De La Soul on NWA Inspiration, Breaking Boundaries with Bob Dylan & New Generation of Artists

  • De La Soul has stood the test of time simply because they were different and weren’t afraid to be themselves. When you look back at their musical contribution it still pays dividends in the form of touring which they still do to this day. But, even trendsetters get inspiration from those around them and for the legendary group it was watching NWA in 1989 that had the biggest impact on them. The goosebumps…the high of just seeing how fans responded to their music singing word for word even down to the transitions sparked something that will inevitably take the group into more than 20 years of killing shows.
    Of course when you do something new or different you will be faced with opposition and they faced it head on. Hitting the stage with Bob Dylan at times or making similar moves just to break barriers of what was deemed “the usual”. Fast forward to today, Kaytranada opened up for Madonna which is incredible! Without artists like De La Soul, that wouldn’t be possible. It says something when these guys are still able to tour and are now on their 9th studio album. Longevity at its finest.

    De La is one of the greatest, yet one of the most overlooked groups of alltime. They're one of the reasons i love hiphop! #salute

  • @hgurwiP
    @hgurwiP Před 8 lety +41

    De La do not get the respect they deserve, they have one of the most innovative and creative discography's in Hip-Hop history, true pioneers of alternative Hip-Hop, from Prince Paul's production on the first 3 albums and the unorthodox sampling and song structures, to the fun and creative song concepts and flows. They don't have a single weak entry in their entire discography, 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul Is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate, Stakes Is High...so many classics.The whole Native Tongue collective was incredible.

    • @triXXareN
      @triXXareN Před 8 lety +2

      Native Tongues is more comparable to Beastcoast(Pro Era, A$ap Mob, Flatbush Zombies, Bodega Bamz, Smoke DZA ++). It was more a term/representation of groups and artists with a similar mindset and outlook on music. You can just imagine how hard it is to gather so many groups and artists around one project.

    I'd love to see a De La Soul documentary like the Tribe Called Quest documentary. Its great that they are able to stay together as a group when so many groups have broken up over time and even newer groups havent been able to stick together.

    Their being different is the reason I loved them. I am an 80's/90's kid, so I grew up with parents born in the 50's. I think we & they understood real music more. It was a time when there was great stuff to sample. So, because I heard different music, I like De La because they were unique in their flows and samples. Wow! Tito Puente opened for them? Wow. Loved when I was born. Anyway, I grew up listening to Gospel as well, and now that's about all I listen to because I LOVE JESUS! It's the BEST thing anyone can do, is accept Him. It's still fun to reminisce sometimes, but Jesus gets ALL THE GLORY!! If you don't know Him as Savior, please do it.

    I'm an "old head" (42yrs) from New York so I was around when hip hop was born and loved it from day one but it makes me cringe when I hear people my age hate on the younger generations. When we were young, adults hated on what we were doing and all it proved was that they were corny and out of touch. Let these kids live man

    • @iveywebb
      @iveywebb Před 8 lety +1

      I'm 38 & completely disagree with you because what your speaking of is not what's going on here. I HATE it because 99% of what you hear on the radio & see on tv is garbage. You know good & well we had lyrical, conscious, & party rap. Hell we had people who incorporated all 3 in one song. I can't & will not change my opinion cuz u, dude from De La Soul, or any other "old head" says too. I can't get with 99% of mainstream "hip hop" & saying I should appreciate what I consider a mockery is BS. I want variety in Hip Hop not force fed garbage
