My Grandpa was a farmer born n raised in el barrio La Loma in Barranquitas, P R, and tabacco was the no 1 bread maker , second was cattle, plantains, bananas, yautia, malanga, batata. I got to sew tabaco, 3 thousand, 1 yard cotton strings, that later were taken to the big rancho to be hang to dry. It was fun to be among the most elder woman of the barrio, sewing tabacco, telling stories, singing or cracking jokes , drinking coffee or chocolate with crackers or bread. I remember no one liked to sew the "boliche" the small leaves..and the tabaco worms were huuuge, my uncle used to pick them up and throw it to the chickens... the fight for it reminded me of a football game, one chicken pick it up and ran while the rest followed her trying to take it away... fun times, awesome memories from my childhood in my native barrio, La Loma in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, USA.

Truly AWESOME!!!! My oldest aunt lived to be 103 in Barranquitas. Their mountainous farm had a waterfall and the water led to a steam down the mountain. All of their offspring's still live their today with houses spread throughout their mountain. I was told stories of my mother washing clothing against the rocks when she spend sometime with them. She was the youngest of 17 children. I visited Barranquitas three years ago ( in my 60s) for a celebration of life of my Aunt. My cousins in their 80s will tell me stories of them working the farm land for days. They still looked very healthy and strong. They slept on the ground on top of the mountain farm land and come down to their home at the bottom of the mountain to shower and eat a fresh meal- to do it again. Their produces was sold to the city. I heard wonderful folk music played with their 6 string guitars and quiro. Those were the days of hard working Puerto Ricans families. I watched our third generation of cousins age 15-19 years with their heads stuck to their phones and listening to their own music. They have no clue as to what got the family to the easy life they have today. Un gran abrazo a todos los jibaros y sus familias who made Puerto Rico what it is today. I am honored by their hard work. THANK YOU FOR SUCH A WONDERFUL VIDEO.

I lived in La Vega Barranqitas from 1960 -1965 my family moved to NY when I was 12, I remember the girls at the school I attended, Luis Munoz Rivera, close to el Cortijo, were really beautiful. I didn’t like N. Y at all, it was like leaving paradise to go to a crowded dirty city. I have my best memories of PR in Barranquitas, God bless the people of PR

When I was a child I do remember the Tobacco plantations, I lived in Helechal and remember going to La Vega "semillero" to get the tobacco plants, although my father was a teacher, he loved agriculture and used to grow also tobacco. My 'uncle Tio Suso was a 100% farmer and we helped him with tobaco and other crops like beans, cabbage and coffee... wow what memories! I wish I had pictures of those days. Seems to me that the plantations in this video are in Quebradillas/Barrancas/Quebrada
    Grande and Honduras(La Loma)
