3000GT VR4 All Wheel Steering demo

- Tested with a 1994 3000GT VR4. AWS is pretty visible in this video when I turn full lock. I turn full lock twice on each side, which is why you see the wheel pop out twice. At around 3/4 of the way through the video I'm jerking the steering wheel back and forth, and you can see it activate then as well.
The AWS system is same phase, meaning the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels when it activates. The AWS is controlled by a system of valves at the rear differential. There's a valve that limits the AWS to above a certain speed, so it doesn't make parking more difficult. There's also a valve that activates the AWS based on a pressure differential from the two feed lines from the front power steering rack.
The system is extremely stable for lane changes, and helps keep the rear end in check in corners. Professional drivers that have tested the AWS through slaloms say it makes the car feel "different" but they say it's also easier to go faster because the rear end doesn't slide out like it would with no AWS.
Notice the Active Aero front air dam in the video. It pops down at around 48 mph.
disclaimer: I am in no way responsible if you try this and do something stupid or hurt yourself, etc.
You have a lot of trust in those jack stands my friend lol
If feel any drop, smash clutch and brakes as possible to stop tires while vehicle making barely momentum cuz wheelspin then stopped.
If that car using grippy tires like LMP. It would send to smash garage back-wall in second.
Owning one of these and switching lanes on the highway you can totally feel when that 4 wheel steering kicks in, you fucking go to the side so fast and smooth it’s honestly beautiful.
did anybody notice the front spoiler come out
0:29 Thanks for the heads up, only noticed it because you mentioned it!
no problem
+bnr34ish I didn't notice that before. This car is amazing!
Thats part of the active aero system. the spoiler also pops up when the front skirt drops down
a c t i v e a e r o a n d r e a r w h e e l l s t e e r i n g
And i love the VR4's, takes me back to my childhood.
Thanks for the video , I never had the chance to see how much the wheels are really moving when we drive this beast.
if you'd be going at high speeds for example at a freeway and want to switch lanes while maintaining you momentum both wheels should steer the same direction to give a smooth transition. if they where to turn the opposite direction oversteer at high speeds might just kill you.....
Emmanuel Quinones Gutierrez they do that at higher speeds
This video made my evening. This is the first time I have seen a rear wheel of an AWS vehicle turn. I have not seen any of the these vehicles on street in motion. They are always parked.
🤫
Thanks for posting this. I have the same car and it does the same thing had I always thought the ass wasn't working properly since you have to be at full lock to se movement. I now know it acts far differently on the ground than in the air but your video helped me out. We now need to get one of those go-pro cameras and point it at the rear wheels while driving through some slaloms or something. That's where the real show would be :)
Awesome video, the active aero was pretty damn cool to see!
Props on accelerating slowly and not falling off the jackstands. Just watched a video of a guy in our corvette club do this by punching threw gears on Jack stands...
Thank you for showing that, many people dont even know it exists!!! Now do one for the active aero!
It's very subtle. Looks like it induces a degree of crab steer rather than counter steer. Then again you wouldn't need much for such a relatively short wheelbase.
I also noticed that the rear wheels were not that steady and only really activated when the front wheels are locked or close to it. Might need some attention.
man i never really never how nice these cars were until now man I would mind have a 96 vr4
Thank you, for posting this video. I've been trying to explain that the VR-4 does have AWS, but you can't really see it at speed. Gnarly vid!
That's cool man
Too bad cool cars are gone this's days.
Tight man... glad to see that your front spoiler works! unlike mine...
wait, what. The 3000gt come four-wheel steering from factory?! :o
Yes, ALL VR4 did.
yeah it was pretty common for japanese cars from the 90's. 300zx, rx7, 180sx, soarer, subaru svx, skyline and many other 90s cars had it also
JC Denton
Besdes the 300zx that worked like the vr4 for sure and maybe one or two others it's set up a bit different and not based off steering wheel movements
JC Denton the soarer definitely did not have it
I got the 1994 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4
I was waiting for a jack stand to fall an you go flying lmao very nice!
