The Bruges Markt (Dutch for “market”) is located in the Belgian city of Bruges, West Flanders, Belgium. It is the central square of the city, occupying an area of approximately 2.5 acres / 1 ha. It is also known as the “Grote Markt”.
The history of the square goes back to the 10th century. In addition to the busy market events, the square was also the site of all kinds of events, including public executions.
The last major renovation of the square took place in the 1990s, when most road traffic was banned from it. Numerous restaurants and bars line the square today, making it a popular strolling area.
