car have an inverter in the rear like the new Highlander does? Also, when in charge mode, does it charge the battery to 100% or do you have to plug it in to get the battery to 100%?

Yes comes with the SXE model. I’ve watched over 30 R4P videos and many show it along side of a 12volt receptacle also. Can power a small refrigerator or microwave. 120volt, 1500watts
