    1 mi = 1.6 km
    1 kg = 2.2 lbs
    1 meter = 3.3 ft
    1 ft = 12 in
    1 in = 2.54 cm
    25 degC = 77 degF (nice day for a walk)
    Size 10 = 41-42-ish EU
    i had an entire credit hour dedicated to this it's practically burnt into my mind.
    My question to the yanks is... Why fractions? Just why? Why can't you just say .375 instead you have to use 6/16th inch? Just why? I can immediately visualize 37-ish% towards a full inch but i need to think real hard for 32/257th of an inch.
    Thankfully at the very least most of your gun calibers are decimals. 300 BO, 357 mag, 22 LR, 50AE, 223 Rem, 40 S&W, etc. Barrel length too. 12.5 in, 16 in, 20 in, etc.

      i dont know the real reason, but fractions help more with engineering and construction more. though we wouldnt ever use 6/16 since that simplifies to 3/8, but its just something to do with jobs here, like cutting metal and wood, since tools like measuring tape simply dont have decimals on them here, so its just easier to use the fraction. if you grew up here, it does make sense, but not if you didnt and grew up with a different standard.

      England and other Germanic-speaking countries of Northern Europe formerly used various standardised "stones" for trade, with their values ranging from about 5 to 40 local pounds (2.3 to 18.1 kg) depending on the location and objects weighed. We're taught metric in school. What we don't have is frame of reference. We don't grow up being told "that person is 160 cm", we are told "that person is 5'2''". We have to stop and do the math to figure out how tall 160 cm is. A lot of us know how to convert, we just don't instantly know how big a metric measurement is.

      @@kgoblin5084eh i'd dispute length, as a delivery driver. i legit switched from miles to kilometers for a while and found it to be incredibly helpful. also, centimeters and millimeters help capture small lengths better than inches and (rarely-used) mils.
      in terms of area, acres are just large enough to be hard to wrap my head around, and square feet just too small. square meters strike that ideal resolution for houses, square centimeters and millimeters for small things, and square kilometers for large things.
      fluid volume on the other hand, i like our power of 2 system of tablespoons to gallons better than metric. teaspoons are the one exception (1/3 tablespoon) but beyond that, 8 fluid ounces to a cup and everything else is just a multiple of 2 from the next smaller size. it's all extremely tangible and easy to understand.

      My favorite fact is that decades ago (I think the 50's or 70's) their was a government initiative to break the American people off the Imperial System and learn the metric system. Teachers across the country collectively said "no" and so to this day we only know enough about the metric system to supplement the Imperial system. In much the same way we keep the penny so we can give more precise change

      It'd be more like saying "I have to walk 3/1890ths of a mile" instead of "I have to walk 3 feet." We don't use cm for massive distances.

      @@Bloodstar6078 "I feel the same but I know it's just because I'm not accustomed to it."
      No, it actually is a deficiency with metric length measurements; they lack convenient equivalent units to both the inch & foot... and because of how metric works they can't actually have such units either.
      It is very useful to be able to approximate distances in units > decimeters but < meters; & even better when you know that unit is approximately the size of one of your own body parts. With inches, the numbers are going to tend to be easier to work with than anything metric. Centimeters will be 3x larger numbers, millimeters will be 30x, while the very unused decimeter will force you to use fractions.

    • @dead-claudia
      @dead-claudia Před měsícem +2

      those who use metric just move the decimal point left 3 places and say km
      so instead of saying "i have to drive just under 2000 meters" they say "i have to drive just under 2 kilometers"
      nobody really does that for kilometers to megameters tho, since distances rarely reach that far (the moon's about 363 megameters away) without completely blitzing past it (like inter-planetary distances: 1 AU ≈ 0.1496 terameters, 1 light year ≈ 9460 terameters or 9.46 petameters).
      side note: imo astronomers should be using meters with appropriate si prefixes and not AUs and light years/parsecs.

      @ryangallagher8194 Před měsícem +1

      @@kgoblin5084 You said no at first, but then explained in many words that it is actually exactly that you are used to those numbers while trying to frame it as objective. Why does there need to be something roughly as big as an inch to make it work? Why can't I just be used to understanding how big, say, 21 cm is?
      By that logic, Farenheit is useless as it's too tiny a number. Inches also force the use of fractions constantly, as there's nothing smaller to work with, and believe me, I mostly have to use them when it comes to tools that are fractions of inches.
