    The block in my Malibu is a Speedmaster Cast Iron severe duty block with billet main caps. We’ve built 2 engines out of them and they held up very good.

    • @theoldmansgarage
      @theoldmansgarage Pƙed rokem +27

      Also, the Speedmaster block doesn’t require taller lifters. They use standard lifters. Easier to get when you need them, and they can come in and out without pulling the heads

  • @Jeffsa12
    @Jeffsa12 Pƙed rokem +29

    Man I'm really digging these engine related episodes Chief and Jackie! Brings back some good old memories.
    If two bores side by side are both 4.185 on a std 4.400 bore CL sbc, that leaves .215 between the cyl to seal the head gasket, which is plenty AFAIK. Now bore one of the holes another .020 @ 4.205, you'd only have .010 less @ ~.205 between the cyl's.
    Bore stability becomes a real concern though and more so on nitrous. It would likely have pretty crappy ring seal under full power with the bores moving around. In my mind, a 4.185, 4.4 bore CL sbc would be questionable for a high power nitrous deal.
    If that block proves savable on the main line, I'd sleeve the 4.205 hole and fill the block up to the water pump holes min, as a band aid before it's honed. Better yet consider switching it to methanol and fill the block all the way up to the deck.

    • @jmr1970
      @jmr1970 Pƙed rokem +2

      Chief, this guy is on the right track to sleeve over size cylinders. If your patching for now to put the money towards the rotating assy. Would be money well spent based on a Chinese block or any newer blocks. Love you and Jackie videos

    • @supertunesupertune
      @supertunesupertune Pƙed rokem +1

      I would not re-sleeve the 4.205 cylinder unless it's broken... this will disturb the cylinders on each side too much and make them worse.
      Filling is a good idea either water pump hole on gas or full deck on methanol. Use a diamond plateau hone finish if possible. Set 2nd ring +.005 over the top ring and just reuse old rings so you don't have to buy multiple sets. Don't be too worried if the rings end up on the big side with Nitrous . .035 top and .040 2nd still will be ok with good breather system. Try and get .0028 on main clearance and .0025 on the rods as close as you can. I'm still building race engines at 63 (40 years +)

    • @Jeffsa12
      @Jeffsa12 Pƙed rokem

      @@supertunesupertune I'm sure his machinist would know how to finish the cylinders for whatever rings he decides to go with.
      Good point on the sleeves with siamese bores though. Sleeving could lead to disruption/distortion and weakening the interface/structural integrity of the adjacent bores.
      Seems we agree on filling the block though.
      Old retired guy here. Worked as a machinist in aerospace and ran an automotive machine shop. Built and dynoed my fair share of race engines over the years as well.

    Thanks for telling the rest of the story...once those bearings straitened out the tangs and start to spin (who knows, bad line bore, too quick a rebuild job, clearances too tight or flat out not checked, rods not checked and resized after replacing rod bolts on the big end, or an unprimed startup in too cold weather when all the parts are shrunken to closest tolerances), the welding job began and extreme heat began radiating outward from 7 to 8, to Main 4 in a cascade eventually leading to the bent crank (no telling if it was bent slightly in a prior repair, not checked and just reused either), and each bore being differently fixed at different times (shown by the different bore sizes according to your detailed measuring), that block has been through hell and back a few times.
    Once he line bores it properly and balances the internals to match, new crank and hones the cylinders to custom match each piston overbore (since it appears you have the necessary pistons to correctly fill each hole, new rods and crank going in, and he only needs to match up 1 piston to bore as the other 7 are still appear useable from your inventory, and 1 main cap to repair, bearings and seals and reassembly and mild machining otherwise), it is a budget rebuild vs a new block and all new internals.
    It will be a fine spare in emergency use backup, you can quickly use for content while her other bullet waits for parts and to be completed, and get it again lined out, and know what it would do when and if you need to use it later.
    Hopefully the timing works perfectly for both of you this time, and it stays together, you get all motor pulls, a few spray pulls, a decent working tune that you can depend on and lots of data with no oiling issues. And that her parts come in and the other engine is completed in the meantime, so you can pull that 1 out whole and working, as I agree it may do even better than what it did since you already have a good data head start on the tune (as long as you pay strict attention to where that cam was installed last time...am sure you did keep great notes since you even re-checked rod clearances on the disassembly).
    Degreeing that cam to get close to the prior install will be key to using that prior data correctly as you know. He is right, proper balance of the reciprocating mass internally and proper clearances (main and rod bearings, piston to bore, ring gaps, etc), and that block will not even know the bores/pistons are all different sizes, though you will know if you do a compression check of each hole as combustion chambers at installed height heads on and torqued will vary slightly, though no more than a factory small block that has never been machined.
    Head combustion chambers that have received no work especially cast alum heads upon proper ccing will often show as much as a 2-3 cc difference between chambers, so there is that, and (I run a Stocker and we cannot touch the combustion head chamber at all, so no changing that mfg issue)...I have not done so on mine, but am sure since we can bore cylinder over to 80 thou over and still be within our ruleset before a block is out of compliance and unusable, but rest assured I am sure someone in the past has figured out the way to balance out the smaller head chamber cc issue to larger is to overbore only specific cylinders to even out and match cylinder to head volumes exactly on purpose and still stay within the very specific extreme ruleset we bought into and still take full advantage, where yours is just by former/current breakage and repair.
    Here is wishing your path on that repair is smooth for you both, and think you will already be getting showered with valves, call Billy and see what uncle Bob has on his shelves, as I am sure he has a bunch and may have just what you need.

