    So I've just noticed that quite a bit of the new OLE equipment have very long isolators for the voltage in use, like they're about the size used with 25kV AC systems. Is there some conversion plan in the works or is this just using whatever is available even if grossy overrated for use on 1500V DC

      I am not sure on that one.

      I mean AC would be good for something like the Geelong electrification, for efficiency's sake, but it would be such a waste of money to replace Metro's power supply, so I sure hope not.

    What's the history of this line? Was most of it built with below ground sections or is it relatively new? I was aware that Melbourne had done a lot of work to alleviate level crossing delays by rebuilding above but the groundworks here look second level. Fascinating.

    • @damienzanic6273
      @damienzanic6273 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hey, the Frankston line was originally built in 1891, with it also extending to Stony Point, Red Hill and Mornington. most of the underground sections are new as apart of the Level Crossing Removal Project.

      @@victoriandriversview I can see a section where there's work going on, do they just dig down alongside a working railway or do they ever take complete possession and do it in one go?

    I worked at the old VR back in the 70's. I have the working timetables from that era. No I am not a collector as such, however they were given to me a long time ago. Leaving limited stops trains out of the equation, the running times from Frankston to the City are no better today than back then. It's an embarrassment. Yes I know there are more trains, with shorter intervals between in the off peak than in the past, but that has nothing to do with it. Back in the day off peak trains from Frankston and vice versa ran express from Malvern to Richmond, and if you wanted intermediate stops, you changed at Caulfield and waited for the up Dandenong train. Today it is basically the opposite with Pakenham trains running express. In the past ,Frankston to Melbourne could be done stopping all stations even pre "new" stainless steel fleets. by Harris and Tait trains in under an hour. Today we have modern faster trains, with greater acceleration and better braking, and supposedly better modern signalling, yet they cannot compete for time keeping with the trains they replaced. To be fair, the sections between some stations are very short, but notwithstanding that, for a train to take longer in the 21st century than in the past to do what is a basically simple trip, is a bit of a joke.

      From what I was told the trains run the same way as in the 1930s

      @@victoriandriversview No argument from me there, I think we are more or less on the same page. Funnily enough I also have time tables from 1920's and identical trips were quicker back then.than today; Less congested lines of course, but still better.times for same distance. I shouldn't whinge however, the Melbourne system is very good these days, even though I am not a fan of privatisation for suburban networks.

      I don't know why they never pushed to shorten the trip into the city.
      It seems like in a lot of cases they could improve this somewhat. More express services and higher line speeds maybe?

    That level crossing at 25.20 (Mentone) was where I had my first fatality as a Suburban Guard many years ago, the trains crossing as we see here was exactly what happened that afternoon and was a causative factor. Look, listen and never take anything for granted !!
