Badd Medicine here and its Underworld reaction time
Underworld tells the story of Selene (Kate Beckinsale) a Death Dealer bent on destroying the lycans who allegedly killed her family. She discovers that the lycans are pursuing a human, Michael Corvin, for experimentation; Selene captures Michael herself to find out what the lycans are up to. Along the way, Selene not only discovers a mutinous plot to destroy the vampire Elders, but also a shocking revelation about her father figure Elder, Viktor.
The vampires and lycans are not supernatural creatures, but rather the product of a mutation of the Plague. It is revealed in the film that Alexander Corvinus is the first of the vampire and lycan lines. He was the only survivor of the plague that wiped out his village. Somehow, his body was able to mutate the pathogen, mold it to his own benefit. He had three sons, two of whom inherited their father's immortality and were bitten, one, Markus, by a bat, and the other, William, by a wolf, resulting in the vampire and werewolf lines. Corvinus's unnamed third son, who did not inherit immortality, also carried the Corvinus Strain as an exact duplicate of the original pathogen, hidden away in his genetic code and passed along to his human descendants through the centuries.

I can't believe this is the 1st time you watched this. Selene is one of my favorite badass vampires (checkout Blade also). Lucian is also an interesting character. He has his own origins movie. They actually replaced the Kraven actor there.
About werewolves, I would saw Van Helsing has the absolute best design!
U should watch Van Helsing is in the same universe as Underworld. 2004. U should react to it! But nit sure how they are related. It might be spoilerish. Fans of Both will be able to tell. Haven't watch any of these in more than a decade!

Selene‘s entire get up is sooooo iconic. The suit, the coat, the hair, her guns, everything. And most importantly, Kate Beckinsale‘s performance!🔥

Seriously? The suit, the coat, the hair, her guns... none of that made this film successful. Kate Beckinsale's ass in leather is what carried this film.

When I saw that black coat of hers I'm like "I want that coat!" I still want it this coat isn't split up the back it's got a lot of flare & the designs are so cool.
Some things I really love:
-The blue eyes of the vampires
-Michael Sheen as Lucien is just sooo good
-Amelia is pretty amazing, her attire is also stunning
-The behind the scenes/gag of the movie is so funny to me
-The Lycan’s are real suits with people inside them, the mimics are controlled by tec
-The casting of this movie is just *chefs kiss*

The large werewolf is named Raze and played by Kevin Grevioux. He's actually a huge comic fan and wrote many of the underworld comics, including adapting them into these movies. Also that deep voice is his natural voice.
Damn imagine what he could do with that voice i hope he voices some characters in games and animated shows.

This film has no comparison to Twilight, it's much better, Underworld is one of my favorite films, there are 6 in total, and they are very good.

There were some interesting behind the scenes dynamics in this film. Michael Sheen (Lucien) was Kate Beckinsale's ex and the father of her daughter. But Kate became involved with Len Wisemen (the director) during the movie and they were engaged by the time it hit theaters. So Len had to direct his girlfriend/fiancé in scenes with her movie love interest and her ex. The director's cut with commentary was had some hilarious side notes about that.
The film was based in Budapest not London. So continental Europe. Not the tiny little UK I live in lol Can't wait for the next one! - 'Budapest is the capital city of Hungary, a country in Central Europe, and the location where most of the events in the Underworld series take place. The Vampire mansion Ördögház and the nearby small town of Szentendre are also located on the western banks of the Danube.'
Its funny that the Corvinus family is not Hungarian at all. Corvinus was actually a Romanian family that owned Corvin Castle that is in Romania.

This is my favorite Werewolf/Vampire series. You guys have to watch Underworld 2: Evolution and Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans.
Fun Fact: Kevin Grevioux, the writer of this series, was actually in the movie. He played Raze, the HUGE Black badass werewolf.
The differences in appearance of the Lycans is explained in the second and third movies. And it makes perfect sense.
There's also the Bloodwars one I think the second to last one, before the one that's set before the first one that's just all Lucian's background story. Watched all of them for the first time with my dad. Went under the sheets, looked away, covered my ears back then but I ended up watching the first two like ten times. Ugh love this series
If I wrote a character that I planned to play, I would also pick the badass hulking dude

@@NikhilChaudhariimbevda Correction, in order it was Underworld: Endless War (animated movie much like The Animatrix), then Underworld 4: Awakening and Underworld 5: Blood Wars. But honestly I didn't care for them as much as the original trilogy.