I have always wanted to see this. I'm glad someone finally posted a vid.
I believe after 95, AWS became an optional item. So some VR4/TT's made after 95 will not have AWS, due to the original owner excluding it.
Nice video, It was kool to actually see the AWS in action after reading about it.
It sucks that the AWS system usually leads to chronic Power Steering leaks later in the cars life due to rusting and other complications. Most owners have deleted the AWS system due to the difficulty of obtaining replacement parts or just removing it to save a headache later. I'm buying a 1993 GTO this month and the owner already has really bad Power Steering problems, doing my research leads me to believe that the AWS is the culprit but I'll have to see once I get the car.
HAHA That is awesome. I had a 6G72TT from the VR-4 in my Eclipse. They are great engines. I wish I had one of these cars though. That was just cool.
I am only here cause Tavarish sent me great vid
Thats Hot. Technology back in the day.
vr4 is such a nice car comes with a lot of cool features. aws looks cool lol
Won't hurt the LSD...Despite what the manufacturer says.
These stock LSDs withstand 600WHP of hell...A little resistance from the weight of the wheels working against it during 0% throttle won't hurt it. Unless there is a nother quantifiable reason as to why this shouldn't be done, of course ;)
vr4s were made to hunt and destroy supras all day. ONe of the few cars that when modified turn into a fucking beast keeping stock internals. And are basically untouchable as soon as you start working on the motor. I own one and ive seen others take on nsx, supras and 3000zx bottom line this car was made for autocross, handles like a pro specilly with slight mods and tuning.
Stock for stock - 3000GT, Supra, 300ZX, NSX, and RX7 were all right around the same. The Supra and RX7 got the good aftermarket.
the 3000gt vr-4 is one of my all time favorites! It's interesting how Mitsubishi steers the rear wheels the same direction as the front for high speed stability. Wasn't the early Prelude's system the reverse? I think Honda's was for low speed maneuvering. Both systems work well for their intended purposes, but they were too expensive and us consumers didn't want to pay the extra on a mass scale.
Cool car anyway, :-)
i envy the fact that your front aero is working, unlike mine...lol nice demonstration vid. thanks
@DocWalt
The rear wheels would point to steer but wouldn't hold with the front wheels. They straightened then pointed again. It is like a switch isn't quite catching or something.
Damn I love the ativearoe in the front!!!!
Man that's cool very nice!(:
Best AWS video ever. Dot.
89 prelude?
Congrats, nice vid.
Nice video, Ive always wondered how that AWS system worked....too bad my 3kgt isnt a VR-4...
i cant beleive that he trusted the integrity of those tiny insignificant car stands to hold up his 3K when it weighs like 3500 pounds
Excellent demonstration of AWS!
this is the reason why the 3000GT MR or VR4, a heavy grand tourer as it is, is highly maneuverable in traffic. Plus that with the ABS it comes with, you've got a car that's very difficult to crash
my g35 has rear active steering, pretty much identical to what you have, those vr4's were very much ahead of their time. nice ride! sounds great.
Always wondered what this actually looks like... Thanks, not as much as I thought it almost looks like the wheel is just flexing
It helps plenty when your going 160 weaving threw traffic
@08SilveradoLT
That's why electric power steering was invented. You could probably use two pumps one for each axle.
very nice video. iv always wanted to see the AWS steering in action.
:Not trying to flame you at all, I just know nothing about these AWD TT 3000 GTs. I gathered that you were in 4th. You had to turn the wheel either all the way to lockout or close. At 4th gear, you're doing like what? 50ish MPH at those RPMs? Who ever locked out their steering at that speed? or would the rear tires still turn that little bit without you locking out the steering all the way left or right?
all GTo's have active aero up until 1996. AWS was the one who stopped at 94
@ShinigamiRota weight loss is nice but since the VR4 is front heavy like most cars, removing weight from the front is better...also a good example is relocating the battery to the back because not only are you taking it from the front but adding to the back which balances it out.
