  • Filipinos are talented and many people from all over the world can attest to that. A lot of times we don’t even realize it and we don’t give ourselves credit until we get validation from foreigners. So, what are the things that Pinoys excel in? Let’s discuss with our favorite Filipino-Korean Couple and let us know also what your thoughts are on the topic!

People excel in what they practice. The reason why there are so many "talented" singers in the Philippines is that singing is encouraged and nurtured even outside of formal training. And this is why I say we don't love karaoke, but rather karaoke is a byproduct of our love for singing. Karaoke is relatively cheap and provides an instant platform for vocalists to do what they love doing. Those hours on the karaoke and singing during inuman sessions, are practice. So, while the techniques are not refined, the strength, stamina and control are far more developed compared to other non-formally trained vocalists. The rate of progress depends on the individual's natural talent and the effort they commit to practicing.
This can also explain why we seem to excel in solo sports. It's hard to develop a well-performing group in the absence of a structured, organized, training program. So athletes excel with the mentality of sariling kayod (on your own hard work). We can all agree that sports are resource-intensive. But notice that most sports that we excel in are on the less resource-intesive side e.g. boxing, billiards (available in most kantos/barrangays), weight lifting. Bowling and golf are rich-people sports in the Philippines, and most likely, the athletes excelling in these areas excelled by engaging in training programs and acquiring their equipment out of pocket or by getting private donations.
An example of a group sport that Filipinos naturally excel but we don't have an established name in is speak takraw. Most local takraw players have natural aptitude and mental fortitude for the sport, but it's hard to maintain a team when our athletes are most likely under-compensated and cannot attend the big tournaments usually hosted outside of the country as the sport is only popular in paper not in practice in the country. What is called our national sport is actually a niche sport that receives very little support or patronage. Whenever we perform well in this sport during the Asian or SEA games, it's a good bet that the players pulled themselves up by their bootstraps - making do with what equipment they had. Our first Olympic gold medal in weight-lifting (another solo sport) achieved through grit, determination, and make-do equipment is the same story. Same thing with Pacquiao and Efren. And because the success we've seen in these sports is borne from the athletes' individual mental grit and determination, there is no guarantee the Philippines will see its name at the top again once these names retire.
The same things can be said about singers, dancers and illustrators. Most will practice singing, dancing, or drawing on their own with make-do equipment creating notable talents, but reaching short of being a polished, marketable product capable of impacting/creating an economy.
TLDR Philippines lacks the infrastructure to develop talents into polished products that are competitive and sustainable.

Mr. Kim is on point with our athletes. When it comes to team sports di tayo masyadong nage-excel.

In my opinion, one of the reasons we excel in performing arts or in sports is because of the "environment." Yes, it's a given that we have raw talents and we're gifted,, but in reality, we need to consider that we are used to"harsh" or a not so good environment (There's pros and cons). Take, for example, using junk karaokes, faulted mic or playing billiards where there are a lot of nuisances like noise, uneven flooring, and worn out pooll table, once you are put in a place with a perfect set-up, you will surely excel and it will be easy. In singing for example, our singers are already great performers with just having a good set-up, but if you put them in the international stage which have a way better set-up, they will surely perform exceptionally and with ease. That's the reason why when athletes or singers experience a better stage, what they always say is that if only we have this we will be even better and that's the sad part and worst it's also one of the reasons why we lose talents.

True. In sports, we only excel on solo sport (boxing, billiards, bowling and weightlifting). But not in a group sports. We dont have much discipline collectively. Our fave sports like basketball is being played in ISOLATION and bara bara system. Thus, we need a superstar calibre import to win.😢

I can see our performers like Bini going international if they have the resources and willing si ABSCBN to throw money for them to do what KPOP does. Athlete wise, We excel in individual sports pero we can also excel in team sports like football and other sports pero we are a basketball country kaya di nabibigyan ng focus yung other sports and also sa basketball naman we lack proper training, strategies (ahem coach chot) and height. Sad lang na we can excel in certain industry like entertainment and sports pero problem lang talaga kulang tayo sa resources and the govt aren't wiling shellout para mag excel tayo unlike other countries.

Nice observation about solo play. I think nakuha natin yun dahil sa we need ro strive personally. Dahil nga wala naman kasing available access for training meron man pero may need gumastos just to create a group. But now due to social media marami ng collaboration. Na accept na natin yung we need other strengths and ideas.

Coach Tab Baldwin already started having that system in PH basketball at international level. Pero sadly, natigil. I just wish Coach Tim Cone would be able to continue building that system.
Honestly, Filipinos have talents in basketball, it is just there are forces outside of basketball which make the team bad.
