Why didn't you first put the jack into a parts washer and wash away the dirt and loose paint and rust that encrusted it? Wouldn't that have been the logical place to start? I realize that subsequent washings of individual parts would have been necessary, but the application of WD-40 would have been more effective had you not been trying to penetrate all that dirt and detritus before getting to the work piece itself.
