Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is the latest addition to the Survival genre, and like all survival games comes with unique learning curves. Hello my name is Midgeman, A content creator who normally specializes in Strategy games but TODAY I dug too deeply so you don’t have to. At the time of writing this I have around 26 hours in the game and Here’s 5 things I wish I knew before braving the long dark and delving into the ancient halls beneath the Misty Mountains. Be warned, there may be some visual spoilers for areas in the game in this video.

Black diamonds are not limited
They are rare drop from ground (not wall) rocks in darkest deeps, and they do respawn
I haven't had any of my resources respawn yet,
And yes black diamonds are renewable from mobs, but I had a 15 hour dry spell at the time of recording, with 5 dwarves finding absolutely none
Got to the stairs myself last night and was wondering where to get more black diamonds as ive looked everywhere so far and came across this method on reddit. In about 10 minutes i got 20 plus black diamonds and each time i went back to main base and slept the nodes respawned making it so i only had to go down one of the crevasse. Now when i get on again i be ready to move forwards!
@@Masterofthechickens I Can confirm this method work.
I have a map stone in one of these caves, so when I need more black diamonds, I just take a few trip there. Btw. It’s always the same rocks that gives black diamonds, so just go for that, map out and back again and it has respawned. Each rock gives around 3-4 black diamonds.
Glad someone else corrected him on the black diamonds …….. if you struggle in the deep caves you should make sure you grab a mug of evening ale to get the spirited buff then sleep if your lucky you’ll wake up with the buff that makes you immune to the despair in the deep caves
@@badboy70460 or You can sing at dwarf lamp to get it as well.
Would you like to see more Return to Moria content?
they buffed black diamond drops.
Can we get some solo friendly tips? Maybe some base locations that are easily defended or do not require defending
Yes
My Top 5:
1.) Noise and light attract Orcs until you defeat the boss in that zone, which then disables the noise mechanic. Don't do this too early as horde battels can yield MANY rare resources you need like black diamonds or Gundabad slag.
2.) Looting a black diamond early allows you to rebuild a early mapstone that you can then deconstruct for 3 black diamonds and move it to more helpful location. Don't deconstruct the Mine Hoist mapstone as that might be the only way back up to westgate until a long time.
3.) Deconstructing abandoned camps after rebuilding them can yield some extra iron, coal, and stone early to allow you to move faster though the early levels.
4.) Ironwood can also be gained by rebuilding large brew tanks and king brew tanks after you get the hammer to rebuild yielding 40-100 ironwood for each one you deconstruct. All you need i some steel and 10 Ironwood to rebuild the medium sized brew tanks and you will get 40 back when you deconstruct them.
5.) Miruvor is the best brew, turns the gam almost into sandbox mode as soon as you learn it drink it.
I’ve noticed when fighting the horde invasion, they drop black diamonds.
An easy cheesy way to get more diamonds as long as you have at least one is to log out with one diamond and a steel hammer or better in your inventory. Make a new world and speed run to the 1st camp, repair the map stone, dismantle it, and you've turned 1 diamond into 3!
in my experience as solo and group of 3 players - those tips are great - black diamonds are farmable on your world - in crystal depths in those mining shafts - if you farm those destructable small rocks and not veins - you have a cnahce to have ther e2-6 black diamond from one shaft. also farming is super nececery, after the patch where they reduce healing of some items from oven - so you need to farm and collect all the bat droppling you can. cause healing conumables are super expensive for mutliplayer. even solo player can stugle a bit especially if you brew more then one ale. Really enjoy this video. probably 1 one it was really well done
So, a few edits to this that I might suggest.
- Black Diamonds can be mined in the Deep Dark regions after Durin's Forge. The veins will say precious gems.
- Ironwood can be gained from literally any wooden object that takes more than one swing of an axe to break once you have the enchantment. It is not just mushroom trees. Elven trees can drop it, orc palisades can drop it. All that is required is that the object drops wood and takes multiple hits. Additionally, if you cut down a tree with one swing it will NOT drop ironwood even with the enchantment.