I miss when vampires and werewolves were made like this. A great time for the genre. Great reaction from you guys, as always. I hope you continue watching the saga. They sold themselves for money halfway through, but it's still worth watching.
Really happy you guys recognized Michael Sheen as the head vulturi in twilight! He is an amazing actor that can appear so different in each role. If you wanna see him act in the complete opposite of the characters you've seen him as I recommend Bright Young Things (which he filmed directly after this movie) and Good Omens.
He was also quite different in Frost/Nixon and as Tony Blair in the Queen. He's one of my favourite actors due to his versatility
He was living with Kate Beckinsale for years when this was filmed. Kate ended up leaving him to marry this director.
My mother HATED me when I pointed that out to her lol still does when I bring it up.
Twilight and Underworld are two totally different genres, the first is angsty-teens-with-fangs (unintentional) parody and the second is an actual Goth-Punk Vampire drama with some amazing actors and an Attitude right out of the Vampire the Masquerade franchise.
When the trailers for this hit theaters, a lot of us who played V:tM legit thought this was a licensed movie (and so did White Wolf, who sued over it). A lot of the look and feel, the weapons, the powers, even the terminology were right out of the World of Darkness. No chance the writer hadn't played.

If you are into V:TM, there was a 1 season series called Kindred, the embraced which I THINK came out after this. It only went one season as the main character actor was killed in a car accident in real life.
Abomination is also a World of Darkness term for Werewolf turned Vampire.
@@sutekh233 Oh, I remember Kindred the Embraced! I liked Daedalus(?) but mostly the show was quite tame and didn't really respect the lore. It did have some promise but it's been ages since I saw it. The lead actor did actually die, I'd almost forgotten why the show went downhill.
Underrated movies, and, Kate Beckinsale was Crush-Worthy in both these and Van Helsing.
And it's always good to see Bill Nighy smash a role out the park.

Yeah this was that point in NIghy's career (a few years after his breakout performance in "Love Actually) where he was appearing in just about everything.
This franchise was mind blowing when I It came out and totally new for the vampire world. I saw a BTS where they said in movies like the matrix they can fire the guns and behind the sunglasses be blinking every shot, but they wanted them to show their eyes and not blink at all. They worked hard to get them firing these weapons without any blinking as like a cool vampire thing. I thought that was a cool addition.
Nah it was nothing new. I remember i was there. Everyone in the know could see it was lifted right off Vampire the Masquerade
This and Blade were the first real vampire movies I'd seen and I still love them. It's a toss up daily if I like this OG Underworld or Underworld: Rise of the Lycans the best. I love Kate Beckinsale in this, but damn Michael Sheen kills it too. I hope you'll keep on this series!
sorry to comment twice, but a part that always fascinated me was that they trained the actors, especially the vampires, not to blink when firing the weapons. it’s just awesome.

Love revisiting this series with reactors!! Kate Beckinsale was a staple of my gritty vampire obsession growing up. I used to watch all the behind the scenes for all these movies too and loved how much fun she had making them. She trained to fire the guns without blinking and just added so much intensity to the role - this is gonna be a fun ride!
Len Wiseman designed the suit Kate Beckinsale wore in that movie, and they later became a couple.
You realize they're mostly making fun of the whole thing in this reaction.

