What do you do when you want to make newspaper plant pots but don't have one of those special tools? Learn to make them what what you have on hand. In this piece you'll learn how to make biodegradable plant pots using just newspaper and a few things you already have in the house. No need to invest in a pot maker.
I introduce two ways to make them. The first is a round type that takes less than 30 seconds. The second is a beautiful origami box style that will take a little longer. They stack together really nicely though.
I literally learned how to make these today so I'm certain that you'll be able to pick it up just as quickly. If you have any questions please leave them as a comment below.
Also, when choosing paper, use standard newspaper that's been printed in black and/or color ink. Both paper and ink are biodegradable. Avoid shiny paper.
These pots will last a few weeks before breaking down. When it's time to plant your seedlings out, you can pop the pot in the ground, newspaper and all.

I've tried both styles and I agree that the round ones are much more sturdy and quicker to make. Very good and precise video! Thanks for sharing.
I tried newspaper pots this season and they have worked out very well! The seedlings are growing well and it's easy enough to peak at the root growth and refold the paper. And then it all goes into the compost. I'm hooked. I love the different shapes and sizes you did. I'm going to expand my collection!
I have a little wooden dial and I love it to make my newspaper pots!

Thank you. I was wondering if they would last with some watering.
Thank you for the demo in making the paper pots and very excited for the tour of your home garden. God bless. :-)
Can't wait to see the tour of the back garden.🍃
With the round pots, you can flatten the botton by flipping the jar and reinserting it to crush the bottom flat.
Genius :)
Fantastic 👍 thank you. I was bit apprehensive about square ones but now I am more confident and going to try it right away. Thank you once again.
A very timely vlog, totally agree with the content.
Thank you so much sharing this very easy to follow tutorial! I’m excited to try making these with my 6-year old. 💗 🌱
I did some round ones like this last year and they worked pretty well.
I’ve been planning to make some papers pots today. Thanks for the demo.
You’ve demonstrated how to do this better than any other CZcams video! Wonderful video.
Thank you!
hi tanya...these newspaper seed starter pots are great...i remember making them in science class 'a million years ago'...ha ha ha...just wanted to let you know that i traveled to your area of the globe for a lovely 12 day vacation and just got back yesterday...i traveled to ireland, scotland and england... love..love..loved all the sites and waved to you when we flew over 'the Isle'...thank you for another wonderful video...
That's so sweet of you to think of me whilst on holiday! So pleased you enjoyed your stay in the British Isles :)
Dear friend first of nice garden and healthy seedlings. Nice way to make Newspaper pots for seedling by using Glass jar. Great. Like 233.
cool idea ... will have to give that a go. Thanks for sharing the instructions!
Thank you so much for all your videos. I really enjoy the garden diy ideas. So interesting and useful. Please keep them coming.
This was such a great video.. I have the same problem with not enough pots for my plants, but also don’t want to accumulate all the plastic either..thank you for sharing this! 🌱♥️
Happy plant pot making :)
Tanya another amazing tutorial, so sad about your tomatoes hopefully you're able to save them good luck!
Those kitties can be so feisty but I bet they love each other ❤️❤️😄😄🌻🌻
Great tutorial. Thanks.
A great and wonderful idea! Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure :)
Pre-water the compost in a tray so it's just damp when you add it to the newspaper.
Mine went mouldy in past due to the initial soak.
Good tip. Thank you.
Great explanation! Thank you!
I love this project. Thank you. I needed an idea to avoid buying more pots.-Shorn
This is great. Thank you!
One easier way is to use those small square boxes like the one in which soap or some cosmetic comes in, and glue newspaper to it and make it a little hard surface so it stays in place too. Hope this helps.
Absolutely brilliant thank you
The nasturtiums look amazing!
Hey, thanks alot for this video. I'm definitely trying it this year.
Great idea !
awesome guide, making a stack of square ones with my mum now for spring seedlings.
Cheers!
You're welcome!
Wow cool gonna try this
Thanks you this is exactly what I needed I’m going to use the jar method
Thank you!
Thank you...Wow this is cool. I think I better stick with the round 1.
going to be trying this method this season!
Great. Thank you 😊
Jar method looks great hi Louie xxx
Loving this :)) 💚✨💚
Thank you, I love the idea of recycling
So fun
Thank you ! 🤩
Thanks for this video. It helped me a lot
The square pots are dope
I like the jar method. 👍
Very good video . Thank you
THANK YOU for giving the proportions/dimensions for the square pots
Thanks 😊, I will use this for my seedlings ,love from india☺️
Great video Tanya, the round ones look the best bet but the square ones would be nice to make in pretty paper for filling for gifts. Shame about the tomatoes, hope they make it! Always a challenge growing!
The tomatoes are doing MUCH better. You'll see them in the next video :)
Thank U soooooooooo much, it's werry useful
Thank you for the ratio in making square pots👍
Thanks 😊
I just love how the cats are just fighting in the background
Absolutely love this, yes this is a real problem when growing, I use biodegradable pots from our pound/dollar shop, you get about 20 for 1 pound/dollar. They you can plant the pot, but this is so cool! Im going to show my children this :)
That’s a great price! Still, making newspaper pots can be really fun. Your kids will love it 💚
Good work
3:05 is where it starts
The leaves on my tomato plants went the same way as yours and I think it was because they were cold, then hot then cold. I’ve also taken a few of the leaves off, I may need to take some more. I hope they survive. The variety are Shirley. 😊
Fingers crossed
👌👌
Great video Tanya, do you have any advice on how best to water seedlings in newspaper pots, to stop the pots getting sodden and falling apart?
The round ones I've made are very durable under normal watering conditions. They're several layers thick which seems to be the trick. The square ones are doing okay too but are less sturdy.
I’m curious if your roots struggled to make it through the wadded up bottoms of the round pots. I am going to try this!
id tear the paper off, or atleast most of it before transplanting, it helps the roots to not have to work its way tru the paper
I love paper pots💕
I'm planning to put my seedlings in pots then on a capillory mat while I'm at work to keep them watered.
Is a paper pot going to last long like that?
Nice
SOME QUESTIONS? Do you also put the plants in the ground with the pots? And uh, what about the ink? I see more people putting paper and cartboard even with glu on it in the soil. What is your opinion about it? Greetings from the Netherlands.
Yes you can plant the pots directly in the ground with the plants. Just make sure the paper stays moist and the roots will break through. As for ink, the vast majority of newspaper ink is made with soy and is biodegradable. Some isn't though so it's worth checking with the newspaper -- sometimes they'll have the information printed inside. Avoid shiny papers though -- it isn't printed with suitable ink.
Do you water these from top or bottom? If bottom then does the paper stays together?
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I am going to try some myself and then if I can manage it, will add to my weekly blog whitewoodandlinen and link back to you. I hope you are happy with that!
You could use a tin can to roll the round ones, too, making it a bit safer for munchkins to do :)
Its really great! Also the jar technique didnt work for me because when I folded it in it just fell apart one side slipped away and it wasnt a circle
Can you give me some tips to water the plants having it in the paperwork......
mmm. I bet the Japanese have an Origami for this. Thank you for posting
I keep buying disposable peat pots. Why? This is perfect, plus I chose the size I need.
Hmmm...can you just plant the pot in the ground as the newspaper will disintegrate????
id tear the paper off, or atleast most of it before transplanting, it helps the roots to not have to work its way tru the paper
if your circle one's bottom doesn't stay put-put a dot of water-soluble glue on it to keep them in place and cut a slit to keep that side thingy in place
Ooh origami.
Which ones do you prefer?
Round :)
I always feel a bit guilty using the double solo cup method, but as much as I like the thought of newspaper pots I'm a little concerned that he pH from the paper and ink may be detrimental for certain plants. Low pH problems is the reason why paper peat pots have sadly all but gone away. Also, mold can be a problem and newspaper is a GREAT substrate for mold growth.
could just make a paper mache version (dipping it in water and hydrogen peroxide). This will kill off any mold and you can leach out the ink leaving a wood pulp only. More time consuming but could actually be pressed into pots that can last multi seasons or broken down if buried and fully saturated before hand.
How can you water these pots as water will tear away the newspaper? How do you manage? Please explain...
They hold long enough despite being wet. Try making and using them and you’ll see.
Does the water not soak when poured?
It holds together for long enough. Try and see!
I'd put each one in a cheap baggie... I don't think they will hold up too well and leak everywhere. then re use the baggie next year...

