** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

As a company, Koval gets my respect. During the COVID 19 pandemic, they've converted their factory to use their alcohol to make hand sanitizers. Bravo!
Koval also make an amazing 100% millet whisky that is really worth trying. It has a very unique flavour, softness and smoothness that I haven't found in any other whisky I've tried. I highly recommend it.
It's a late comment, but I just received the Bourbon version as a gift and was pleasantly surprised with the taste like you guys. I looked it up, they use Millet (Asian grain) instead of rye in the mash bill, which gives it somewhat unique character. And yes indeed, it won a Gold award at 2014 International Whiskey Competition.
I’ve watched all of your videos, and you two consistently make me feel like a special and rare beast. Every time you say not to start with complex and smokey whiskeys, I smile proudly to myself. My favorite whiskeys, by a huge margin, have been Laphroaig 10, Talisker 10, Caol Isla 12, and Lagavulin 16.
you are a rare and mythical creature. If I captured you, I would get to come up with your latin name to enter into the history books.
Koval... I just happened to taste a 18 years single grain scotch from Loch Lomond aged in Koval Bourbon barrel bottled by Murray McDavid and it was MAGNIFICENT!
K so whiskey story time.
Last week was my Spring Break, and while it wasn’t meant to be a whiskey-exploring (and mooching) trip, it definitely became one. We decided to visit my sister in Denver and some extended family in LA (we live close to Denver so we flew out of/into Denver International Airport). While in Denver, we went out for drinks and I got to try a barrel-aged Manhattan, made with Woody Creek rye. My sister said she lived near a distillery (Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey), so we booked a tour of it for the next weekend, when we would be coming back through. I was pretty excited about that, but I wasn’t prepared for what was in store for me there. The family we were staying with in LA is on my wife’s side of the family so I hadn’t met all of them yet. Upon my arrival, I discovered that the man of the house is a whiskey man too, with the means of actually purchasing high-end whiskeys (unlike myself; I’m in my last semester of college). The first night I had a Manhattan at a restaurant and he made me three old fashioneds when we got home (with Bulleit bourbon, which I know isn’t fancy but they were some damn good drinks and he used some cherries that I’m pretty sure cost more than the bourbon). At first I thought he had made it with Pappy, because the glass had Rip Van Winkle engraved in the side and through some conversation, I discovered that they had a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle at the house. I then made it my sole mission to channel the eagle and mooch some of that elusive, sweet nectar. The next night, he actually showed me some of his whiskey collection, where I noticed a number of names I’ve come to recognize as a result of watching this channel. However, I wasn’t in a position to ask for specific bottles, so I just took what he gave me. He first poured me a glass of Auchentoshan Three Wood, which I found incredibly smooth. He then poured me a glass of Glendronach single cask (I’m uncertain of the year). That was arguably the most challenging scotch I’ve ever had, with some slightly salty and funky cheese notes. Unfortunately, I never got that glass of Pappy, but it was still a good time. When we got back to Denver, we went on our distillery tour of Stranahan’s, where we got to try a glass of their regular whiskey and a glass of their Diamond Peak. My wife doesn’t really like alcohol that tastes like alcohol, so I got double the whiskey. In addition, we got 4 free glasses with the Stranahan logo that look exactly like Glencairns but without the base. All in all, it was a good trip for a budding whiskey lover to discover (and mooch) some delicious goodness.
I wish you success in your future endeavors such that one day you may afford a very expensive whisky and can chat about it with this man and then not share it with him as revenge.
Eagle Force I was a little bummed, but I still got to mooch so 🤷🏻♂️ someday I’ll be able to afford them.
Wow! Great whiskey adventure! You keep trying and you’ll eventually get in good with and solid with whiskey pappy. Next time you are in Denver, try to make it to A.D. Law Distilling which is only five or ten minutes south of Stranahans (Google them). There are 90 distilleries in Colorado so you might want to make plans to visit on a frequent basis. 🥃🥃🥃
Eric Schwab will do, thanks for the recommendation!
Take a shot for every time Daniel says Heart-cut. You are now dead.
Hey Daniel and Rex,
I'm an eighteen-year-old kid from the Netherlands. I really like your video's (so keep it up guys). Before I took a look at your channel I didn't know a damn thing about whisk(e)y but you guys inspired me to buy my first bottle of scotch (glenfiddich 12 beware the dutch legal drinking age is 18). It took me a few months to start to really like it but I got there. Now I'm learning more and more about different kinds of whisk(e)y. Especially now the restaurant I work for started to offer tasting activities. I'm the only one in the company with a little know-how about whisk(e)y so I guide the people through the whisk(e)ys. This is all because of you guys. I want to thank you for this so I want to send you a package of special craft beers that my province is known for (we don't make any type of hard liquor so this is the next best thing). Where can I find an address so I can send you some stuff with a personal letter?
