That one trick with using the soft-clipping section of Elysia's Alpha Master to chop peaks down and increase headroom, without altering the timbre, from that "Loudness is NOT In Mastering" was like magic, tho! Saved my mixes and masters, actually.

its interesting how much harmonics (possible aliasing) EAM's clipper creates

    Yeahh. Thanks David
Now I always use clipper or tape sat for drums. To calm the peak and to enhance the body

Clippers: Pushing the sound to a point where it starts distorting, creating a square-ish wave of sound, making it sound more agressive, most of the time used in small amounts so unpleasant distortion is not heard(soft clipping).
Compressors: Reducing the peak of the sound(loudest parts) to bring them closer to the average loudness of the sound, allowing you to boost the whole sound to become louder.
*Example* : Guitar recording is usually around -4db but at times jumps to -0.4db, compress the sound to make the loudest peak be -1.4db and now you can add 1.4db of volume before it starts clipping/distorting, instead of only 0.4db previously. How much a sound is compressed and what peaks are tamed depends on treshold, ratio, attack, release etc.

Actually soft clipping is more audible then hard clipping. Jussayin'. And the description of the compressor is just one function of the many

@@mixbustv How can soft clipping be more audible, it definitely doesn't sound as distorted as hard clipping, that's why it's called "soft".

@@asd2640 IMHO David is referring to the fact that soft clippers have a lower threshold compared to hard clippers and therefore act on a bigger portion of the program, while hard clippers will only catch the highest peaks, that usually are very short and therefore the process will be more transparent.
An example would be a track where snare and kick are peaking slightly above the 808, a hard clipper will only work on the transients of the kick and snare while a soft clipper will also grab the 808 changing its tone, which would be more audible.

@@kelainefes i thought da threshold of soft/hard clippers was the otha way around :o
Can’t U do da same trick wit a Limiter?

    • @asd2640
      @asd2640 Před 2 lety

How does a soft clipper have a lower threshold, when I have a soft clipper that has a threshold control that ranges from -51.8 to 0db? The example you gave doesn't really make sense, because what sounds are affected depends on the threshold. I thought every plugin or piece of hardware will change the sound depending on the settings that you use, you don't apply compression with a plugin called "compression", you use a compressor and tweak the settings, a compressor can also do the exact opposite, it can expand, a limiter can also be used to compress things.
It changes the sound depending on how you set it up, it doesn't just automatically affect everything from 0 to
-infinity db, it's supposed to have threshold settings. So I don't understand what you're saying.
By the way I'm talking about digital audio not analog, I don't know much about analog gear and how it works...

Also clippers tend to add wayyyyy more THD than compressors.

I just started hearing the difference a few days ago. I think of it like a comp can shape the transient and a clipper can cut it.
