I love this iron - on method and I don't do decoupage any other way now because this method means you get no wrinkles or bubbles, yay 😀 😊 The only thing I do differently is I brush layers of Mod Podge or other decoupage glue/sealer over the substrate that I'm decoupaging, let the glue dry completely, and then I place the decoupage paper or napkin over the dried glue with a sheet of baking parchment over the top and then iron over the the paper until the glue melts again and the decoupage paper sticks down to the surface underneath. I find it easier to use glue instead of plastic wrap when I'm decoupaging something like the inside base of a wooden tray or box, just because I don't have to cut off excess plastic wrap if I've used the glue. But I'm a total convert to the iron on method. Thanks for a great video tutorial 👍.
This technique is wonderful ! Wow, you're video is still helping someone 9 years after you made it!
Amazing! I would never have thought of this! So glad I found you. TY for sharing this technique.
When you realize this was posted 13 years back....2021 anyone?
Michelle, I absolutely L-O-V-E this method - thank you so much for sharing with everyone!!!
I have never seen this technique before. Thank you for sharing your time, talent, skill and inspiration.
I tried this with a Christmas napkin but I used aluminum foil under the plastic wrap and over the napkin. I then glue dotted it to a wooden sign that was the right size and it is now sitting on the ledge at work. It look pretty! TYSM for the idea!
That was really great. I have often had or saw beautiful napkins and said that would make such pretty paper. Thanks for sharing.
This is SO cool, I've long wanted to take beautiful napkins and attach them to paper but the way I was thinking of was strict decoupage. This came out beautifully! Thank you so much! 🙌🙌🙌
That's a very good use of napkins again. I never this existed. I love them. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks! I followed your directions and used this technique several times recently to make invitations, decorate favor boxes, and etc. for the bridal shower I was hosting. They turned out fabulous. HINT: I found that it was crucial to use inexpensive/generic plastic wrap, the name brand stuff I tried at first didn't work.
This is the coolest napkin gluing technique I've ever seen. Thank you sooo much! Subbing!
I was wondering why not use Mod Podge. I'm glad she explains that. These are great ideas. I would never have thought of this at all. I love the eyeballing & guessing- I am not much of a measurer! Thanks!
Your finished cards are very high quality work and so beautiful! Thanks for sharing your technique!
the plastic covering you get from dry cleaners works too☺fun crafts!
Thank you for demoing this technique - I've read about it but have not yet done it.
I've just recently bought some suitable paper napkins & wondered why this technique would be better than glueing them to cardstock. You answered that nicely in the last part of the video, plus showing some lovely examples of how to use the finished pieces.
That is amazing! I've never thought of doing this. Your cards came out beautifully!
Thank you SO much for sharing this technique! It's simple yet effective & your cards are lovely! I too had a nightmare of a time using Mod Podge. TY again!
Oh I love this! It opens up more possibilities for beautiful backgrounds! TY so much.
Thank you. I've heard of this but no one would show me how to do it. Thank you so much for taking time to do this.
These are beautiful! And there's thousand's of pretty napkins! Thanks for sharing 💜😄
What a clever way to do decorative paper using napkins. Love this technique, very clever. TFS
Oh my gosh! I just found this post when I was searching how to decoupage napkins to my journal. Now decoupage will have to wait (admittedly, I wasn't keen on the idea of decoupage, so this work out great!!) Thanks so much for sharing! I can't wait to try it!! Easier, faster, far less messy! What's not to love?!
I found you totally by accident (looking up decorative ideas for the bathroom!), but boy, I'm glad! This was awesome! Thank you for sharing.
OMG!!! this technique is the best! I could have never imagine something like this could be done...
Thank YOU sooo much for the awesome tip... (subscribing right now!)
WOW, love it!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this. So much easier to do than with all the other methods!!!!
I watched your video and attempted it. It WORKED BEAUTIFULLY!!!
I LOVE the texture of it.
Thank you SO MUCH for your video!
The only negative is that my iron quit working within 1.5 hours(tbh, it was from the thrift store, lol. $5 down the drain, lol)
Interrupted my happy time!
But MAJOR thanks to you!!!
As soon as you pulled out the iron, it clicked. I knew that you were using the cling wrap as a "glue". Wow, so simple and so creative! I love this and will be using it!
So the cling wrap is like hot glue for this project. Cool!
If you watch closely at grocery stores, holiday napkins are ALWAYS on sale the day after the holiday; like Christmas, Hanukkah, St. Patty's Day etc... So, you can stock up dirt cheap. Great video and thnx for the post.
