The concept of SHODAN genuinely frightens me and makes me think that if we achieve true AI and it grows narcissistic and goes rogue, we're fucked as a species.

I'm honestly not worried when I look at what SHODAN is. Sentient Hyper Optimized Data Access Network. She is the Citadel Station WiFi router. If you work in corporate, you know how screwed up and ineffectual these kind of things really are; a realistic SHODAN would lock up and break in a matter of hours

You could crash older systems by doing infinite loops, modern stuff detects this and throws an error instead. I can see paradoxes being the same.

System Shock isn't a gritty realistic take on the problem of sapient AI (even sentient is the wrong word; a sentient creature is one that can feel, a sapient creature is one that can think), it is a tribute to 80s cyberpunk film and fiction. Citadel Station is Tri-Op's testing ground for many, many R&D projects, and sapient AI is one of them. They perfect it in System Shock 2, where Xerxes is the AI for the Von Braun, but he obviously has his ethical restraints left safely in place. He is only a minor presence in that game's story.
It's worth noting that IRL, the US military and Congress will jump through crazy hoops just to give their projects catchy acronyms instead of completely practical and accurate names. The PATRIOT Act, MAGIC CARPET (yes, really), etc.
SHODAN is also pretty dumb on a few occasions. Despite the fact that she apparently started charging the mining laser, she's unable to detect that you've overridden the safety on it (something I would definitely expect an AI responsible for the safety of a space station to know about even if it is a manual override) and stop the laser from firing. She is so egotistical that she prevents you from taking the life pod to safety after inputting the System Authorization Code purely out of spite, even though this would have been a very bad ending for you as SHODAN would have gotten away safely on the Bridge while you and Tri-Op would have thought that SHODAN was dead in the explosion. The logical thing to do would have been to let you leave and bide her time, because all of her plans were foiled; she has nothing left except the cyborgs left in the Bridge.
