Five is a sacred number for Lord Shiva. Lord Shiv is ‘Panchānana’ and the five five faces of Mahadev represent different facets of the Supreme Being. These five faces are -
1. Ishan faces south-east and represents the Iswara aspect of Shiva.
2. Tatpurusha faces east and represents the deluded
3. Purusha or ego of Shiva.
Aghora faces south and represents the destructive and regenerative aspect of Shiva.
4. Vamadeva faces north and represents the healer and preserver side of Shiva.
5. Sadyojata faces west and represents the creative side of Shiva.