I tried it. I did have to do it longer, like a minute, but it was really cool. My mother thought I bought the card.
This is beautiful. I've decided to make my gifts and cards as much as possible so this would be great. Thank you for sharing.
I have never worked with any paper projects, scrap booking etc...I am a seamstress. I love working with fabric. I must say that your cards are absolutely gorgeous. And you can tell you have a passion for it, and are very good at it. I will keep this project in mind if ever I find myself wanting to dabble in something other than sewing. Best Regards
Excellence! I loved the easy way you teach. The cards are lovely too! Thank you.
Great idea & technique. Love your video as it was clear & easy to understand. I've seen lots of incredible napkins at my local Dollar Tree stores on the wall with the party goods. Would be great for kid's party invitations, showers, baby announcements, etc. The ideas are limitless & only bound by your imagination.
I always save napkins form special events, (for some reason) well hoping I'll scap with them. SO I used your technic with my 8yr old grandsons Spiderman B-Day napkin fussy cutting it then put that special glow in the dark paint in places and put it on foam pop-up squares. mounted it on a cardbard building I cut out and painted with glow in the dark paint too. He thought that was the coolest B-day present of all... Thanks!!
To separate such layered papers: apply small piece of sticky tape to one side of design paper. On the opposite side (back side/other layer) place another small piece of sticky tape Without lotting the 2 pieces of tape stick to one another. Carefully grasp one tape strip in each hand and gently pull tape and its attached paper layer apart. This should get the paper layers separated enough so you can complete process by hand. I think this was on back side of Contact Paper a while back. Works like a charm.
Hi Michelle,
Thanks for showing us that technique. Looks fairly simple which I like. You explained it well.
Some of your cards looked great! Such a nice personal touch.
so basically, the plastic wrap acts as the glue, interesting! can't wait to try this :)
MAY GOD BLESS YOU FOR SHARING THIS TUTORIAL..........................
Thanks for showing the napkin transfer technique. Awesome and pretty!
Wowwww! Looks great! Can’t wait to try it. I love your laid back style
this would be a great way to match table setting name cards to the napkins for a dinner event :-)
Thank you.
I would never EVER have thought to use cling-wrap! :-)
This is wonderful. Great idea for covering the front and then cutting the drawers free!
I was going to try napkin transferring before, but that one was a ot different. I love this idea, t looks so easy! ?|Thank you for sharing! I love any projects that show new techniques, and aso love to learn new ways to make your own papers! This is so pretty!
From one Michele to another with two LLs ... fantastic!!! I cannot wait to try this. It was shared with me at The Muse challenge #133 this week, by a fabulous card maker, Maria Rodriguez!=] Michele
Thanks for making this video! I had seen this technique either in a book or on TV at one point, but had forgotten the how-to. I have a whole bunch of beautiful Punch Studio napkins that I would love to use this technique on for my cardmaking.
Is she still around this was posted in 2008... hopefully you're still getting messages thank you so much for this technique.
I'm so glad your video popped up! This is such a fun idea, thanks!!
Awesome. I love ideas that I can actually afford or justify spending the money on. I will definitely be doing this a lot! Thank you so much.
WOW ! That was amazing and a great idea. I often see beautiful napkins and wished there were paper like that. Thank you again for sharing. I can't wait to try it.
great tip thank you. my tip for separating paper napkins is to have 2x pieces of blue tackle....push together with the corners of napkin in between and pull apart ...separates perfectly. Cheers Sharon
I just across your video and this is an awesome technique, thank you for sharing!
OMGGGGG!!!! I have worked with napkins in my art, like forEVER - - and I never knew they sometimes had THREE layers of white paper on them. Thanks!
Wow! Gread idea! Thanks for sharing with us!🌷 Greetings from Grece 😃
wow! thanks! great idea! I will try some out for my jewelry making!
This is absolutely the greatest!! Will give it try for sure!! Thanks for sharing!!!
I sure wish that you would come back, love your videos!
Thanks, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this done. Thank you for a lovey DIY. Janice
This was very helpful! I was just trying to find a video to see if and/or how to decoupage over velvet (still cant find anything) but stumbled across this brilliangt idea. Im a late bloomer with all of the arts and crafts but always been resourseful and had an eye for art and design.. but never nurtured the passion. But now I've just dove into beading/ jewelry making, friendship bracelet making, as well as taking a stab at decoupage. This technique will be usful for several different projects!
I Love This!!! I have wanted to do things with napkins for sometime, but have never done it, because I dreaded the thought of having to mod podge a napkin. Thank You for sharing Your Time, and Talent
Excellent! I just purchased some napkins and was going to use the mod Podge method. This looks much faster and the results look perfect. Thanks so much!
