    • Dream Theater - Six De...
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is the sixth song and title track on the album of the same name, written and performed by progressive metal band Dream Theater. Though the song is essentially broken up into eight movements on separate tracks, the song itself is 42 minutes long and takes up the entire second CD of the album
    I. Overture
    II. About To Crash
    III. War Inside My Head
IV. The Test That Stumped Them All
    V. Goodnight Kiss
    VI. Solitary Shell
    VII. About To Crash (Reprise)
    VIII. Losing Time (Grand Finale)
The first movement, Overture, is an instrumental, which means it doesn't describe any of these disabilities, and the lyrics for the seventh movement. About To Crash tells of a girl (Degree 1) who has one of the most well-known of all mental illnesses: Bipolar Disorder. War Inside My Head tells the story of someone (Degree 2) who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, as some soldiers do after war. The Test That Stumped Them All tells about a patient (Degree 3) that is suffering from schizophrenia. Goodnight Kiss is about a mother (Degree 4) who has lost her child, in one form or another, and is suffering from post-partum depression. Solitary Shell tells about a person (Degree 5) that most likely has Asperger syndrome. About to Crash (Reprise) carries on from where About to Crash left off. This time the song is sung from the sufferer's point of view and describes her going through another manic episode and Losing Time is about a girl (Degree 6) suffering from dissociative identity disorder, previously called Multiple Personality Disorder.
In Grand Finale, the lyrics advise the listener to be more understanding of the people who carry these and similar afflictions, and to accept them as they should be. This section, in which the degrees described by the song are summed up in six lines: Deception of fame (Degree 3: The Test That Stumped Them All), Vengeance of war (Degree 2: War Inside My Head), Lives torn apart (Degree 4: Goodnight Kiss), Losing oneself (Degree 6: Losing Time), Spiraling down (Degree 1: About To Crash (and Reprise)) and Feeling the walls closing in (Degree 5: Solitary Shell).

Great work and nice to put in some pictures of a band in different eras in the instrumental parts. Young and new John Petrucci looks pretty different and John Myung doesn't age which is common fact that we know. :)

Fun fact. Dream Theater always starts their albums with the last note of the last song from their previous album. Listen to that final stretched note on this and it connects perfectly with the song As I Am from their next album, Train of Thought. P.s. As I Am ROCKS!
CORRECTION: not always. Only for 4 albums and this and the next are a part of that.

Amazing, thoughtful and emotional reaction from the both of you. This is probably one of DT's most emotional songs covering mental health in a most independent manner. From James's emotional vocals to the complete musical masterclass driving the emotions through every note. I know this rather well and I still get chills and goose bumps everything I hear it. Fun fact: this songs ends by the same long chord with which the first song in their next album begins, so they like blend together in such way. And the same goes with the previous album, which ends in static, which is the beginning of this album - you get the picture) And the next album, Octavarium, begins and ends with the same piece, completely looping in on itself. Yeah, DT know how to do such stuff, making their works even more amazing! Always some conceptual things not only in lyrics, but in instrumental parts as well!
And Mike Portnoy's 12 step suite! Goingthrough 5 albums in a row! I think 2000 - 2010 was indeed the golden age of DT!
And this pacticular song, Six Degrees, IMHO, is the absolute best not only by DT, but in all prog rick and metal history at least, that was ever composed!

This entire album is based upon a mystery story that the band wrote. Y'all have actually listened to one of the songs live called Beyond This Life (the one with the improvised section.) They managed to make each individual section feel so “schizophrenic” compared to what came before and after it.
It’s such a beautiful example of conveying disjointed, overwhelming tension through song.