With love (No homo)
Max
This is so cool, Max. Glad we could contribute in some way!
austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-donations/
Did you hear about the restaurant on the moon?
Great food, no atmosphere
Just watched one of the early episodes (peat monster) when Rex was as new. Wow. What a difference. Rex was downright polite and Daniel had free reign to to be circumlocutory. Rex=3rd gravitating body. Keep up the great work. Love seeing the evolution.
"when Rex was new" LOL!!!! Wanting to trade him in on a new model already?
He was more puppy like back then. It’s sad when the puppies grow up into insolent adult dogs that isn’t it?
the terms head, heart and tail come from a fish metaphor where head and tail are disposed, and the middle section is consumed....just sharing
I about died when Daniel was making the long toast and Rex was just like really?
I love Koval, tried it about 4 years ago, and bought the single barrel straight bourbon this weekend, and very pleased with the taste
The enunciation in this episode is phenomenal, especially with words that end in T
Few of us admit being from Illinois. My wife and I will be celebrating 30 years in 2020. Give us a toast!
Kent Buehrer Better to be from Illinois than Indiana, Brother! 🥃🥃🥃
I feel that those in "respectable industries" are more likely to quit and move into this area as they are probably more likely to have the capital to fund something they make not make a profit out of for a few years...if at all (as I'm sure you are aware 😂)
I don’t know how I stumbled across this channel but , y’all are hilarious!! And I have never had whiskey but now want to try them all!!
Welcome to the tribe!
You’ve just fallen into the pit with the rest of us.....we’ll make room! Lol
Eric Schwab
Yes! Move over!! 😜
Now I have to find something to start with that will fit my budget. I need a beginner that I can’t go wrong with..
Top 10 Whiskeys for Beginners [Crowdsourced From Whiskey Lovers]
czcams.com/video/PoeIPrIXUOw/video.html
I’m starting to notice that’s a favorite 😂
And the Angels envy... I think that’s what it’s called?
That intro was enough for a thumbs up. I'm new to this channel and i can't get enough.
Very interesting review for me- a year ago, I got the same sampler set (which probably tastes a little different, but the target tastes are probably the same). Even though I'm more a bourbon person, my order of these three were the 1) Rye, 2) Bourbon, and 3) Four Grain.
The notion of the earthiness was something I didn't note, but I do like that in red wine, a lot.
But it's nice to every once in a while have a "calibration" sampling, so that I can get an idea of your tastes vs. mine.
Those are absolutely gems those bottles. I have all three of them....marvelous....i am having so difficulty when taking a sip....it is almost a sin to take drink it.....
I like the Kovol Oat as well.
Yo, I toured Cook County Hospital in grad school! We spent the first part of the day at Rush University and Northwestern Women's hospital which were fucking palatial, and my favorite professor who wanted to show us the real shit said "Ok, now let's come back to earth" and we went to County hospital, and the Cook County Free Clinic across the street, which was the most acute presentation of our privilege I've ever experienced.
I see that Glenfiddich XX behind you, Daniel. Please review. Thank you.
simply delicious....
agreed
He did a quick one during the Advent calendar, but that stuff definitely deserves its own proper full episode.
yeah, I saw it, but it felt like it was a quick and dirty review. I agree it needs its own proper full episode.
The Project XX is superb and one of the best recent releases from Glenfiddich!
That mooch joke had me busting out laughing in public!
Great fun as always !! Hard core heart cut! Cheers guys 😊🥃!
Is it me or does Daniel only eat from the dried fruit section at Whole Foods or things from tins?!
Raymond Mota I’ve heard it rumored that he only likes imported tinned stuffed grape leaves from Crete and organic Turkish apricots.
Eric Schwab haha. 😂😂
Nice to see Rex letting Daniel drone on and on and on, and on
Daniel you must introduce Rex to the balcones rye they just came out with. I saw you were at the release party and seemed to enjoy it. I have a friend who works for balcones and I have gotten to try it and the stuff is magnificent and I feel will be right up the rye alley for Rex.
Great Bourbon. Happy to support them. Good show!!
its nice that Daniel likes the Bourban
i was just about to ask if you guys had checked out koval and lo and behold i stumble upon this...myself along with fellow tribe member patrick clark were in chicago for a music festival in may...we had breakfast with a friend of mine from high school and she asked if we had tried koval (the distillery is a few blocks from her house)...on a whim...patrick and i went to a grocery store next to where the festival was and they had the rye...took it back to the hotel later that night and thoroughly enjoyed it...slainte!!!