What's so great about this movie is that it was able to flesh out the backstory of the vampire-Lycan war.
Other vampire vs. werewolf movies never bothered to explain the war between the two factions.
Something I love about Viktor is that he’s just so old and so powerful, an elder vampire, that he came out on top against even a hybrid who can move so fast its basically *teleporting*.
He rallied himself after getting tossed around by the hybrid, which was just as big a threat as he’d feared, and came back swinging and ended up about to take Michael out
If Selene hadn’t intervened with the sword, I think Viktor would have absolutely still ended victorious because he was choking a helpless Michael to death, about to rip off his head when his own head got bisected
@lightswitch1483yeah that’s one thing on rewatch that I always disliked. Amelia is an elder. Maybe not as powerful as Viktor or Michael but a-lot stronger than the average Vampire. She should have been able to take out a few herself.

Also, in hindsight, Viktor beating Michael is way less impressive when one remembers that until like two days ago, Michael was a hospital intern with no combat skills, and he’s going up against a 1400 year old strong and fast vampire lord while Mike only has “strength and super speed but no fighting experience” as his only perks
Viktor's advantage was that he was a warlord who had saw lots and lots of battle.
The fact that The Oak noticed the Volturi guy so quickly IS INSANE. lol I have so much fun watching you guys lol
Kate Beckinsale is just smokin in this role. It’s a solid film *no spoilers on the other films* for me, it just one for those films like The Mummy with Brendan Fraser, that you can just watch over and over on a rainy day, a chill day. It’s super entertaining. Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this film. Btw idk who they got as weapon master or armorer but the weapons and gadgets in these films are top notch. A lot of bad ass stuff

No comparison for me. This is definitely near the top of my supernatural creatures film list. This and the second one actually 😊
I really enjoyed the third one, especially the revolution of the werewolves part of it.
When including the second one. I like how they complete the explanation of the mythology/legend of this version of vampires and "werewolves" I like that they created a brand new coherent/cohesive mythology of vampires. Not just the bloodsucking undead.
The thing with the Lycans in this series is that they are actually closer to traditional werewolves than Twilight shape shifters. Twilight is actually just a shapeshifting from human to wolf completely, but traditional werewolf lore usually depicts a human-wolf amalgamation. They are usually bipedal, and have more of a short snout and humanesque hands, mostly just making a normal human look beastly and in turn making a simple large dog have more of a threatening aura. Give a wolf thumbs and the ability to grapple or climb? More terrifying to me than a normal wolf imo.
One difference is also a shape shifter turns at will but a werewolf often has no choice or control over it.
Shane's acting was brilliant for his character. He also gave the performance the director wanted.
This is my favorite vampire franchise. I remember watching this as a kid and being so fascinated by the lore. Hope yall enjoy!!❤

The "werewolves" in Twilight weren't werewolves. They were shape-shifters, so I'm not sure it makes a great comparison. There are true werewolves in the Twilight universe, but we never saw/met one. To me, the werewolves in this movie were relatively similar to how werewolves are typically depicted. They're typically bipedal (like humans), hairy, and the body tends to look like neither wolf or human, but have aspects of both. I don't think they did terribly with their depiction of werewolves myself, but I understand what you're saying.
The thing that bothers me about Twilight's shape-shifters and the hate they have for vampires like a natural reaction.... that would make sense with werewolves, but... shape-shifters? Idk 😅
I’m always confused by this… in the movie Jacob said “did you know Quileutes are supposedly descended from wolves”…. I don’t remember hearing the word “shapeshifter” at all. Was that mentioned in the book and changed for the movie?
They’re lycans in Underworld, not werewolves. Lycan can change form at will at any time of day, whereas werewolves can only change on the full moon
@@stephwells2156yes in Breaking Dawn, the book, it’s revealed that Jacob and his tribe aren’t werewolves but shapeshifters. Werewolves are mentioned but we never see any. The movies just made them werewolves
@@Electro_Patronum That's a great point as well. It seems like neither of these movies are even werewolves nor are they the same as each other, so can't really be compared to each other.
What an awesome pick! I remember being obsessed with the Underworld movies as a kid/teen. You just don’t get vampire /werewolf movies like this anymore.
It's really weird, but I absolutely love this film series. I have a wide and varied palette for films but this one took me by surprise because I never was much of a fan of the typical werewolf or vampire film. This one was different. Really thoughtful story, expertly setting a mood and brilliant VFX for the time. And the great Bill Nighy to boot?? It's become one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Not perfect, but terrific fun. It's the kind of movie that I would happily revisit on a stormy Saturday night.
The big guy with the ultra deep voice is the creator and writer of the franchise. 6 movies, a video game and a mini series is not a bad creation. The plan was to create a whole new monster universe and even managed to get to Frankenstein.

