Thank you for sharing. You have a lovely voice indeed. I love the hymn lyrics, but I think this particular hymn is very difficult for most Christians. The melody is irregular, and for a guitar, the chord changes would be a challenge. I am a Lutheran (LCMS), and I don't want to be critical of the church composers who originated these hymns to the glory of God. However, they formed the music to the prevailing styles and format of their day. Some of our Lutheran hymns are timeless and indeed we sing them regularly. Others are difficult to play and sing, and because of this, we never hear them in church. With a shortage of trained organists to carry them forward, some of these hymns will never be heard. Lutheran churches with a younger congregation avoid some of the old hymns completely, except for a few. We need not go full contemporary in our music, but we should revisit how to do the older ones better. I am of the humble opinion that we can and should think outside of the box, and that some of our old hymns, those with timeless God glorifying lyrics, should be modernized with melodies and tunes that are easier for congregational singing. At least, the hymns would continue, rather than just sit in antiquity on the dusty pages of an old LSB pew hymnal. That is just my opinion. Others disagree, it is just another point of view about hymnody, and how we might view the tension between tradition and change. Warmest regards. God bless. Soli Deo Gloria, JJF. 5/4/20

I don't think the problem is that this is hard to sing. Irregular meters aren't that hard if you can feel the beat.

John, I think you hit the nail on the head, "With a shortage of trained organists to carry them forward, some of these hymns will never be heard. Lutheran churches with a younger congregation avoid some of the old hymns completely, except for a few." We have so many theologically rich hymns both in our present hymnal and in our past hymnals that it is a shame that they go unsung. Another treasure is Walther's Hymnal as translated through CPH www.cph.org/p-21601-Walthers-Hymnal-Church-Hymnbook-for-Evangelical-Lutheran-Congregations-of-the-Unaltered-Augsburg-Confession.aspx. As an organist, I always try to promote music as it is known in the Lutheran tradition. I think the initial issue with some of the more difficult hymns lies in the ability or resistance of the choir to lead the congregation in singing the hymns. When teaching the choir or congregation a hymn from the early Lutheran church, it is often met with resistance such as, "This hymn has too many verses" or "The melody is like a durge." That upfront places a large challenge for musicians and pastors alike who try to promote historical Lutheran music.
O Lord, have mercy on us!
      Jeff

Its really far fetched to think a victim of sex crimes should be isolated. Its. Rare. Its news material.