    Thanks for the mention justin. I do know an engine. Being an award winning machinist and my first car was a 1972 gran torino sport. They made 888 of them.at 14 years old Mine wasnt the cobra jet 429. I had the c4 transmission and a high output 302 with a 4 barrel. It had 57000 original miles was pearl white. Needed new valve seats. It smoked like a banshee. My first truck was a 1983 chevy Silverado short wheel base 2wheel drive. Black all original it had the beauty rails amd beauty rings and got about 10 mpg with a 305. I've always worked on engines small and large from tearing my fathers 25 horse Johnson tiller handle boat motor apart one day when he was st work at the age of 4 or 5. You could say I've always been intrested in analyzing the internals and how they work in an engine. I work on all types. Most people dont know the difference in a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke. They think one you just add oil to the fuel or that they got powerbands in them actually a band lol or they dont have valves only ports. Well that's not always the case. My 353 Detroit 3 cylinder diesel engine in my skidder. Is actually a 2 stroke diesel with a blower and it has valves and camshaft all the other parts a 4 stroke diesel say a Cummins 6bt would have. Only engines I'm not hands on familiar with is the rotary engine or the turbine engine and some other exotic engines that are out there. If you can envision it you can make it our very creative creations all spring from imagination. I love the in depth video's talking about tolerance and clearance I nerd out on that shit. What I really need is an invitation from yall to come and help and be apart of the building and the work to wear my talents and skills can be of value and of use in something that matter's instead of a small logging operation that is one day going to get me killed. Cant wait for another video godbless

    ust a note. We have built many Chevy engines for circle track. That oiling problem you had is one that we fixed by drilling a hole with a #10 or #12 fitting in the front where an original small blocked off or possibly just a flat spot is there. This feeds the main oil gallery for the mains FROM THE FRONT (aka front oiling). We blocked off the passage from the filter housing area that feeds the rear of the motor first. Then put a filter adapter plate with a#10 or #12 fitting out to a remote filter with an in/out to the new fitting in the front of the motor. This feeds all the mains evenly. We also put in .060 restrictors from the mains feeding the cam bearings. This keeps more oil to the mains feeding the rods because the cam bearings don't need that much oil. Hope this helps you out....

    Love watching your videos , IMO I think the problem is coming from the screen door cylinder , it obviously was blowing the oil back in the oil gally causing loss of oil on the bearing and burning up , the other bearings were unaffected because of the extra pressure . Let that soak in , or not

  • @stephenmitchell3569
    @stephenmitchell3569 Pƙed rokem

    I run Canton cylinder that hold 2 quarts of oil under pressure for cold start and for when parachute used to cover oil starvation from oil thrown away from oil pickup. Simply and works for saving bearings giving twice bearings life for me.

    I had almost the exact same thing happen. I hung a rod thru the oil pan and drive the car on the trailer. Obviously a spun bearing similar to what you found. I started measuring the bearings. The thickness of the bearings where slightly off. Now the one that failed was toast and I couldn’t check it. My theory is some of the bearings didn’t have the clearance they should have. ( It was a bought short block that I didn’t build ).

    Only sure way to prevent it from happening, is sell it or leave it in the garage, but what fun would that be. You roll the dice every time you fire one up, pull to the burnout box, and do what you do. Keep the videos coming, keep your chin up, and let's et eat.

    This video is why I watch this channel and mainly only this channel outside of my fishing channels.. Jackie and Chief are the most down to earth people on the interwebs and Chief, if I had valves that you needed I would send them to you without a thought. Unfortunately I am not into racing and i have none. But, I would if I had them. I truly hope that someone can come through for you on this. Content was great as always. I hope ya'll get this thing fixed soon because I miss watching Jackie smoke dem Hoosiers.....

    I'm pretty sure that small block will perform well once she's rebuilt. It doesn't sound all that bad. I was expecting worse initially tbh. I hope you get the parts you need soon because I really want to see how she's going to run this time around. I think it will surprise some folks!
    I can't wait until you've got Caddy Jack where you want it to be. I'm really looking forward to the street action! Loving the content guys, keep it coming!

    WOW where did you find a Heinz 57 engine at I haven't seen one in years. That's a sure sign of two things 1 short on money and can't do things right because of it. 2 Joe blow engine rebuild from under the shade tree built the engine and said on it's like new and will work I am only selling it because I got a new motor because I screwed this one up. . I have done the same thing back in the day and a win even 25 runs was good but as I got older and smarter all that changed and my car would sit for I hate to say it but some times 15 weeks waiting on me to get the money gathered up to fix it the right way. Then I found out how it felt to win more passes the lose. It's better to fix it right than to patch things up I know money is tight but if it breaks it cost more. Good luck hope it works out for you. Take care stay safe.

    Cheif wanted to pass some info on the SBC stuff, I am building a Pro charged SBC and was gonna wait 8-10 months for a Dart Lil M, but after doing some research and talking to a few builders, they all said World products Motown 2 Billet cap block/ BBC cam tunnel, also raised.134, with bushed .904 lifter bore, and so on.. is a way better platform.. I’ve always heard bad things with World stuff, but I guess they revamped in 2015 and have killer stuff now,, I’m in the process on my build, not sure if you guys are gonna keep building on a SBC platform, but if so..I’m super happy so far..â€™đŸ€˜đŸ»âœŒđŸ»