Lycans and Werewolves are technically separate species. You'll learn more about this in the 2nd and 3rd movies. If you want to see a really fantastic werewolf, check out Dog Soldiers. I think it's the best werewolf design of all time.

If I remember correctly, Michael become MUCH stronger in the subsequent movies.
I honestly really enjoyed the entire series, and they do have some really creative tales on the mythos of Vampires and Werewolves (Lycans).
The first two of this franchise is the most enjoyable for me! Talking about werewolf, another one that interesting is the werewolf in Van helsing with Hugh Jackman in it! (Kate Beckinsale is in it too!) Another movie that contains vampire and werewolf element. If you guys have never watched it. I'd love to see you react to it!

Plus I absolutely loved the practical effects of the Lycans, I was obsessed in watching how they were created in the behind the scenes featurettes

Selene is one of my favorite characters in fiction. This is random but anytime a video game lets me create my own character I always end up trying to recreate her Lol right down to the badass Trench Coat she rocks
Filmed in Czechoslovakia. Based on the Underworld comic book created by Kevin Grevioux, who plays the giant werewolf Raze. The practical effect of Lucian chasing after the speeding car was ingenious. The car was dragging a platform where the stuntman playing Lucian was running on after the car. No matter how fast the car was going, the running stuntman will catch up to the car!
IMO the sequel was as good as the sequels to The Terminator and Alien.
Czechoslovakia dosn't exist anymore since the 90s. That would be the Czech Republic and Slovakia today.
Michael Sheen is just working his way through the supernatural pantheon: he's been a werewolf, a vampire, and an angel. I wonder what else.
You'll enjoy Rise of the Lycans, it shows the daughter story. Werewolves are bad ass in the film. The cgi improves with each film. Some of the installments aren't memorable, but overall, the franchise is great.
I would say Rise of the Lycans should have been the first movie to react to. What Selene said at the start of this movie was a recap of that movie and the vampire banished in the second movie is also in the Rise of the Lycans film as well.

Yeah... Lucian's story is part of the big twist, after all. It's the same as watching the Star Wars prequels first. Empire Strikes Back just isn't the same if you already know about Vader's relation to Luke.
I love these movies. The thing that irked me a little about Amelia being killed is that she’s a powerful elder who knows how to fight so her death was kinda anticlimactic lol but these hold up even now. Glad that you guys are checking them out

Amelia was the weakest of the 3 vampire elders and her opponents are all old battle tested lycans. More importantly Raze was there the second most powerful lycan elder.

Omg this is such an underrated franchise!! I really love the dark and gloomy atmosphere/aesthetic. I hope you guys enjoy the rest of the installments. While they do go downhill at times, they'll forever remain an intriguing experience, and it always makes me happy whenever someone brings them up because it's so rare to find people I know interested :)
The Underworld movies have to be my favorite 'popcorn flicks'. They're a bit goofy and over the top, and I absolutely love just turning my mind off and thoroughly enjoying them.
*Fun Fact: "UNDERWORLD" was not only completely shot in Budapest [ Hungary ], the story plays also there. You can see street names and signs. It's an international co-production [ U.S.-U.K.-Hungary-Germany ] with an multi-national cast. The original score was written by Austrian composer Paul Haslinger. If you have watched enough movies, you can feel that this first part is much more European-influenced than the usual creature movies...* 🎞️🎬📀🎹💿🎵🔊 🔥😈🔥
Personally, I love the first one, but the second and prequel are both top-notch as well.

