    Boy, was Brad Park solid in this game. He set up P Mavholich for a great goal that told the Soviets they were in a series. So many great plays, so many dirty plays, but all came down to the heart. Who loves hockey more? Canada loves hockey. This is what this series taught us. Today we use the old Soviet system a lot, killing penalties, todays game is a lot faster.

    As for the many illegal line changes the Soviets attempted in the first period, they surely knew that in international and NHL rules the home team changes last. If the officials had assessed a bench minor for delay of game in the first period (versus waiting til the 2nd period to penalize them), that mayve hurried the game along. I am also baffled that Kharlamov was not ejected after bumping the referee. Nowadays that would fetch you an epic suspension. Pete Mahovlich's career highlight for sure

      Give your head a shake. No way the Russians would purposely lose. This was the cold war and the series became like a war. The Soviets did all they could to win and in Russia, the refs were very bias towards the Soviets and some of the calls against Canada were appalling. Also the Soviets bugged their room, stole their coke and other supplies and did everything they could to try to throw Canada off their game. Canadians were angry about getting ambushed in game 1, decided to play old style NHL in game 2. Lots of flying tackles, punches to the face and cross-checks. Cashman, Parise and Clarke led the way. Russians were clearly uncomfortable and lost.

      @daved3713 Před 9 lety

      Flying tackles don't win you games, just look at what happened with the Flyers when they faced the Canadiens in '76.
      Canada won this game by putting the puck in the net. Soviets were playing dirty as well, but, they failed to put the puck in the net enough times and lost.

      Jonathan C
      That is true, but, when the opponents get stronger, as in the Canadiens,
      things like that won't work as effectively. It also won't work when things get called. Game 6 of the Summit Series, crappy ref's gave Canada so many penalities, it seemed like everything they did became suspect. They still won the game, but, it is almost suicidal to play like that.

    • @joncheskin
      @joncheskin Před 9 lety +3

      Even Phil Esposito said later that part of the secret to their eventual success was to convince the Russians that they were "crazy". I think this style helped change the tone of the series in Game 2, but you are correct that they probably won the series because of the actual hockey they played in Games 6-8 when they were finally in playing shape and had evolved into a team. Bobby Clarke's stick thwack that broke Kharlamov's ankle was probably the low point, but what can you expect from Clarke? He was proud of it afterwards.

      I'm a long time (58 yrs) Leaf fan, but the Canadiens dismantling of the Red Army team on New Year's eve in 1979 was the
      greatest game I've ever seen. The Habs outshot them something like 48-13 and were flying. Guys like Courneyer were
      diving face first at the blue line to stop Soviet shots. It doesn't seem as fast looking at it today because the players are a
      lot faster now, but it was the fastest, most entertaining game I'd seen up til that time. oh yeah, the score was a 3-3 tie.
