I turned up the volume on the back country road. The wheat fields to my right waved goodbye to me as I made my way into the unknown. As I was thinking about the poetry in that, Manchester Orchestra proclaimed, “I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m going anyway.” I smiled and began to sing along. My left arm hung out the window. The sun shone down on the universe with love and it was neither cold nor hot. Neither dry nor humid. It was all as it was, and it was all as it should be. Perfection.
The road weaved and wandered along. I was so content. I felt love. Life had really been a trip to this point full of ups and downs, but it really seemed like everything was really coming together now. It had all led up to this moment, I thought. I had a place here. The car heaved its way with not a soul around. What an amazing drive!
I leaned into the next curve, driving into the unseen. Welcoming all that would come. In an instant, a Mack truck pulling a full load of gravel came in the other direction in my lane. The trucker laid on their horn. It was weighed down and couldn’t move in time. I tried to weave, but couldn’t get over into the oncoming lane fast enough. The collision was horrific. My car’s entire right half was crushed like an accordion into the weight of the other. It wasn’t a fair fight at all. The dump truck flowed smoothly through me and I could hear it screeching to a halt on the road behind me. I rolled over with my car as my entire seat and body exited the vehicle on one of the rolls down into a ravine on the side of the road.
The bumps and bangs slowly subsided as I came to rest in the aftermath. I lay there unable to move. I looked up at the sky from the car seat I was still affixed to. I was numb to the pain that I’m sure existed in every pore, bone, and organ in my body.
After what seemed like forever, I heard the ambulances and fire trucks in the distance. The noises grew closer and I was relieved. Finally, I was going to be okay. However, the trucks stopped away from me and I could tell that they were at the Mack truck. I could hear the driver tell the emergency workers that I came out right in front of them and caused the event. The emergency workers were so thankful that the trucker was okay. They stood and talked with them for a bit longer until one of the firemen suggested they come check on me.
They looked down at me from the road as I sat in the gulley. One of them said to the other, “Seems to have gotten what he deserved. Some people are so careless out here.” He motioned to the other to give him a hand and they made their way to me. They unbuckled the seatbelt and they each grabbed a wrist. They turned and dragged my body by my wrists out of the seat and up the side of the roadway onto the pavement. I thought that would be the end of their mistreatment, but they didn’t stop. They continued to pull my scraping, limp body along the road 200 feet back to their trucks.
The waiting EMT opened the back of the truck, and then he grabbed my ankles. The workers heaved back and then forth, letting go as my limp body was tossed into the ambulance. I banged into the side of the cabinetry inside. I could have sworn that I heard one of them call me a piece of shit as the doors slammed shut. I laid on the floor and felt the truck take off toward the hospital.
What a nightmare this had become! I had no idea what was happening, and yet it kept happening. We arrived at the hospital and I heard the EMT from the passenger side tell the nurse that I caused an accident out on Highway 22. The nurses opened the back of the ambulance and pulled me out. They placed me onto a gurney and rolled me inside. They didn’t check my vitals. They didn’t rush. They just talked with each other about how sorry they felt for the truck driver, but thankful they were doing okay. I was wheeled down a corridor and put into a room with no monitors. No television. No windows. The bright lights shined down from above and I sat there looking at the ceiling.
I felt my own lights dim. A doctor came in at some point and told a nurse that I should get hooked up to a respirator because my breathing was getting shallow. The nurse responded by asking the doctor if she had to. He sighed and said unfortunately, yes. They did the work they were required to do, and I thought that just maybe I would get out of this one. I wasn’t quite sure what I did to deserve this, but once I got out I was never coming back. The machine that helped me breathe was really helping. I thought of happy days again.
About a day or so later, I was still held up in the room. I had only been given water while I was there. The doctor only peaked through the window of the door from the hallway to make sure the heartbeat monitor was doing something and continued on his rounds. I didn’t know what my condition was to others, but I was aware of my surroundings. Is this what a coma was? I couldn’t tell. I still was numb to the pain I’m sure there was, so maybe that was a good sign that I was unconscious to them all.
My eyes saw the door open. I was in shock as the trucker entered the room. How did they even know I was in here? Probably one of those garbage emergency workers if I had to guess. They all seemed to love them for some reason. They seemed unphased from the accident. I couldn’t move. I watched as the trucker sauntered up to me and grabbed my arm. They squeezed hard as they bent over the side of my bed, reaching toward the wall with their other hand. I heard the flatlining of my heart monitor. The truck driver came back up to my field of vision. They stared at me for a second with a smirk and revealed the plug from the machine. They moved close to my ear, and I could feel the space between their lips and my body as chills flowed throughout me.
She then whispered calmly:
This was all your fault.
