  • Here's a revised video that I made about my grandfather, Frank Hadra, and the Eccles, WV 1914 mine disaster that he survived. My grandfather and father never mentioned the disaster to me. I found out about it when I read my grandfather's Naturalization papers. In 2000 I traveled to Scarbro, Eccles and Beckley to research my family. I knew that my grandmother died there somewhere in 1913. After a few days of searching records and talking to people I visited the Eccles Post Office, There on the wall was a display of newspaper articles and photos of the 1914 Mine Disaster. The postmaster at the time mentioned that he had a copy of "They Died in the Darkness" and if I wanted to copy the pages about Eccles. As I read the account I was totally shocked to see my grandfather's name, Frank Hadra, listed as a survivor in No, 6! Let me know what you think about it.

Thank you for your hard work on this video. It's hauntingly beautiful. My Grandfather and Great Grandfather were killed in Harlan Co Kentucky. You do an excellent job paying tribute to your relative who survived (thank God) as well as those poor unfortunate men who did not make it out alive.

Great piece of work. I briefly lived in Princeton and worked in Welch back in 1978 and developed an affinity for WV.

Great job Dennis. My great grandfather (Stoots) and generations of relatives (Stoots, Stone) to the time they shut it down worked there. Spent many evenings talking to the hoist man as he pulled that black gold up from the holes.

Dennis, my family are the Vance’s and the Duncan’s. I think my cousin Pat Duncan still lives there. My grandfather was Ed Vance and he was an electrician in the Eccles mine for decades.

Thank you Dennis, extremely well done. My grandparents lived in Eccles. My grandfather, dad, and my uncle worked in the Eccles Mines. My grandfather’s name was Okey Bostic, grandmother was Bernice Bostic and their 2 sons were my dad, Elwood Bostic and his brother Forest Bostic. Not sure the number of years that they lived there but they eventually built a house on Harper Road. As a small child I do remember going to the Country Store. Thank you again for a story well told.