- Unless there is a bug in my games, trees do respawn eventually
- The story end weapon is a masterwork and it's so annoying
The Axe upgrade is brilliant
Two that are so helpful. The ironwood tip helps me to see what the wood that comes from the mushrooms looks like. I don't need ironwood yet, but I just made the lower level to look for wood from mushrooms. Also, I play with my husband. I think you were saying that if I played single player with that character, that I could transfer resources to our multi=player game? I'm going to check that out right now. Thanks so much for your tips.
Another note just my opinion but all the orc camps in the Elven Quarter should be made out of Elven wood.. period.. that would greatly reduce possibly even eradicate the Elven wood issue.. it's so bad that if you have 3 or 4 people and everyone wants just a full stack of bolts that will likely eliminate every tree in the entire area. For my playthrough with my 3 friends 2 of us went on our own worlds and farmed every tree so we would have enough wood.
I agree on this, it would make a lot of sense
I hope that the devs will add worldoptions to customise you'r world. I would love to have an option for respawn of resources or mor enemys and so on. I love this game so much and i think, they coul'd do alot more stuff with this game.
I feel like a sandbox / world option would really elevate the game
In the dwarf city if you run through the buildings look at the wood pallets some are elven wood and ironwood this has helped me tons
Here's some I've noticed no one else has mentioned:
-You can use your hammer to fix the abandoned buildings. Just equip it instead of a weapon. This will help prevent orcs from destroying your base out from under you. Just take some time to fix everything up and do some occasional maintenance after being attacked if you plan on staying there long.
-Don't forget to carry plenty of the various stones. Not only is it useful for setting up a hearth and campsite wherever, you'll need it to fix the statues which will give you recipes for better weapons and armor.
-When you reach the Eastern Bastion, build a big basecamp on top of the armory (use the decorative pillars for support). Not only is there plenty of space for a multi-story base (necessary for the larger build items) and sunlight for farming but it will give you access to all the already built weapon racks and armor stands of the armory without you needing to build them yourself. Just block off the armory to act as a secondary defense (not that you'll need it). Make sure you build above the armory and not at the bottom. The bottom has a drake that continually respawns (whether on purpose or due to a glitch, I don't know) outside an outpost of Balin's. Fixing the outpost hearth up will act as a distraction for any orcs and the drake will attack them back. Very few orcs, if any, will make it to the top of the stairs much less your actual camp if you build it above the armory and you can farm the otherwise dangerously difficult to obtain scales dropped by the drake after the siege ends.
PRICELESS VIDEO! Some of this I figured out, but other things I didn't know.
BTW this video caused me to become a new subscriber and before saying I would like a master work video I decided to check and see if you had already done one. Seeing that it doesn't appear to have been made one yet, yes I would enjoy such a video.
Yes to the MasterWork items!
Will consider it!
Just as a headsup that almost anything minable, including black diamonds, do respawn every day in the Deepest Dark! Happy mining! :)
You can easy farm black diamonds. Go to The darkest deep, there are two stones wich are dropping black diamonds. Build a fire and a travelstone. Everytime you Travel down, you can farm 2 diamonds. I got 20 diamonds in about 20 minutes.
I'd say #3 is useless just carry the materials for a Mapgate... build a simple portal and go back to base, eat sleep etc.. and then pick up where you left off. You can eve use this method to avoid hordes altogether as sleeping will reset the noise meter.
As for the iron wood if you focus on the larger trees with the ax and have the gem on it then you are almost guaranteed a drop. It's probably closer to 90%.
Good video. :) cheers.
Thankyou! Also some sound advice there!
I have 90+ black diamonds solely from killing orcs in Dwarrowdelf and Barazimbar. You can farm them when a horde hits, but I prefer dragging out a boss fight by focusing on the adds until I feel like enough materials have dropped.