Wow I never knew this before your video...thank you for opening me to this. It's really pretty (and neat!)
Wow! Endless possibilities for decorated papers!
Use a tiny piece of masking tape on the white part of the napkin and the layer will peel right off.
That’s nice because the end result is like custom cardstock... and on top of that it’d make it easier to cut with the Cricut because the napkin is sturdy now! Thank you!
Now I know what to do with my pretty napkins. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this technique. A friend in the UK had shown me using glue But it is messy and the napkin can tear. I was thrilled to see your technique which is so easy and clean.
you can use two pieces of tape to pull apart the napkin layers.
Such a beautiful technique I would have never thought that someone could do something so beautiful very nice so thoughtful your vision is lovely well done
that is great! I can't wait to see what else I can use besides Napkins with this technique. I am amazed!. Great work.
I had never heard of this before, but it intrigues me enough to want to try. Thank you.
How about using freezer wrapping paper. I've used it before to make iron on stencils because it has a coating on one side. The paper is fairly sturdy also.
TFS! Great idea I'm definitely going to try this! 👍🏻💜🤗
Thank you for doing this tutorial. I never could master the art of modepodge.
This is a great idea, and your cards are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing! I'll certainly will try it!
Thanks!! I have saved some napkins I liked but have not tried this technique yet. Looks good.
Beautiful cards also 👍🏼❤️
Thank you for the napkins transfer tutorial. Happiness, Teresa
Beautiful and awesome idea of using napkins. Thanks for sharing this one. =)
I used to dye tissue paper, folded up and dipped in different colors of food Coloring! When dry, I ironed the tissue paper, I just ironed it to freezer paper, shiny Side! Stays beautifully! I'm thinking this will cut many steps to two. You will love It! then I made cards with matching envelopes! Try it!
it always seemed to me that the napkin technique (the classical one, with adhesive and a lot of time working on it) seemed very complicated and hard to achieve. but wow, what you did here is so so incredibly easy! is like...cheating legally at an exam! :) I always loved the patterned papers and tried to achieved them every possible way, the cheapest being the digital papers. but what it lacked was the texture. with your technique you got them both! it cheap AND textured! thanks so very much!
I have been recycling plastic grocery bags to do this with regular typewriter and notebook paper and scrapbook paper to make tags. Free adhesive! The plastic wrap can be better if the grocery bag color or markings might show through, though. Also,I learned the hard way that it's important to get the plastic hot enough to stick, but not so hot it starts to make holes, for along with the holes comes shrinkage, too, which will bend the substrate or pull the napkin loose (or wrinkle it). Don't use a super-hot iron or hold it down for too long!
A good way to separate the napkin layers is with a "kiss". Gently "kiss" one of the corners of a napkin and... voilà! :-)
This method I have never seen - I have lots of
napkins, so I shall certainly try this. Thanks
for sharing.
Wow, that is very cool!!!! I will definitely use this idea in the future!!! Thank u for sharing, very clever!!
Hi, This is COOL. I am so going to try this. Thank you, Stay happy, safe and well.
wow, I am going to try this. I tried glue, gel med and modge podge but didn't like results so going to give a go. been collecting decorated napkins for years and have a big stash of them. thanks for posting this
It works well also with two sided tape, you put it on napkin, than expose sticky on other side and qlue it on any paper you like...
Iznanaduvacko, ednostavno, brza i efekasna izrabotka!
What a great idea, now i have a reason to use my iron LOL. I will being trying this one out right away, thank you.
beautiful results, love the cards and Thanks for the lesson
Very nice.. :) Easy to understand..
How incredibly nice made. Thank you.
A huge Thankyou 💜💚💛 I would never have guessed it was so easy to do this 😍🐝🐞🌼 Great tutorial...
I'm reminded of a 'dry mounting technique' I was taught for use with photo prints back in the day - you would place a photo over a sheet of wax paper, with both centered on the cardstock you wanted to attache the photo to, cover, and then iron. The wax paper would melt and act as an adhesive for the photo, with relatively little mess or fuss.
You could use spray adhesive to glue the napkin to the card stock to avoid using the iron. Still, the texture sounds interesting.
REALLY NEAT!!!! You have given me ideas for new ways to do my personalized greeting cards. GREAT - THANKS
VERY clever craft idea, Im gonna do this this weekend. Thank You for sharing!!
Nine years later this shows up in my feed and it is brilliant! I've adhered napkins successfully using adhesives but this seems so much simpler and no waiting for it to dry. Cannot wait to give it a go. Thanks for sharing!