I love this take of incorporating science into the mythology.
Kevin Grevioux (the actor who played Raze) is the co-writer of Underworld and The Rise of the Lycans. He used the knowledge he gained as a microbiologist to add the scientific aspect. He also wanted to put in themes of what an interracial relationship would look like with preternatural creatures.
This series is pretty good.
“Rise of the Lycans” is a prequel showing the full story of how the war started. Graphics weren’t good at times, but a good enjoyable story. 👍🏾
You could watch that at anytime if you want the backstory.
When I was young, my dad and I loved watching the Underworld series. When Twilight came out, we went in blind expecting something like this….I’ve never been so disappointed 😂

If not for this, i probably never would have even READ Twilight. This is the superior vampire movie.
The trilogy is great, the prequels are great, but I wasn't a fan of the continuation. The quality dipped way down in my opinion.
But i won't tell you not to watch all of them. Definitely do all of them.😂

Kate is one who suggested Michael sheen for the franchise they were already in a relationship and they ended up having a daughter. Split up and Kate married the director and continued the franchise together they also split later on.
I think it's great that they explore the conflict's history in the third movie. Underworld is a great franchise.
Watching them back, they're definitely early 2000's films that effects-wise don't hold up. Either way I don't care because the story is great, they built a world lore and history which I'm always a sucker for, and the mix of Victorian and punk goth aesthetic of the Vampires/Death Dealers definitely influenced my dark taste growing up. It seems like these types of "low" budget gems like Underworld, Queen of the Damned, Pitch Black, Reign of Fire, etc. were frequent in the early to mid 2000's that you just don't get any more. I miss when movies could just be fun and not major productions to get a green light.

You may have missed it but at the end when Markus' eyes turn black.... he became a hybrid after being "fed" the blood from a lycan doctor. He was an original Corvinus, the original vampire. The one bitten by bat. The one bitten by wolf is his brother and the first werewolf, unable to change back to human form.

I love this franchise, they’re a lot of fun. The second and third ones are the best. The werewolves are absolute units, I love them. The “dress code” was definitely inspired by The Matrix. Not very practical but it fit a visual style that was very big back then. Selene is a badass too. I also love that they are aimed at adults and not kids.
Great movie and franchise. The first werewolf, Kevin Grevioux, who fights the vampire hunter on the subway train and later talks with Lucian is also the writer and creator of the series.

For the most part, they're a hit and miss with people but I love these movies. Flaws and all.
But what makes this all interesting is how this all started as far as why the vampires and lycans/werewolves have been fighting each other and why they hate each other. 2 and 3 goes into greater details as far as this plot goes. I also like that how they were created is not supernatural this time. More or less, created from a virus that was passed down from the generations. Plus, its always a pleasure seeing Selene kick ass too.
You can definitely see the influence of Blade and the Matrix on this movie's look and action. Kate Beckinsale was so iconic as Selene they created a X Men vampyric villain based off her. Also they filmed this in mostly Budapest, not London if I remember correctly.

actually, Kate and Michael were dating while doing theater together when they had a daughter four years before Underworld casting. if I remember correctly It was Kate who recommended Michael get the part of lucien affter she was hired as the lead actress and main character. They were never married on engaged when she left him for Len Wiseman (director of Underworld) This is a fun true fact! Wiseman became highly jealous if Scott Speedman and Kate Beckinsale steamy sex-love scene! Which many believe that jealousy led to Scott notcast in later Underworld sequels as his character was killed off after Underworld Evolution (irony that the director who used his position to take someone else's girl was worried that his lead actor would return the favor)

Oh man, they’ve never seen True Blood and don’t know about the werewolves - or all the other shenanigans. I’d love to see their reactions to that! It’s like they started on vampire-lite and slowly graduating to the good stuff.

They are good enough, since we don't get proper urban fantasy adaptations for any of the decent book series that have been released over the last 30 years. Hollywood would rather remake Interview with a Vampire than take a chance on any other IP that isn't young adult romance.