I can't emagine anyone using the tails in their whiskey. It common to blend some heads in to the whiskey because that is where most of the flavor is and most of the bite. Hearts alone is very smooth but less flavor than heads. The art is in the balancing the two
Just tried “the peat monster” off your guys’ review and I’m in love. My father in law tried it as well. He primarily drinks vodka. Does that have anything to do with why he enjoys the “harsher” whiskey?
Welcome to the Whiskey Vault !!!
Thank you Daniel and Rex for crazy content. Let's have more shenanigans, pretty please!
I love what you guys do. AMPed on Wildspark!
I would love to have you talk about their Oat and millet. I never heard of Oat or millet whisky until I heard of Koval.
I wanted to love this distillery, they make a great whiskey ... BUT, they use a rubber cork. The first dram off the bottle smells like nothing but rubber. You either let it breath for a long time, or give it a chance and bear through the first couple if rubbery drams for the treasure at the base of it.
Yes!! Thank you! I came to post the same. All you can taste is the plastic/rubber cap-stopper. It's a shame.
I think we would all like origin story of you guys over a review of course
you guys should review the nolan glass let us know if it is worth getting one
Banana oak sounds like an exotic plant.
Okay guys, April fools is coming up and I think you need to do something to Rex. Here's what I have in mind. Say someone sent in a whiskey amd present a bottle, mostly full. Make sure it's an obsolete thing Rex has never tried. Fill that bottle with fireball, and read the fake tasting notes the sender created. They should be something like "sweet, with just a nuisance of cinnamon". Let Rex take a whiff and see what he says.
It'll be great
Morgan Flynn Lol! Too bad it can’t also be a powerful laxative whiskey! Lol!
Could you recommend a few easily accessible Rye's, with the black liquorice note you mentioned (I know you're not a fan, but serve me humble bastards)? Many thanks, cheers!
I'm one of the few unicorns that's always liked black licorice, but I don't know if I'd appreciate it as a note in a whiskey.
Yo guys I’ve been in the tribe for a couple months now and only being 21 I’ve only been able to buy a couple of whiskeys but I started with Monkey Shoulder, Buffalo Trace and Laphroaig 10. I’ve loved all of them and Laphroaig is my favorite, but while watching this video, I paired a Subway double chocolate chip cookie with Buffalo Trace and this pairing blew my mind! If you do some pairing you should check it out! It was wild! Lol
This rye sounds like it may be good/interesting to use in cocktails.
very entertaining video guys, as always...!
Personally I like Koval wheat the best.
Nice cut at the opening Chad, saved us from that "song".
Just in case, "koval" in ukrainian ("коваль") means - "iron smith". So, it should be not bad fuel for an "ironman" & others "made of steel" guys. :)
Hey now Daniel! That "If anyone knew you at 15 and still wanted to marry you that's impressive" line was below the belt. I met my wife back when we were paired up on a project for class in 5th grade. It was not love at first sight.. she was a know it all that took over the entire project. And I was some shy kid that didn't help at all (was new to the class after moving in to the district). We started dating in 10th grade and got married after she finished her bachelor's degree... getting close to 14 years ago now.
I liked her just fine at 15. 10 on the other hand? Ugh. And I'm betting she'd say the same thing :p
hell yes. congratulations, and well done.
Lol! I think you were certainly meant to be together with a legacy like that. My wife and I have been married 20 years (feels like 20,000 years) and we get along just fine. Most people ask how she’s doing before asking how I’m doing. I think there’s a common belief amongst our friends that she’s going to snap one day. She says jokingly we are serving a life sentence together. I think she’s just hanging around to collect the insurance money after my death. Either way it’s all good! Lol! Seriously though, congratulations! 🥃
Congratulations! My wife and I work for the same company. The year before the ACA was passed our boss started offering life insurance. While we were in the meeting, she told everyone "I got everyone a basic life insurance policy too". I turned to my wife and said "Have I told you that I love you lately?" I think she keeps me around because we both are cyclists and I'm a trained cook. I feed her after rides :p
Fidasaind Wow, you’ve got more than average practical utility for your wife. You’ve got nothing to worry about. My wife doesn’t like my cooking because it’s far to spicy.......I guess I’m useful because I take care of the trash and recycling. I also replaced the toilet recently too.....she couldn’t have done that on her own. Yeah, I need a lot more things to be indispensable at before I’m safe😜!
You had all the Koval except the Oat, which I was curious about.
You guys seem to be focusing alot lately on craft/ local bourbon distilleries. Not saying i dont enjoy it, but maybe start throwing in some irish wiskey ( Bushmills single malts/ Teeling rum cask) or more available bourbon (town branch). BTW team biscuit.
That master distiller joke is still funny.
Master distiller joke is almost Dad joke territory.
