Gonna stop you there. Bad advice about the "she killed my fish" ABSOLUTELY file a police report in situations like that. Even if she can't be charged, that police report showing a history of violent actions is enough to ensure she has a record building. Someone that kills things just to make themselves feel something different would be classified as mentally ill and NOT reporting these kind of things is how someone ends up with a girlfriend killing them in their sleep and getting off with no charges because they cried in the trial.
As someone that has lived through and survived domestic abuse a couple times, if you don't report it when it happens, no one will believe it later.

Agreed. And this may be enough for him to get a domestic violence protection order against her, especially if she admitted to it in writing via text. She retaliated to the breakup by killing his pets. He’d be very much justified in being afraid for his own safety. And usually if there’s an active protection order it would bar her from having certain jobs around vulnerable people, and serve as a warning sign for anyone wanting to date her in the future.
He could probably also recoup the cost of the dead fish in small claims court but it might not be worth the stress.

She basically put some rocks in his tank when they broke up first decor or smthn idk she just found them right after they broke up and decided to put them in my dads 25 gallon. Well the rocks kinda dissolved in the tank and killed all his fish. I wouldn’t say it was her fault just cuz she had never had fish and thought “oh he would like the rocks probably” idk I wasn’t alive when this happened so I don’t have all the details.

success-ish story: I was keeping my betta in a bowl "until I found it a new home" The "home" I was looking at was 3 gallons which I now realize is not enough. Randomly my neighbor was dropping something off and my mom and dad somehow got the topic over to how I was keeping a fish. She then told us about how she had a 6.5-gallon tank that she was trying to get rid of. I got the tank and a month later put in the betta and some neon tetras (I know that's not big enough). I am now saving up money to switch all my fish over to a 20-gallon and this time I'm going to make this one a planted tank and not overstock it this time.

    • @rainbowstalkerthe2nd587

A 1 gallon bowl is just fine for bettas. I kept them happy & healthy in the same one (one after another, not at the same time...) for 2-5 years.
They had a soft, plastic plant at the bottom on top of smooth pebbles & a peace lily at the top to keep the lil buggers from jumping out.
They got stimulation from toys & mirrors that I played with them every couple of days. I'd change out 2/3 of the water every week or 2 (more in the summer, less in the winter) & they were perfectly happy.

QOTW; This took place when I was 5yrs and both of my parents were avid fishkeepers. My Mom had a 100gl for Mr.Oscar who she taught to ring a bell for food! My Dad had different fish until he went overboard with Discus fish...F those fish they're total jerks. Anyways I was 5yrs and it was time to get fish for the 20gl that had been in my room for what felt like an eternity with everything but fish. Pick your favorite fish. Any fish you want and we'll base the rest off of that one. To everyone's surprise I picked a goldfish, it must have been in the feeder tank, but a goldfish. Now this wasn't just any goldfish...it was swimming sideways fighting not to flip upside down. It had not two but only one eye. Fins and tail were just fractions and memories. That one! Umm...the store employee looked at my Mom painfully aware of state of the goldfish, I don't know she said again looking to my Mom. Try as she might to get me interested in any other fish nothing else would do and at 5 not understanding the weight of my Mother's words she gave in and said "You're going to learn a valuable lesson out of this". With a sad face the employee didn't charge for the now almost completely upside down fish I carefully held in it's bag of somehow rapidly becoming slimmey water. "Just come back tomorrow and we'll try again. Remember the tank was in my room and my Mom said like birds sometimes you need to cover the tank over night, clearly not wanting me to wake up first to see the aftermath of my 5yr old little girl decision. Next morning he was alive, and the next, and then again!! That one eyed goldfish grew back fin's and a tail, not his eye that wasn't coming back. I had him for over 12yrs and moved 3 states with him. I used to think it was the love of my 5yr old heart that magically kept him alive and nursed him to health but I think we all know it was my Mom who wanted my little 5yr self to stay in a place ignorant bliss a little bit longer...not sure how she did it but she was the one who saved him.

    • @tiger_844
      @tiger_844 Před 4 měsíci +12

@alexmic3577 it had nothing to do with the tank itself. Rather my own stupidity lol
Basically, I had my goldies in a big round 10-15 gallon bucket with their filters, heater, plants, and driftwood. It was just a temporary setup for them to keep everything working and alive while I emptied my 60 gallon (I was preparing to transfer everything to my 75 gallon). Well, the first mistake I made was putting HOB filters along the rim of a ROUND bucket. Keep in mind the entire time I was working on emptying my 60 gallon aquarium, the filters hadn't leaked onto the floor or anything. So I thought the filters would be fine. Now, my second mistake. I left to go take a 2-3 hour final exam on my college campus. I thought that because nothing had gone wrong while I was there, everything would be fine while I was gone. I had pressed the bucket with the filters against the wall to make sure the filters didn't tip or fall out while I was gone. This inadvertently created a "path" for the water to pump out the back of the filter and onto the carpet the entire time I was gone. My dad only noticed when water started coming down from the ceiling.
My goldies are now in their brand new 75 gallon tank! And they couldn't be happier! If you check out reddit, I made an update!