I'm really glad you guys are starting this franchise it's a wild ride, fun fact the SFX team built the Lycans from scratch and and they hated having to bloody them up because it ruined the synthetic hairs they had to individually put in.
I don't know if it was in THIS version but there is a sex scene between Kraven and Erika in the extended cut.
To answer the question of why there was basically no humans in the film, my take on it is that the humans think there is gang rivalry happening so they are staying inside to stay safe.
There's NO COMPARISON!! Underworld universe is superior to Twilight in every way. The first 3 Underworld movies are fantastic! Please make sure yall watch Underworld Rise of the Lycans. Michael Sheen played Aro in Twilight but he's a badass as Lucien in this franchise.
Don’t know if y’all realized at the end when Marcus awoke. Just a reminder Marcus is one of the original brothers of the Corvinus clan, so the blood that leaked into his coffin was Werewolf blood and his eyes changed from blue to black(Just like Michael’s when he turned), hinting that the sequel is going to be against a now Hybrid Elder.
Also while we are on vampire movies, y’all need to check out the Blade movies either during or after this series. You will get both Marvel and vampires in one.

This is a great opportunity to recommend another Michael Sheen show. Please watch Good Omens!! He plays along side the amazing David Tennant (the 10th doctor in doctor who). It's so good and unlike anything else in it's creativity. You will not be disappointed (also it's petty short as shows go). And the second season just came out so it wouldn't be out of place!
I loved all 5! Underworld movies and am always so happy, when I see someone react to it. I hope you love them as well.

As you continue to watch this series pay attention to selene's eyes. Specifically her eye color. In the first film, it's brown when she's not very powered up at all. But when she goes full on vampire mode it goes blue. And later movies it changes.
The same crew who did the costumes for “dog soldiers” did the werewolves costumes/Prop design for this movie as well, Michael Sheen is amazing as Lucian MVP of this entire series
I was in high school when this came out so to me and my nerdy friends this was the peak of cool. And it’s still a fun movie to watch as an adult!

Underword is my favorite movie in the whole world it came out when i was 6 years old. It has such amazing lore and is definitely worth getting into. It is fs ahead of its time as far as the type of love it should have gotten back then. They aced it with the budget they had and honestly I wouldn’t change anything about it.. even kravens acting lolol

They've become cult classics, so I loved them. My introductions to vampires included the original book series by Anne Rice, and TV shows like Kindred the Embraced, so Twilight just felt like a teen joke to me. Loved Underworld when it came out - liked the 2nd one better, personally. But I do have a crush on Tony Curran, so I might be slightly bias ;-)
Be sure to hit the Blade trilogy as part of your vampire tour! Plus "Van Helsing."

@BaddMedicine Fun Fact: Raze (Kevin Grevioux) wrote the original screenplay for the franchise. He created this world. Then Len Wiseman and Danny Flynn McBride, not to be confused with the other Danny McBride, came in and helped write what we have today.
I don't know if I've even seen ALL of the films in this franchise, but the original one has a TON of re-watchability. It was on basic cable almost constantly back in the day and no matter at what point I caught it, I couldn't change the channel. I'm surprised you guys didn't rate it higher. Also hoping to see a trailer reaction to "The Fall of the House of Usher"- it just dropped today and it looks AWESOME!!!
I believe the guy that played Raze, The big werewolf with the super deep voice, was one of the main writers of the movie....someone that knows more can elaborate on that.
Thank you for the reaction! Underworld is so great and so much fun) Sometimes I wish that first film itself would be a tv series. We have a compelling story that kinda suffers from some straightforwardness and time limitation which makes the interesting ending a bit rushed and compressed. Imagine what it would look like with several episodes of extra time to give final twists some space, to flesh out characters a bit more, to throw in an extra drop of flavour.
Not filmed in London...Part of the reason that the writers and filmmakers chose to base the events of the film in Budapest was because of its Gothic architecture, and the other part was for the Central Eastern-European location, Hungary neighboring Romania and Transylvania.
The franchise and lore of this show is one of my favorite depictions of vampire and lycan society.❤❤❤ great reaction guys looking forward to the rest in your Underworld journey. P.s the whole movie skips the day and just focuses on the evening so to some it may seem like everything is happening in one night but in actuality its over the course of a few days.😅
