This Is Why It Took Me 3 Years To Grow Cucumbers Into Shapes

  • 3 years ago, I started an epic journey with a cucumber. I planted its seeds, watched my homegrown cucumbers pop up, and then, I turned them into wild shapes. I’m here to tell you about this wild cucumber ride, so buckle up, and let’s start the engine.
    🥒
A few interesting facts, though, that you’ll learn in this video before we turn that engine on…
    1. Grocery store cucumbers are often harvested from the plant early where the seeds are less developed and might not have matured fully. In order for the actual seeds to grow, the cucumbers need to be left on the plant for a longer period of time. But you have to be careful, because if you leave the cucumbers growing on the vine for too long, they turn yellow, which usually indicates that the cucumber is overripe and may be past its prime for eating.
    2. When you leave a cucumber on a vine too long, it turns yellow, and although it may not be good for eating, it usually is a sign that the seeds are ready to go, big and phat, viable for growing, and can be planted in soil to grow your own cuces at home.
    3. Cucumber seeds can also be dried out and saved for at least three years.
    4. Cucumbers from the grocery store are all about appearance, so although they may look perfect, the seeds might have been treated with chemicals that can reduce their ability to germinate.
    5. You cannot just plant grocery store cucumbers because their young, immature seeds will not be viable to grow in soil. The seeds need to be stronger, hence leaving the cucumber to turn yellow cucumber on the plant.
    6. You cannot grow a cucumber without the male and female flowers pollinating each other. Male flowers make pollen - this sticky, sweet tasting liquid inside of the yellow flower, and the female flowers have a little cucumber baby behind them. The buzzing bees and fluttering butterflies come to visit, and they accidentally share pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers, while also eating some of the yummy nectar to fill their bellies. This teamwork is like magic because it helps the cucumbers grow big and strong. Again, without the males pollinating the females, the cucumbers don’t grow.
    7. You can add some vermiculite and perlite to your soil, which helps to aid in aeration and allows the soil to breathe better.
    8. Powdery mildew can be removed by spraying a concoction of baking soda, oil, dish soap (all diluted with water) and spraying your leaves once a day for one week. You can additionally use a separate mixture of kelp diluted in water and spray after you spray the first mixture. Your mildew will be gone within a week.
Thank you soooo much for watching. I spend a lot of time editing and creating my long videos for you, and nothing makes me happier than having you watch my videos and my planting journey. So thank you so much for spending the time here on my channel. It means the world to me and Raffi. I love you.

Cucumber is one of the plants I grow almost every year. I like the bush cucumbers the most, probably. They aren't supposed to make a huge plant... but do anyway. But the flavor is nice! The vines always end up taking over the deck and helping turn it into a jungle.
This year, wild pursane took over my pot and suppressed the cucumber seeds! I had to clear it all out and start over, but it's going great so far. Lots of flowers and bebe cucs ❤

Do you have the name of the variety? The issue I have is they take up too much space and tend to bolt

Milk is a good remedy for powdery mildew. I use powder milk and water. Also letting a cucumber turn yellow will stop the plants production of future cucumbers.