I didn’t even know you could keep them in a tank.
When I was in high school we had one that lived in a burrow in our backyard.
Whenever we had fruit or vegetables that were leftover or just a little too ripe, I’d chop them up and leave them near her burrow.
If we went too many days without feeding her, then around dusk we’d hear this tapping on the sliding door, and she would be there banging on the door with her claws.
      They’re really cool animals.

QOTW; SUCCESS! Bought my 70 year old, lonely mother a tank for her birthday. Set it up while she wasn't paying attention. Got some plants for it and a little tunnel. Told her once it cycles, I'll let her pick out a betta.
A little while later, she's picking out the perfect little buddy and a companion snail like an excited kid. She hasn't owned a pet in 60 years. She took 3 days to name it so it was perfect too. Finley O'Gill and Paddy McSnail O'Two.
A week later, she's buying every toy she could find and fussing over feeding time and tasty snacks.
Just hit month 3 and she decided to upgrade them both. Finley and Paddy will soon find themselves the sole residents of a FIFTEEN GALLON TANK!
    Spoiled a$$ fish! 😂

For a year I wasn't doing water changes, wasn't maintaining, my fish were dying and the ones that lived were incredibly stressed, and I felt like the worst human alive because I knew how to care for my fish. I've never had a tank leak or break, or need any kind of repairs, and my youngest tank is 48 years old. My oldest tank is 68 years old. Most of my 28 tanks are between 68-60 years old. They are my dads tanks he bought when he lived in Florida. Since then the tanks have traveled to Texas, New York, Chicago, Washington, and have spent 45 years in southeast Alaska. My dad was in the Military and when he was transferred, he packed up his fish and tanks, and transferred them with the family! When he decided to get out of fish, he gave all his tanks to me, and I took up where he left off. I was 13 I think. He got me started by buying me a matched pair of stunning 3" Black mollies, and a beautiful pair of blood red platties. I branched out to breeding angels, albino cory cats, Firemouth Ciclids, Every color of Mollie available, I can't help it, Sailfin Mollies will always be my sentimental favorites. Black Sharks, and stunning Gold Butterfly Koi.

QOTW I met my future wife at the LFS. She had been working there since she was 18, grew up surrounded by aquariums as her father was a very passionate fish keeper. I would come in to buy fish and equipment, and admittedly would only come in the days I knew she was working. At one point she had to take leave for medical reasons, and my frequenting of the store led to the owner offering me a position. Sadly I didn't realize it was her position. I had been looking forward to working with her. Thankfully she still came in to shop, and one thing led to another, we wound up tying the knot! There was a 10-12 year old girl and her dad that were shopping for fish. They told the employee (he introduced himself as the petco aquatic specialist) and they told him they wanted two plecos and a gourami. When he asked what size tank they have they told him a 5 gallon. QotW; my best success in fishkeeping is just the community I think. I hadn't had a tank since my son was a baby (he's 19 now) after the baby wipe incident (he, as a toddler, thought he was helping me clean the tank... By wiping the interior glass with baby wipes he left in the tank. Lost all the fish☠️) I quit fish. But a couple years ago he found the old 20g in the garage and asked if I'd help him set it up. We went straight to you tube and found this wonderful community, set up his tank as a biotope and joined our local fish club. Now he has 3 tanks and I have two 10g and half a dozen nano tanks spread throughout the house😅. But the communities both here and irl for me, being a lifelong introvert are awesome! So much better than going it alone in the 90's when I was 14 and got my first tank and only had the library and a local fish store for support. So thanks Chris and this channel's fellow fish nerds and the wider fish yt community for being so amazing, helpful, informative and quick to call out animal abuse. That's how I learned pre-filter spomges/mesh screens were a must , way before I started shrimp keeping.

QOTW: my best success was definitely my second betta, Rayla. I went to the pet store with my mom for cat food, saw him on the shelf. He wasn't moving, super pale, just floating on his side. I thought he was dead at first. I spent my last $100 on a 3gal kit and a heater, not really expecting much but wanting him to be comfy in his final moments. Three days later he was getting red on his fins, six months later his fins had totally regrown and his body was fully blue with red fins. He was gorgeous. He only lived two years, but he was my favourite boy

So am feeling those aquarium leaks. I was fortunately home when my 75 gallon show tank sprang a leak, so I was able to hurriedly get my fish into alternate accommodations (yes, they're only swordtails and cory cats, but they're still my sweet little babies). Just got a replacement 75 gallon acrylic tank with a lifetime leak warrantee, got it set back up (fighting black beard algae right now, but all my java ferns and anubias are still merrily growing and sending up new leaves and shoots so I'm not worried about their health, just about the aesthetics of the tank).

