  • Speaker: Professor Martti Koskenniemi, Centennial Professor at LSE; Academy Professor, University of Helsinki; and Director, Erik Castrén Institute of International Law and Human Rights
Summary: The presentation will examine the raise and fall of human rights as a legal-political idiom. From a powerful claim to to protection, resources and participation, they seem to have turned into a bureaucratic vocabulary available for defending whatever interests or preferences a speaker wants to defend. But they may still have strategic uses in some institutional contexts.

Many thanks for sharing this! Can anyone please clarify on the point of the difference between the domestic and international contexts, in particular, the red traffic light example he gave? 48:00-50:00 I didn't get the comparison of the benefits of obeying the red lights rule vis-a-vis the significance of not intervene/intervene when it is needed/not needed.
