As a truck driver of 25 years, yes... but so much more. The weather has a tendency to remind us of how small we are from time to time, and during those times, we must bow to her, and adjust our plans accordingly.

Riding a two wheeled motorbike is a risk.
One either has the ability to deal with that or not.
Experience, skills and confidence are key to such.

As a life long Bay Area native and frequent coast rider, you did a great job with the weather you had to work with! To bad you picked the absolute worst year for weather!! If you ever get back out here, try doing the coast at the end of September and through October. Not much fog that time of year! Grat job! Looking forward to the next one!

I really enjoy your videos. There is one aspect, however, that I didn't realize I enjoyed until I thought about it. That is...the food. Amanda, you eat some awesome food. I know the feeling of riding all day, sometimes in challenging conditions. There's nothing like great food to counter whatever a long day on the road throws at you. Thanks for taking me along.

Retired CA state public safety after 26 years. Worked during many atmospheric rivers, El Niños, La Nñias and various droughts followed by torrential downpours over the years. Spent many hours manning road closures. Same with summer wildland fires, including thick smoke followed by rockslides/mudslides. My last CA coast ride was the middle of July 2022. Departed San Jose towards the coast on US-101, down through Castroville to Moss Landing, then up the coast on the PCH (CA-1) into SF, across the Golden Gate Bridge, back to the 101, then SR-37 inland. Spectacular. Wouldn't trade a ride like that for just about anything.

I grew up on this coast and I've driven up and down it so many times I can't count ^-^ Never as a whole thing like this, tho. So I have been under an atmospheric river more than a few times.
    Glad you were able to make it to Santa Cruz! Sorry it was so wet ^-^ But after several years of way below average rain, we needed time to store some up. The highway by my neighborhood is still missing a big chunk (and consequently has a one-lane light) as we're still digging out from under those storms! A couple of those storms near the end dropped snow on us and the beach. Very surprising to ride around a hill and hey, snow! in the Santa Cruz Mountains ^-^;

Your video work just keeps getting better and better! Funny that you mentioned the rain in CA. In the the 1970’s . That was 1978., I was into long distance bicycle touring then. Myself and a companion intended to ride from LA to Eureka. There was a forecast for rain but not long term. We expected 1-3 days of rain between La and SF . It rained for 7 days straight. It didn’t stop until EL Granada. I think it was shortly after that trip I bought my first motorcycle.

Man, I'm sorry the weather threw you a curve ball. This was a rough year for California rain wise, for sure! It's disappointing you didn't get to do Hwy 1 from Cambria (I love that town) to Carmel, which is arguably the quintessential section. It's been in so many commercials. The section north of SF is also awesome and really doesn't get the credit it deserves.
It was super awesome they gave you a cabin upgrade. Man, slogging through rain all day only to set up camp in the rain... just... sucks. While I live probably 45 minutes from there, I'll have to take note of that place to share cuz good folks deserve a little help.
    End Screen Crew question response:
Oh have I! I've been rained on all day in Yellowstone and caught in a white out hailstorm on UT-12. Both on the same trip! And many more over the years. Mother Nature does what Mother Nature does. I guess I just have to go back. And since I'd be in the neighborhood, ride Beartooth again. Now THERE'S a cherry on top of that dessert. 😊

What a fun bit of photo journalism, loved it. As a native Washingtonian, the first thing that came to mind was I wonder if she's going to discuss how Malibu is really not that enjoyable to ride through or is it going to be about how there's hardly a straight 100 yard stretch of road on Hwy 101 once your enter Oregon heading north. Sorry about the weather, OMGGGG...what bad timing. i'm not a fan of Adventure moto touring in the rain and do everything to avoid it.

And there was Amanda, riding in it, lol. Brave lady. The lane splitting is something you get used to. I do it with my Harley bagger. Ya just have to judge how wide you (your bike, not you) are and go for it. Very nive video.

Man, I have never even heard of an atmospheric river before, let alone be in one. Lol. Though, watching you ride in the raid kinda makes me want to get better wet weather gear. I just have a Frogg Toggs rain suit I roll up on the back of the sporty on those days it looks like it might get wet. BUT, I have also learned that a quick spring shower is no big deal, because you will dry off in a few minutes after it ends. Lol

That wx just sux. In August of 2022 my riding partner and I rode the PCH from Santa Monica to Monterey, after having completed a Route 66 ride from Michigan. The PCH was insanely magnificent. We did not expect to have so much fun. It was a bit chilly after coming out of the desert (113f was the hottest day) however we certainly didn’t experience your conditions. We got some marine layer that rolled in and out occasionally, a low of 47 and a high of 72 that day. Some fog off and on. I hope you got some better weather and could enjoy the magnificent views.

September/October is the best time of year to ride the coast. You beat the inland heat, you're generally clear of the wildfire smoke, and you're least likely to hit the fog. Plus, the roads are usually repaired from the winter storms by then.

I've made the trip twice and still missed a lot of stuff. Did your gopro die around the 7 minute mark? I always liked the area from Malibu to about Santa Barbra and you skipped it. I know the weather wasn't cooperating too. It made me wonder when you did this trip, knowing of all the flooding in the first few months of the year. It seems, starting in Santa Monica, the cliffs fall down on the PCH and often block the road too. So, not too scenic.
I've stayed in Cambria, just north of Morro Bay. And at the infamous Madonna Inn in San Luis Obisbo. One of the more relaxing moments was stopping at Carmel, getting some chilled adult beverages and walking down to the beach at Sunset. Among the things I missed are driving along the 17 miles drive at Pebble Beach and the giant sequoia. Pebble Beach can be crowded so I didn't feel bad passing on that but the trees, THAT I do want to go back to see. So I'll be looking forward to the next video with a touch of envy.
My sisters family lives North of San Francisco in wine country so I know I will be back. I would like to start around Muir Beach and take it all the way to all the way around Olympic National Park. I've day tripped out to Bodega Bay which was really nice (and also where Hitchcock shot The Birds- so BE SAFE Amanda, lol).
    Good stuff.