Honestly, I think it was a problem with an older build / hordes not spawning etc
2:00 Did you not get that glitch that spawn ressources where group of tree should be, after clearing the Elven quarter of trre, i often spot scrap wood or elven wood on the ground for some reason
3:00 It's really good way to farm early weak horde with endgame gears/weapons
Bear spawns also have wood lying on the ground if the trees are close. Trees seems to regrow pretty fast around them.
black diamonds can be found in the gem cave is deepest depts with teh nameless ones i got 29 black diamonds fom one and we had 2 f these caves the other cave i found 41 black diamond sin.. on top of the orc camps and bosses you should have plenty.. build meby 3-4 tps on each "world" and you are fine we built one and removed it every time we got full inventory. get back to main base empty out get new food and buffs and go back, one back remove the stuff and move on. if you feel like all of you are close to dying. run away and build up a tp and go on with the fight
God i wanted to mount that keg to something. Same with the torch, i don't like mess, i probably if it were possible would've put my old backpack on an armor rack or wall rack though
Keg storage rack when?!
cant you get the black diamonds in the creveces in the deepest part of the deepest dark. like down in the cracks. after beating the monster the wall rocks re spawn
Resources not being at all renewable is a hilarious oversight by the game devs. Like c'mon, you're supposed to make resources either so abundant that they're functionally infinite, or farmable from mob drops or something and so therefore legitimately infinite. *Especially* in a multiplayer game.
It's a little frustrating, but with enough planning as players you can get around it
@@Midgeman Yeah- if you *know about it*. If you don't know about it, you can soft-lock yourself out of progression.
elven wood is the only one that is super limited
@@1981troyboy If you use the build-up strike (forget the name of it) with your axe on the trees in the Elven Quarter you can cut them down and get the wood.
@@1981troyboyAre you cutting down the trees in the Elven Quarter? The second teir pick works the best unless you use an Axe as the reply below states.
I have not experienced the shortage of black diamonds, As we know they do only drop as rare drops from orcs and from their encampments. You will also be able to get some by going to " Darkest Deeps" by killing a nameless thing i do not know if its 100% drop but i have gotten many from there, How to get there is by climbing down that crack that you will find in some rooms. Remember to take much food with you both in singleplayer and multiplayer cuz you will start to take damage from despair.
I have found that, so far, if I am wearing the "mining hat" I don't suffer from despair in the dark. That may change at the deeper/lower levels of the game?
@@cherrydragon2024 i think the mining helm wont remove despair down in the darkest deeps but might be wrong i could test it out.
Black Diamonds are not limited they are actually unlimited. They are drop by the orcs during the horde attacks.
You just need to trigger a horde attack.
Which is easy don't clean the CORE on one area and let them respawn go around make some noise and there you go, unlimited Black Diamonds.
Make sure not too ALL party die or the attack will end.
By the way base everywhere is so much work.
Just use Map stone to teleport to main base where everything is.
Maybe take 5 iron bar to build a repair next to it. and that's it.
you can also revive someone while holding block or charging your weapon to skip the revive animation
Woah really?
Is there specific furniture type that drops ironwood, I recently got to the area and busted up some stuff but haven't found any yet.
It's mostly the bars, beds and tables
@@Midgeman Awesome, thanks man.
black diamonds can be farmed in the deeps where u can go into the crack in ground
I've heard this, but it's very dangerous down there - so my advice to ration them until later in the game is still valid
I really wanted to like this game. It's right up my alley. The problem for me was CONSTANT orc attacks and backtracking through every area, every time I played. It felt like a slog.
You are in Moria, what did you expect?😢 Orcs, orcs everywhere!
The patch seemed to help as I notice a huge drop in patrols and camp seiges. Especially in the Elven Quarter where it seemed the wolves were getting busy as patrols were no stop.
It calmed around the midgame for me, then picked up again. I need to hop back into moria for sure
Looks like Orcs Must Die but LOTR style!!! I like!
Orcs must die works as a statement for LOTR too
Does it run on the gt 650m 1gb?
Nr 3 isn't really a thing. You can take your geared up dwarf from your sp world to a mp world. Incl inventory.
I have the Quarrymaster and it won't let me mine gold. Did they update this?
My group had this problem. It may be something they fixed in an update. The only other explanation would be that we all accidentally used our old pickaxe instead of using the masterwork pickaxe because it’s set to the masterworks key and we forgot? But I think it was just a bug. Works now at least.
cheers, good vid
please help, I have a problem, my aim in the game is not level, I can not adequately put any buildings because everything is at a slight angle
Thats... Strange - ive no idea
i've killed all the mobs on the floor and cant get more black diamonds for stairs repair. so, artmoney is my choice. rly, i dont wanna grind a ground or restart a game cuz of it
nice
Black diamonds aren't a limited resource. They are in the Darkest Deeps in respawnable nodes on the ground.