@101real its has a electronic aero damper the spoiler has it..
Hay bro nice job iv never seen it work up close b4...nice vid
Jacks dont fail me now!
If all four wheels are off the ground and spinning, there is no harm done to the drivetrain.
@kao20xl actually you would have under steer under heavy turning on the highway
@fidgetingfinch You're not the only one, I built a supra turbo and my knowledge on the all wheel steering system is that it comes on these cars, I think the avalanche truck, but I thought the main vehicle was the U-30 Aircraft tow vehicle, as well as other heavy aircraft tow vehicles. Would love to test it myself on a car that goes faster than 25MPH.
funny how just a few degrees of steering change can make such a difference in the vehicle handling.
@MrFishertompkins Every single VR4 from 91-99 has AWS.
You can actually see the front air dam (active aero system) used at the same time.
the Mitsubishi GTO was made to be a Gran Turismo Omologato car, hence the name. in short definition, the car was specifically made for "racing"
@DocWalt
0:31-0:41 you have the front wheels locked one way then the other and the rear wheels turn but don't stay put. That's what I'm seeing. Not the part right after where you are obviously toying with the steering, which does show the system is not twitch sensitive. It's just curious to me. I've only seen AWS on a couple of Trucks before now. I won't doubt it if you say that's normal for your car. Not many people got the AWS for the 3000GT. Fewer knew it existed.
This is why foolz get owned at the track when they try to race a 3KGT VR4! Nice vid.
all GTO had tunable exhaust up until 94, AWS and Active Aero up to 96. Thanks
oh wow thanks i did not know that!
Today you really don't need 4ws for rear stability. Today active yaw rear torque differential in cars like EVO-10 Super-awd or topline Acura's SH-awd, take place from 4ws stability. But ,Honda's 4ws was more useful during U-turn's, but totally useless in parallel parking.
Yeah, well 3si talked about 95+ being optional with AWS, but I guess noone has any actual evidence so I'll assume it was forced on all years. I still haven't decided if I like the feeling AWS gives, its a weird one
Nice demonstration! I was under the impression that it wasn't recommended to drive our 3/S on jackstands. Regardless, great video!
~"bboyalan" from 3Si
Check out the front actice aero in 0:31 and 0:55 ! Cool stuff
nice vid man..ignore all the neg crap this made me win a 45$ bet that my TT had aws..its a first gen so yes it does..nice job man and the car sounds sexy
just did that a few days ago. it works!!!
@kompressor124 Naw bro I sold the car. I drive an Impala now. The engine will fit, but I had NO room for A/C or any of the other pleasurable stuff. I did have a functional sunroof though. That was always good enough. :)
@deathparade32 which is also why i find this to be a wast cause it has no real need or use for normal driving and the only things i can see you maybe needing this is for road course racing and or rally racing idk maybe he does do road courses normally i see awd on off road and rock climbing trucks and monster truck cause they really need the ability to take those sharp turns but again what ever idk it late at night maybe im not thinkin straight
looks like a cool feature, why would sum1 wanna delete it?
@kompressor124 When you have a bunch of friends who are bored, you find ways. Although the car did blow up about a month after we did that. :)
that's badazz, I just got a 92 VR4 and I didn't know they did that?
@2002j30a1 yeah I love sliding around.
Nice view of the aws, but you should never accelerate when your vr4 is lifted off the ground your gonna fuck up your diff
Realizing this is an old comment...but the damned book actually says to accelerate to 31mph (gives NO indication of RPM or that the car should not be in gear) to determine if the flow rate of the rear pump is in spec. The described procedure is to take the return hose off the rear pump and direct it into a container; have someone adding power steering fluid the whole time; accelerate to 31mph; maintain for 30 seconds; measure volume. Should be 1 cubic decimeter (1.06qts). I thought that was weird as hell.
