Agreed, Calabash. Many of us had hope for a new tech top end detector to put Garrett back at the top. I also am truly let down.

    • @RobNC-OG
      @RobNC-OG Před 12 dny

The real test is how much more are people willing to pay for software. Garrett is testing the waters and opening a proverbial flood gate on ways to keep charging the buyer past purchase.
People keep saying "no that is for an upgrade to the next machine", only time you pay. AT FIRST. But think update/bug fix subscriptions and not even a damn manual without paying for it first. That's how bad it could get if the greed mongering companies see people are willing to do it. If you start working on bigger things first (upgrade features), people are slowly conditioned into paying for "updates" to the software which then leads to paying for "bug fixes" because only the new "update" will have the fix. The next thing you know you're paying for anything and everything they can come up with. It's not paranoid thinking if you look at how the tech industry already does this crap. And all thanks to Garrett for trying to be a trend-setter here and emphasize how software is where it's really at, that the hardware is a mere thing that only adds a physical element to your hands and eyes.

  • @lancemcilwainoutcastmetald5398

Now this is the calabash we all need. The city bird watching calabash is ok but the metal detector calabash is the real calabash. So glad you are back with the same passion that you had before. 10 years ago I first watched one of your videos and you lit a fire under me to get back into detecting after I had been out of the hobby for a few years. However, you have cost me a fortune in detectors. I had 14 machines at one time because i was testing them like you did. I find more joy in testing machines than I do actually hunting at times

Why did Garrett aquire Whites Patents if they are not going to use them? The MX Sport/MXT has multi tones, Auto ground tracking. I will give credit though for recreating the spectragraph "bars" tech although the really cool feature with that the V3i spectragraph had was you could see what freq was hitting hardest on a target. I can almost look past the lack of tones but only 3 recovery speeds is concerning. I've been saying for 10years if someone just took the V3i and gave it a carbon shaft and lighter waterproof control box with modern processing speed they would sell like hotcakes.

@@calabashphotography1234 does anyone think this is gonna be on par or outperform it rivals ? I doubt even the most loyal Garrett user have any faith in that i think they mainly want to support an american company but it just seems like its the apex 2.0 where you have a small group of extremely dedicated individuals that want to base a machines final bad judgment based loosely on test garden and nail test results and yes absolutely this is great way to get a handle and an understanding of how the machine works but i think the majority of us are looking for objects that are naturally lost and buried not things intentionally buried and some very experienced detectorists Like paystreak for instance have stated this several times that the real proof should be in feild testing and if you look at the success stories with Garrett machines it seems like they have no problems finding some really great stuff but i guess a broken clock is right at least twice a day and i think most would agree there build quality and warranty and customer service is really good also things to consider when making an investment into any sport/hobby

I realize that we have yet to see real testing comparisons of the new VX9, but the more this new Garrett Vortex gets digested, the more of a disappointment it is turning out to be. Garrett clearly fell short of leapfrogging Nokta's and Minelab’s latest onslaught of new performance and value detectors like the Xtrerra Elite and Nokta’s Triple Score, let alone conquering models like the Nox 900, Legend, Manticore and DEUS II.
I can only imagine how much Garrett spent on that Storm media where they could have just spent that $$ on creating a real ground breaking effort, not a hybrid of old and new that appears to fall short.

I think it is quite telling that Garrett never seems to want to answer these questions. Why do their machines not have selectable tones? Why no iron bias? Why no auto noise cancellation? Why do their modes simply change the notch and not the processing? Just answer the questions. There may be some very good reasons that we are not aware of for all these missing features, although I doubt it. I don't want to knock Garrett. I grew up using their machines amongst many others and I have fond memories of those times but, things have moved on, a lot! and I can't help but feel that Garrett has been coasting on past glories for far too long now. I "hope" the Vortex is more than we have seen but I am not holding my breath.

Automatic tracking on a metal detector is a double-edged sword. True, if you're hunting an area that has vast mineralization changes, it's a great feature. Just know you may sacrifice depth as a result of this feature. I like fixed and hunt with it solely here in the minerilized VA soil. What I like most is to leave it fixed alongside the use of a shortcut button to re ground balance. The same issues can be said about sensitivity. Emf disturbances can vary constantly at sites, too. An automatic gb feature would be great. However, it's not a show stopper, in my opinion.
I would argue that what matters most to us "detectorists" is , performance, performance, performance.
Does the machine discriminate well at depth? Does it go deep? Does the machine cancel iron as well in ground, as the demo given in the live video from Garret?
The people will decide the fate of any company, can't wait for the in the field reviews soon to come.
    Appreciate your critiques Calabash.

