    I rebuilt my own Series 2.25 Petrol engine, apart from the re-bore I did it all myself, it's a simple robust engine all the information to rebuild it is in the FANTASTIC GREEN BIBLE so only have me to blame if it goes wrong. Most of the issues you highlighted would not have occurred had a reasonably diligent, interested and somewhat literate person with some mechanical knowledge rebuilt your engine. As a result of several bad experiences, I now check everything and trust no one to do anything critical (apart from my Doc obviously) for me and try to do everything myself.
    At least this way I understand the equipment much better and am in a better place to fix it if I have to. It is not necessarily cheaper or quicker to do this but it is much more satisfying when everything works. If it doesn't work then I only have myself to blame and am more knowledgeable and experienced than I was to begin with. PS it does not take 1 month to rebuild a Land Rover Series 2.25 Petrol Engine. I would ROAST them online so others know to avoid having the same expensive and incompetent work done.

    the later 2.25 and 2.5 (90/110) petrols actually received a mod later on where they did inject RTV into the crank seal voids, so there may be some method in the madness. But everything else sounds terrible, and inexcusable.

    Geoff, that is such a shame! I have only recently been aware of your videos, love them. I have succesfully rebuilt quite a few motorbike engines never a car mind you but soon I'll be moving onto my 2a motor, I have another in peices and all I can say is, what a fantastically easy engine to take appart. As for rebuilding, well measure and double check several times, get the machining done by a small local fella like what it sounds you have found for yours and yeah the rest is really just lego and follow the manual. I'd say the first time your engine was rebuilt itd perhaps been left to a apprentice, or someone who really didnt give a toss. Thats my thoughts anyway. Im blown away at how little effort someone put into your first engine recon. They really shouldve been more aware of your social media presents & think they should certainly pay up, it may be too late but have your new fella take photos and write down measurements of previous work to take back to them.

    nowadays its difficult to find a shop who really does a good job rebuilding an engine, especialy an old one like this., although particular this engine is quite easy. you must do your homework choosing the right place to do the job. sometimes its better to find a specialist and recommended mecanic who is willing to do the job and just give away the boring and planning of the block and the head.
    either way its a gamble and you have to stay on top of the project as much as possible, but not that much that the mecanic throw the box with nuts and bolts to your feed and scream "... than do it by yourself ..." than the real fun starts, like in my case.
    but its good for experience and hopefully victory at the end.
    cheers

    i am by no means an expert but i believe the lt95 issue could be from the seal between the transfer and gearbox letting oil through. I believe that you can make an oil transfer/balancing thing that aleivates the issue with some barb and hose fittings between the tc and gb.
    edit: also could it be from a blocked breather forcing the oil from one to another due to pressure?

    I feel your pain no engine rebuild should be this disastrous you have had to endure a heap of faults which were not of your fault.
    2.25 engines were designed in the fifties they are not rocket science follow the manufactures specifications and Blind Freddy can assemble them and they will run.
    I sincerely hope they sort it and you have every right under Australian consumer law to extract compensation for an unsatisfactorily repaired engine. Check out consumer law re fit for purpose/ adequate life expectancy of repaired products. This may not be the actual heading i would consult John Cadogan regarding this particular aspect he is well versed in the subject and can lead you in the right direction.
    All the best Gippy

    Hi Geoff, mate that same team did my 4BD1 in Pinjarra and the rear main leaked after 500ks , pulled the engine and the welsh plug at the rear of the cam had come out and was pi****g oil along with the R/main and the clutch was cactus, it was new on re-fit of engine. I also found copious amounts of red silicone every were mostly in the oil pick up mesh .
    On ringing them, I had let a year and 1/2 elapse before I had time to fit after rebuild so they wiped their hands of it.
    Any way enough griping I too had a long list and now the County is on the road again, fingers crossed. Stay safe regards Banjo from Karratha.

  • @reginaldhowell2261
    @reginaldhowell2261 Před 3 měsíci

    Hi Geoff sorry to hear this tale , i think its the work of a snotty nosed apprentice sounds like they didnt put the correct thrust washers in so every time you depress the clutch the crankshalf would move excessively who knows what vibration that would cause , as for the mainseal gaskets generally i would say the gray high temp sealant is a much better deal than using the cork T seals because they have tendency to deteriorate with age , i was advised by West coast rover 20 yrs ago to do that , which i have done to at least 2 or 3 times ( the one i drive regularly i didnt even renew the main bearings , which you should if you pull the main bearings apart) . As for the ring gap either incorect size rings or very poor quality i' m assume the engine has 'nt done many kms after the rebuild .and if they hadnt acid dipped the block they should have at least used compressed air and wire to probe the water galleys ( it does take time !) And tighning the camshalf bolt is not to hard to do .if the engine didnt do much work , it may be possible to rering and new big ends and mains,thrust washers seals and some one who is a competent mechanic to reassemble it and i do'nt think the 2.25 is that complex to work on anyway i hope you have better fortune this next time .R

    • @seriouslyseriesaustralia
      @seriouslyseriesaustralia Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Reg. You are spot on and I agree with you. The ring gaps were way off, amongst other things. The sad thing is that this was the same companies attempt at rebuilding the motor and they still stuffed it up. Anyway I have at a local mechanical established now and hopefully I may have it back soon and I can put the four year tale behind me. Thank you for your comment. Kind regards, Geoff

  • @nickwalker147
    @nickwalker147 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Just to add to the comments--the 2.25L is such a simple engine to rebuild compared to something modern. Some of the core plugs are fiddly to remove-the small ones just below deck height spring to mind. Yes the rocker arms bushings are not supplied to size, and need reaming after fitting and the cam bearings need to fit properly need a driver turned up. But any competent engine rebuilder should be easily able to do these. Very disappointing and I'd be really annoyed too

    Alot of people spit on rovers and a disrespectfull to the marke. Seems like somone grumbled and did a crap rebuild. Have you pulled the motor apart yourself geoff? I think you can have good compression butnupon installation maybe an oil ring was broken? But wouldnt a spark plug be oily?

      Hi Matt. The motor has been stripped and has nearly been rebuilt for the third time. Alot was wrong with it, the ring gaps were way off and the oil pump failed, timing was out by 180 degrees and the list goes on. Kind regards, Geoff

    Sounds like you got a rattle can rebuild! They didn’t even boil out the block!😱
    May I pick your brain?
    My 1966 S2A, in 4th gear at higher RPMs has a very loud wine. Overdrive only increases the noise. With the high / low lever in neutral, I ran through the gears, and no noise.
    Possibly output shaft bearing?
    Or ??

    • @nickwalker147
      @nickwalker147 Před 8 měsíci +2

      The series gearbox does have a lot of whine in 4th gear, but if its excessive-transfer case output shaft bearings or intermediate shaft bearings. Worn high range gearset in transfer case can also contribute too