I'll have to disagree, STi, evo and what not are not nearly as special as a VR-4. Sti and evos are dime a dozen and are just 4 door sedan with a turbo strapped on. 3000GT VR-4 is ground up designed for supercar looks, speed and exclusivity.
can you feel the difference in handling with all wheel steering
the honda prelude's 4ws is more active when in use compared 2 the 3000 gt
I'm guessing this was before they put accelerometers in cars.
Arthur Serino Correct, sort of. It had an accelerometer for the ECS (electronically controlled shocks) and another for the airbag system. Neither used for the all wheel steering.
But nothing for the 4wd. It and the downforce just made educated guesses based on your speed. The old airbag accelerometers were really just go/no-go switches, a gold-plated steel ball held at the back of a tube by a magnet. The airbag came at you at full power regardless of how hard you hit, how heavy you were, whether the seat belt was fastened, and how your seat was adjusted. Still effective, though.
I was wondering how it works. Thanks
very cool car dude my friend wants one his step father is a police chief and drives around in a gtr
wow that is so cool, why get the wheels spinning so fast? does it only kick in at high speed?
i wonder if u can take the all wheel steringoff of this can an put it on a diffrent car like a evo
AWS weighs you down not to mention that when it starts to fuck up you're looking at a pretty steep repair bill since working on these cars are almost like working on Ferraris.
I don't think this particular GTO has Active Aero, to my understanding, only 1st generation GTOs have Active Aero and being a 1994, this would be a 2nd gen.
Almost a year later, and another reply to you. The intercoolers on the 3kGTs are actually off to the sides of the bumpers, leaving the front open for the radiator. Also, if you can, check out the SH Prelude's 4-wheel steering. It's pretty impressive as well.
Mitsubishi 4ws is more advance than some 89 prelude awd, vr4 all 4 tires turns at the same direction for better handling, honda prelude when the front tires turn right the rear turns left, in other words they turn the opposite way, not as good whrn in comes to handling..
wow thats a lot less (turning for the back wheels) as i expected, guess it still has a big effect?
Kind of a rude, but intrigued question. How well will you say this handles compared to newer awd cars? This is really impressive to say the least. Do you know if you have to sacrifice the aero kit if you go with a bigger inter-cooler, or did they find a way to keep it? Thank you.
Is the Active Aero and AWS in all models? Like the base, sl, and vr4?
It was only on the VR4, at least in the US.
Active areo was on all VR4s until 97, AWS on all VR4s.
@aNINJApie Seriously? Got any pictures? Id quite enjoy seeing that as I had a 3kgt myself and currently a 3.5L 3rd gen eclipse.
@DocWalt 95-96 AWS for stealth was an option ;-)
Fantastico!!!
@DocWalt What year VR4, I'm a die hard american muscle kinda guy but I've never had an import and I have always liked the vr4's and was considering selling my z28 for a vr4, any year really
Thats weird when the back wheels turn to its limit the Engine RPM cuts down
@myckeee Maybe helps to stop a fishtail situation?
thanks for the video man!
Mind blowing
What your view on the removal system's such as the AWS delete?I know it removes wight but the real reason had to be that the rapid(under speed)left and right(such as s-bend)that can freeze up the steering momentarily. Thus removing the system + the added benefit of weight loss. Woulnd't the trail direction of the car be affected(thinking of the conversation of mitsu heads debating over, its so heavy/but look at the cost all ready ect. so added the AWS.not wllng to buy&try first just want exampl.
Lol@darthhyperion. This is not the only car with aws. Mazda rx7 had this. So did Honda prelude.
Not as dramatic as I thought
+jearss if it was more than that it would have a substantially create a chance of it flipping the car when steering at higer speeds
hmm interesting...i always thought the rear wheels moved in the opposite direction as the front wheels