Honestly, when making this video we hadn't been able to explore down there that much
Make troll follow you into the Sun light and they will turn into stone
I did this too, so fun
You have no need to build some new buildings at all. Walls and crafts, farming - that's all you need.
By the Gates of Moria
Will this game be playble on Xbox one
Not sure sorry! Id check the developers website!
Tip 6: the boss dragon is fucking awful at being a boss so dont overthink the fight lol
The short day/night cycles and the lack of resources almost are enough for me to quit altogether.
It's almost a good game. i hope it gets badly needed updates soon. I will slog on.
I read The Hobbit when I was 7. Early Middle Earth addiction is why I press on.
Is it coming to ps4?
Not sure!
How to distructure anything on Rog Ally, anyone help please.
Need some help in the art of destruction, huh? SOMEBODY HELP THIS PERSON!
@@Midgeman so far PC I know how to Distructure on PC but on Ally I am having issue.
Ally?
@@Midgeman Asus ROG Ally. Habdheld PC.

Oh nice, do you know how much?
@@Midgeman I got it for $17.
Awesome!
@@Midgeman guess it would be half that in usd.
Elvish wood is not limited, every X amount of time the trees reappear
I still havent seen this myself. It could be the fact our save was a day one save
Yeah after getting durins axe the quarrymaster is useless
I HATE that the wood is so scarce. I mean, it takes 10! TEN! 10 for 15 arrows or bolts. That's absurd. Makes me not want to use crossbows or bows. The game is fun, but some things just kind of kill the fun. Like, I would love to restore the glory of all those beautiful buildings. Yeah, I know, its not the point of the game, but it would still be fun to do so. But yeah, why aren't Elven trees enchanted/magical, and just grow back after a few days? Plus, I like for games to be visually beautiful/interesting. This game is. But I have to destroy everything to get what I need. I don't mind the ores, and the trash we pick up. But I hate cutting all the trees down, and I hate destroying all the buildings.
Oh, and your building that the Orcs destroyed? Did you know you can repair them? I noticed they were not repaired when the Orcs destroyed it. Many of the structures are literally one or two hits from being destroyed. Hammers will repair them to 100%. Still not that strong, however, because while they look like granite, and or, adamant, it's actually just stone. So it's best to put a wall of granite or adamant in front of the building. Maybe two walls, if it's not just a simple outpost. I have two walls at my main based. It's in the forge in the Elven Quarter. So it's mostly non-destructable, and I have 2 doors and 2 sets of walls at each of the three entrances into the forge. All granite, which seems to be enough, but I have enough adamant and ironwood, so I will change it soon. Best thing is it's easy to go to all three doors to fight the sieges. I did have a troll join some Orcs to siege, but it stepped into the light and turned to stone. I used my Quarrymaster to make quick work of it after the siege ended. Makes me wonder about the sun lamps as a quick defense the next time a troll joins a siege.
I agree with everything you said here :P
😈Still like the thought of multiplayer lore being we take and doom other worlds to supplement the main world.
There can only be one Moria in this Multiverse
The game is good but on playstation you cant join other worlds, we tried so many times now .... gonna refund the game tho
i broke the 420 likes i have to roll one for that reason to apologize
We shall solemnly smoke Sweet Galenas in honor of our fallen number
black diamonds are not limited. They're just rare to find
Very true, they do technically drop from Orc Hordes, Orc Chests and can be mined in the deep dark, that being said. With how rarely theyve been dropping (for our playthrough), it's more advice just to be wary as to not use them all, and get stuck unable to climb Khazard dum without having to axe your map stones 🤣
@@Midgeman im end game and sitting on 60 of them the only thing super limited it elven wood. i chopped down every tree thinking they would grow back. nope.
Epic game exclusive. No thanks.
I normally don't touch epic, but I had to for this
Not sure about steam but its coming to consoles next year
Non renewable resource is just piss poor game design. It should be renewable in some fashion. No reason that deforesting the entire elven quarter is the only viable non rng way to get the resource.
yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh kinda sucky imo
Sounds like more of a pain in the a$$, than ANY kind of fun...
GL with all ... "that"
Best tip?