Well...that was informative..to say the least. I own and use many different make machines and here's my take on what I think Garrett are/were hoping to accomplish: they call this the world's first "fully upgrade-able" metal detector. Now I am not sure what they are trying to say here but if I understand it correctly the pitch is that as you progress on your metal detecting experience and abilities, you are able to pay for increased additional upgrade features that can be programmed into each machine, thereby upgrading its performance from its existing level to the next level. How this process differs from the software updates that Nokta and Minelab already continuously offer to their clients machines free of charge I am not sure. If that is/was their intention or marketing plan then one would think that the VX9 version/model would be the flagship and should have been made/offered as the top of the line model, already possessing newer state of the art technologies and obviously incorporating all the expected features that are currently lacking and identified in this video, plus even more. That version would be at the highest price point, and then the VX5 and VX7 offering less features than the VX9, and at lower price points respectively. That way they would be satisfying the requirement to produce a unit that possesses the expected and demanded features of experienced users in an industry/hobby where technology and user required features are advancing every few months. This strategy would also offer less complicated versions to the beginners/entry level users. Interestingly enough, I still have and use my 12 year old Garrett AT Pro International, however its use is limited to one specific hunting aspect that I feel it does well at and that is finding Canadian clad.(live in Canada) In comparison to my Equinox and Legend features, performance, and technology my AT Pro is a technological dinosaur. So we will wait to see how the market responds to this machine. Cheers!

I’ll take the Vanquish 540 over the Garrett Vortex

I guess if the 9 was $400 it would be a good entry level, Like you I was looking for something really good from America and I was even big Garrett guy from the 80's and 90's ...The last ones I really liked was the Master Hunters series, Fisher too has disappointed with no new features ...Rain Jacket...are you kidding me !
I did find a lot of gold with the CZ-21, but it's out the door now too
I liked the you guys are FIRED part

Agree with what you said, it's just recycled tech that the other companies have with techno babble to try and dress it up. As for target ID I have both Notka and Minelab detectors and have never had an issue with either about what the ID says about what I'm about to dig in regular circumstances.

Sounds like I may need to get a Nokta when I which one I want.

Garrett’s are like toys. They work and have found me a lot of stuff but the technology is lacking.

It's unfortunately all true. I started on a Garrett. I'm a big fan of American Made but this seems like a flop. Especially after the Legend made many of these missing features affordable. Hard to believe this was their response.

I live over in England and i always get drawn into this new detector BS
The main uk Garrett dealer are making it sound like something massive is coming in the real world it's all a sale's pitch.
I have an XP Deus 1 with a 9inch coil and even though its old it hits the targets everytime and folds away to fit in a small backpack.
I have a back up detector the Vanquish 340 and even though it's a £220 basic detector it hits 99% of the test targets i put down from tiny coins to large hoard shaped objects

Great content. I see you like photography too. I am a novice when it comes to photography. I recently bought a Canon EOS XSI with two lenses (18-55 mm and a 55-250mm) from a Goodwill for $35. Is that a good starter set for the price?

Very thorough analogy of the Vortex, the best I’ve seen. Only question I have is will there be those updates mentioned by Calvin in the future? Such as a VX11

I do not buy a detector based on what might or might not happen in the future. Thanks for watching!

There was a storm coming but guess it blew over with little or nothing to show for it, lol. I’m still hoping for a miracle and it’s ok.

I feel sorry for the Garrett engineers. Their hands must be so sore for sitting on them!

Too bad our top domestic metal detecting company doesn't invest the time & resources to build a better product to compete with the BIG2 ! They need to get Jase Robertson in and raise some cane!

Bring back the good old day with the original DEUS…

What makes the original Deus better than the Deus 2? And since you can still buy the Deus 1, why was it better in the "good old days?" Just genuinely curious.

Your opinion matters brother. I was just thinking of you yesterday missing your info. I checked to see if you were back. I'm so glad you're back.