My success story would be when I was trimming moss in my celestial pearl danio tank and found 2 newborn fry a week later. I have kept the moss in a bowl of water to make sure any ramshorn I accidentally removed, would be returned to the aquarium. So i see 2 ‘eyelashes’ swimming in the bowl and i freak out since I had never seen fish fry before! Against all odds, they survived for 3 months, got big enough and a couple of weeks ago I reunited them with their fish-folk! I was in a state of constant anxiety to not mess it up and I’m so glad for all the information on the internet. Their names are Crunchy and Max!

Hi! Woman fishkeeper here. Although I live in France, I encounter the same issue. Is not so much that you're told you're worse at fishkeeping, but it's about the attitude. Men, especially older men, will always look down on you, explaining basic stuff because they can't fathom how you could possibly know anything. And if you disagree, you're told that they have 50 years of experience with fish, and you should keep quiet. Being 25, I cannot have that much experience, but I've been keeping fish all my life. Plus I am an engineer in biology. And I breed uncommon species of wild bettas, which are a bit delicate. I know I don't know everything, but I am not a beginner, and I don't like being treated like one. As a result, I have completely isolated myself from the community. Best decision I have ever made.

I had just started keeping shrimp in a 5 gallon tank and i found a bunch of pests in my tank (Planaria, Hydra, Scuds etc). I didn’t know what to do so i looked online and found out that using dog de-wormer could be an option, so i dosed the tank with it and all the worms and hydra were gone. But there were still scud so i did a full clean up of the tank but somehow the scud came back. So i did a full full clean up too set it up as a dirtied tank. It has been running now for over a week and shows no signs of scud. (Im only 12 i should not have to be going through this suffering).

About the beliefs of "women are bad at fish keeping": actually, anything that usually men do, they claim women are bad at. That is why most don't like to claim their gender or post anonimously in groups etc. Video games, aquarist groups, technical groups, fishing sports etc. The moment others learn they are talking to a woman, their whole attitude changes, and start to A) talk like they are dealing with an idiot, B) come up with pick-up lines, C) try to change their own behiavor stating "ladies here, behave". Annoying. Last week I went to pick up a secondhand speaker set and the guy looked at me like "how the hell am I going to talk about specifics with this one", and visibly looked relieved when my dad showed up behind me. No matter that I knew just as much about the topic.

QOTW success story: I bought a betta for my son for Christmas since he's been begging for a fish for a long time. He's always loved aquariums, and I haven't had the motivation/room for a proper aquarium. I started with a 6 gallon tank, obsessively watched all your videos, realized I gave my poor betta fin rot, and was doing everything wrong in a planted tank. So I upgraded to a 20 gallon, got nutrient rich substrate, more plants and wood to scape it with. We even added some shrimp and snails! Betta's doing fantastic and honestly probably getting fat. It's tough to teach a 7 year old that fish don't need to eat so much. Especially since I'm sure the betta's ate a few of the shrimp in the new tank. Maybe not too successful for the shrimp, but the betta is living his best life! 😅

Hello from Germany: The stick in the shrimp / Oto tank is actually shrimp food. It's quite common here for shrimp keepers (it's called "lolly" here) - you can both buy it (I recommend Schmitt Aquaristik) as find a lot DIY recipes for this. It is soooooo much fun to watch the shrimp feeding on the stick. Especially when you want to get an overview of your shrimp. Also some Otos love them. And the tank brand is Dennerle - a great German brand with beautiful tanks, especially for nano tanks / shrimp tanks / small scapes.

Anyway had an old fish pass and my mom scooped it out and later allllll of my fish were dead. I have been heartbroken and feeling guilty for not searching for the net when I realized it was missing. I assumed in the kids room, but my mom said it was under the sink, I assume the kids slipped it through the crack bc the child lock allows a small gap of the door to open. I have a 20 gallon with 6 black skirt tetras and a pleco. I used to have 6 guppies as well but they all passed away early because of aggression with my tetras. My tetras hadn't shown aggression when I first got them but unfortunately about 6 months later started attacking my guppies :( . I had done a ton of research and most of my sources said they'd be great tank mates. But they were not. I also have 4 nerite snails and do a water change every 1-2 weeks depending on how dirty the tank is. I feed them fish flakes and occasionally boiled vegetables and my pleco usually eats algae patties with a bunch of other healthy ingredients. I only have one live plant in the tank and it's a golden pot god and it seems to be doing well in there. If you guys have any advice for my husbandry I would appreciate it!!

I don't have fish yet as I am waiting for the big 3 Nitrogens to chill. I am fully planted now! My biggest success was me letting my property management know about the tank thinking I was fine (I had already scaped and started cycling it, so I couldn't return nothing). Turns out they did not put "aquariums" under the lease, but as "fish tanks". And the answer to having fish tanks initially was no. Fortunately they talked with the owner and just had to make sure my renters insurance covered a spill. 12 bucks a year more on the insurance and I was cleared to keep fish!
