    1. Would have been better if you had included the weaknesses. You spoke at length about Ursula's weakness and how it was workable without ever showing it on screen.
    2. I think more new player-based videos like worst 5 investigators for new players would be great. I'd love to see a "top 5 deckbuilding mistakes for new players" similar to your "top 5 trap cards" video.

      1.) Exactly! They talked at length about Ursula's weakness and all this time i was like... well WTF IS her weakness? I don't have her in my collection yet, but i still wanna know what they are talking about...
      2.) "Top 5 worst deckbuilding mistakes" would be a great video!

    I think Cho is fantastic for new players, it's easy to see what he does well and how to do it

  • @Huettnera
    @Huettnera Před 2 lety +4

    Whenever i play the game with new players i give them either the Stella Clark or the Nathaniel Cho deck because both of them are very easy to understand and a lot of fun to play!
    Stella is a "coming-back-again" that is almost unkillable on normal difficulty and teaches new players that they can take advantages out of failing and Nathan is a brute that kills things and allows new players to play a lot of their cards.

  • @Iamdroopy
    @Iamdroopy Před 3 lety +5

    Zoey, Daisy, I never give a new player a Mystic, Trish and Silas are my new player go to's at the moment. The reason I don't teach players how to play with a Mystic is that you need to teach people how to play before you then tell them that Mystics break all the rules. If a new player likes the theme of a character I'd work with them on how to play no matter what class it is. But walking into a game like AHLCG and starting out breaking the rules makes it harder to teach it.

    • @markusschmidt9260
      @markusschmidt9260 Před 3 lety +2

      It's true, that Mystics break the rules, but that's what makes them rather straight forward and perfect for new players.
      Rules: You need fist buffs to fight or book buffs to investigate. Will is just a defensive stat you need to not die, but won't win you the game.
      Mystics: You pump up your deck with brain buffs like Rosary and Guts and show every "specialist" how to win the game.

    Nice video.. I play AH with my girlfriend and did struggle to recommend her an easy investigator.
    Small improvement.. include the investigator specific card and weakness to. Imo they further define the investigator and help build the fantasy.

    This video is just Chef's Kiss of inro. Jaqueline and Stella can be from the player packs already built as well. My first go around with my friend was Jaqueline, Wendy, and Caroline. Caroline is NOT beginner friendly but really strong once you know what you are doing. Wendy and Jaqueline are just amazing.

    Haha, I just recently taught a new player to play using a Luke deck :P (They loved Luke's flavor and I didn't want to deny them that, even though he was on my internal shortlist of "terrible investigators for new players.) As it turned out, they had a blast with him! Honestly, a big thing about Luke is that they felt very safe, due to his Happy Place. His movement options and event-focused options can be pretty much ignored (or slowly figured out by the player as the games go on) and Luke will still be enjoyable. Especially in The Gathering, where movement is mostly useless, merely hopping to the Happy Place is a fun effect. (Although the Attic/Cellar do also provide an obvious place where a new player can enjoy Luke's event ability, especially since new players generally hate taking horror/damage.)

    • @Iamdroopy
      @Iamdroopy Před 3 lety

      Calvin, Preston, Marie, Amanda and Sister Mary would be my choices for that. Mostly because they aren't focused enough. Well and Marie manipulates Doom and that's a skill most long time players aren't comfortable with. With honorable mention to Lola for being the both Best and Worst neutral investigator.

    • @markusschmidt9260
      @markusschmidt9260 Před 3 lety

      @@Iamdroopy Agree on most of your picks, but I think, Amanda is pretty straight forward. She is flex for sure, loves Vicious Blow and Overpower just like Deduction and Perception. (She is therefore also the best investigator for Acidic Ichor.) But her hand every turn will tell her, what she can do at the moment. So she is not unfocused, just not a typical clue specialist like most seekers.

    Thank you for this list. Some characters are way harder than others. For example, Carolyn Fern is ridiculously challenging to build properly... while someone like Zoey is clear and straightforward to build: just help her engage monsters and kill monsters. Maybe she can find some clues by killing. Nice & easy. I do disagree with your Jenny choice - Jenny is pretty challenging. She doesn't really give a new player much direction. She was the 2nd investigator I ever played and my first build of her was truly awful. Later, I rebuilt her with some heavy guidance from arkhamdb into big-money Jenny and she became much better... but not sure I'd ever recommend her for someone new. I'd be more inclined to choose Tony Morgan or Winifred for a new player. Also - yes to the five worst - but I recommend you focus on 'worst for new' rather than just naming a character that's bad in general. Lola for example is bad for everyone, but Preston is more 'bad for a new player'.

    Hi Arkham Horror PBG team, love your videos. If you're still looking for suggestions for new videos / series, what about something like a "shooting fish in a barrel" series - i.e. if you want to crush a particular campaign with 1, 2, 3 or 4 players, and assume you aren't using the taboo list, which investigator(s) would you use, and which decks? Probably plenty of variants of this theme you could make too.

    One thing to note about Ursula Downs to a new player that is rarely obvious is that her passive allows you to play investigate cards for your hand like Unearth the Ancients or activate investigate assets like Fingerprint Kit. Even keen-eyed new players (and plenty of seasoned players due to the unusual wording of her passive) will probably miss this line unless it’s shown to them a couple times.

    • @PlayingBoardGames
      @PlayingBoardGames  Před 2 lety +1

      They are two very strong investigators, so I think they will work. The only thing to be aware of is that they are both a bit more unconventional in how they get clues/fight monsters than a Guardian and Seeker would be.
      I think they'll still do great as a choice, but they may require a bit more setup to get going.

    • @PlayingBoardGames
      @PlayingBoardGames  Před 2 lety +1

      I think that even though the old box may be cheaper, you get a lot better of a game experience out of the new revised core. In addition, if you do like it and want more, the revised core is a better place to start with.
      In the end, if you don't like it, you'd have an easier time selling the revised core over the old core set.

    • @Bisclas
      @Bisclas Před 2 lety

      @@PlayingBoardGames Yeah I think that makes sense, I was not sure about buying the old core plus the Dunwich expansion, or the revised core set.
      I'm afraid the 3 scenarios in the core set would be over too quickly, but I can always play them on normal or hard to keep failing and having to replay them xD

  • @chimpflipperjr742
    @chimpflipperjr742 Před rokem

    Watching this video again just to remember the thoughts put forth about Stella and I think she is the PERFECT on ramp for players.
    My GF(who doesn't have much game experience in general) and I started when Dunwich revamp came out, she played Daisy(as a Nancy Drew fan, the magnifying glass and books were a huge draw) and I started as Zoey.
    Needless to say, we got our teeth kicked in haha. Most of it was just poor deck building, but for her it was just not being familiar with how these types of games work and the strategy involved.
    We just finished our Carcosa run with her playing as Stella and she had a MUCH better time. She's still grasping some of the rules, as we don't get to play as regularly as we'd like, but Stella lets her focus on learning the game and strategy instead of worrying about bad things happening to her.
    Stella is a great investigator to get a new player excited about the game, giving them a positive experience out of the gate and over time expose them to more and more challenges. Even myself who has played a lot of tabletop/card games got kicked in just because I didn't fully grasp HOW cards interacted with the game and how to mitigate risks. So that, combined with the game just being punishing in general, can really turn a new player off.