Hi, I hear some accents and I would like to know if you're from Ireland, Scotland, or Welsh.
At about 2:36 there is a brutal fight in the background of this video. Thoughts and prayers.
Lol! Louis didn’t know what hit him 😂
@@Lovelygreens that wasn't a fight. just a couple of cats greeting. btw : great tutorial. I've been buying dollar store plasting cups to make seedling pots. paper is so much better.
Exactly the way how a journalist would describe the situation :D
🙃🙂👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏❤
My local newspaper does not use soy based inks, so I can't use the newspaper in the garden. They use petroleum based inks. :(
Time to prompt them into the 21st century! ;) Use other newspapers? Have a dig around the local paper recycling bin for national and international papers.
Elizabeth Myers Maybe use normal thin paper? Ricepaper on a roll isn’t that expensive and it can take a lot of water...:) Less expensive as pottery, much more eco friendly as plastics...:)
AYEEEE ZERO WASTE!
You say Pots like you're from Australia but you sound American?
🤮😠😡
Showing on youtube how to make paper pots as you just learned on youtube - without attributing the source of course - internet galore...
Thank you for sharing these easy methods.
My concern with using newspaper is the inks that are used. Do they not get absorbed by the seedlings/plants as they grow. Not so much an issue with flowers but could trace elements of the ink show up in the vegetables?
Modern newspaper inks are made of soy! They're perfectly fine to use in the garden 👌
