Shunosaurus | The Clubbed Tail Sauropod That Dominated China

  • If you took the Ankylosaurus and Diplodocus, and then mashed them together, you would get the Shunosaurus. This Late Jurassic Chinese Sauropod had the best of both worlds, the speed of the diplodocus’s tail and the might of the Ankylosaurus’ club. Armed with this very unique weapon, the Shunosaurus was able to conquer its environment, outnumbering all others 9 to 1.

Perhaps the creature's abundance in comparison to larger and longer sauropods, small size, and short neck are a relic of its ecology. A heavily forested enviroment tends to favour smaller animals, like forest elephants(as opposed to bush or desert elephants which grow much larger) perhaps because of its smaller size shunosaurus was better adapted at moving through a d exploiting close forested enviroments.

One of the reasons why short-neck sauropods evolved was due to a lack of iguanodontids and later hadrosaurus(es?) and that they evolved to exploit that vegetation that other herbivores, mostly, ignored. Still Great Job! :)