I hope the explosions are not anywhere close to that expensive vault. . .
Personally, I use hearts, and chase tails.
Whistlepig trifecta
What is the most bourbon-like scotch and the most scotch-like bourbon? Please keep your selection relitivly available.
nicholasedel Dejavous! You asked this before didn’t you?
Good evening gents!
New to the Chanel and saw the Koval series, great whisky! From Chicago suburbs and sorry I did not send a bottle but you need to try FEW Bourbon out of Evanston. Would love to hear tour comments.
M. Saviano
Although I am a beginner I found it hard to believe that a whisky can smell like a CZcams vid. Even more baffling is that it smells like a specific episode!! Wow..
I have celiac and love whiskey can you review a corn based whiskey?
American Lumberjack urbantastebud.com/gluten-free-whiskey-list/
So when are we getting more blends "for the people"?
Lol @ the mooch comment joke! That’s like the feminist picnic where nobody brought any sandwiches. :p
My boyfriend looked over my shoulder as I was watching this video, saw only Rex on the screen, and said, "Is that Orlando Bloom?"
Catherine Powers Lol! Orlando Bloom! Hahahahaha! Good one! Lol!
don't tell him. it will go to his head
Master Distiller! Lol...
Since this have you tried their Oat only whisky?
You guys should probably invest in a random toast generator that would dream up nice toasts for people.
Koval is GOOD for the money
How well do the corks in whiskey bottles seal? I'd like to keep my whiskey in my safe (to keep it away from nefarious scoundrels and mooches alike), but I'm concerned that humid, still air may negatively impact the whiskey. Please advise, thanks!
Usually, they're solid. But for longer storage, I wrap my bottle tops in wax lab paper
Wow! Thanks for the reply! I'll be sure to try that.

Intro: Whisk(e)y Vault the Musical
since its half bottles, does it count as 1.5 for the sainthood? And since they are 2, 0.75 per person? Together when they unite they will become saints? ;p
Would like to hear your opinion on the Koval "oat" really smooth!
CHICAGO!!!!!!!!! YES :D
you have never done a straight jack daniel no.7 review... is this a "if you dont have anything good to say..." kinda thing?
They have used it to compare to other Jacks. If I remember correctly, they preferred Old No. 7 to gentleman jack.
but they didnt taste or review it
sayak panja Well, that’s kind of a review in itself isn’t it?
Whisk(e)y poem.......
Whisky II
Sunshine in my glass
Simple and truthfull
Fiesty, full of sass
experienced, old, yet youthfull
Pleasing to the eye
Easing to the mind
A magnifying glass
To life, forth and hind
If savorly tasted
And properly paced
Your time shan't be wasted
And rid be your haste

So serious question. How do you all deal with deliveries and the security of them? With all these explosions and bomb packages I'm hoping you take precaution. I'm not sure how close this is all happening to you, but I still, I hope you all play it safe and know a suspicious delivery from an innocuous one.
Yeah, luckily they caught that guy this morning. Sort of. He blew himself up
Whiskey Vault. Sort of a hollow victory, but hopefully the insanity has been stopped now.
I just got the rye offered to me :D
Gulliver travels ?
A hobbits tale....
Jameson 12-year Distillery Reserve
my second viewing, Daniel are you a Gluton free type of dude
Only when I'm trying to drop some weight.
3:50 although the heads and tails can f+¢¥ up Your whiskey the can also totally destroy it? Are these not the same thing?
Does Daniel always turn into an Irish pirate when he does a toast? I think an eye patch is needed on toast for now on.
Also, the tea is pronounced Roo-Eee-bos.
Tis my neighborhood distillery
3,782 views, 330 thumbs up, and 001 thumbs down. okay, who let that one into the vault? Cheers.
It was REx
so is Daniel a Texan or not, or is he Cajon
All Texan/English
Rex likes pickle in the back, too.
Hello whisky folk. How do you whiskey? I: Magnificent ;)
I actually have a question concerning Chicago, that's why I'm posting it here - I don't trust Facebook ... We will be in Chicago in August and I would really like to meet interesting whisky folk. Could any of you whisky-wise give me a few tips which establishments to frequent :)) (pubs, shops, etc.) to meet like-minded people? I'm a small-town gal from Germany, and I fear I might be a bit swamped with all the choices there.
Thanks for your help, in advance
Still no views registering - weird 🤓!!
I enjoy your channel. I seem to get the information I need when watching your channel. Thank you. keep up the good work.
Thank you CS!
Not first.
lol
AstralVagabond super
Millet.. So it's bird seed bourbon. Finally something to share with the finches in the park.
How do I send bourbon?

Did i just hear Rex saying that he wanted to get into the de "tails" :D
