'IIT students going for civil services is a positive trend', says IIT-Madras Director V Kamakoti

  • IT Madras Director V Kamakoti talks about the performance of the premier engineering institute in NIRF rankings, and how it is still a challenge for Indian institutions to compete in global rankings. He highlights the importance of entrance examinations in a country like India. The director said that while he prefers pen and paper mode for entrance exams, but also cautioned that they are not scalable for a country like India where millions take such exams every year. He also talks about the abiotic and upward trend in students opting for core engineering courses, and speaks about the process made at its first offshore campus in Zanzibar. Kamakoti said that the institute has put in a lot of effort to ensure mental well being of the students at the campus and prevent suicide cases among them. He also talked about the emerging trend among IIT students to join civil services, and termed it encouraging. He talked about the importance of sustainability.
