      to be fair, Japan used to get better English voice actors. in past FF games, the English dub alot of times was almost just as good as the Japanese.
      but some people think that they gotten lazy over time, Kiryu for example in the latest Like a Dragon Gaiden, the voice is not very good. however Kuroda is still there as an option for people who prefer his iconic Japanese voice. still we know that there are good English voice actors, it's just a matter of getting the right people.

      Yep they are non union, cheap, freshmen with little to no experience. Meanwhile you can tell all the Japanese VAs are consummate professionals with tons of experience. I recognize most of them from other games and anime. They are all highly regarded in their industry. Meanwhile with the English dub actors I don’t know any of them from anything because they ONLY do dub work because they aren’t good enough to be real actors on original work. Square only pays for good actors in Japanese or when the game is intended to be English-native like with FF16.

    The English dub is a joke. The dub script is awful (the characters are bastardizations of how they are written in Japanese - practically unavoidable though because of having to fit English into the timings, lip movements, and body language of Japanese) and the worst part is that the “subtitles” are just the English dub script because Square was too cheap to get a real translation done, just like with the first game. And the English dub actors they hired are non-union bottom of the barrel. Lower than scale pay definitely. Cheapest they could find. Japanese VAs blow them all way out of the water. There’s simply no comparison. For projects like this where Japanese is the original design intention, they always get cheap English actors and only get pricey good ones for games where English is the original design intention (like FF 16). Those actors were really good and it helped that the script was written from the ground up for English. English overdubs of Japanese-native games will always be atrocious, just like they are with anime etc

    • @granturismo-megaspeed8988
      @granturismo-megaspeed8988 Před 5 měsíci +3

      It is okay to feel like that, but you must understand: it's only because you're not familiar with the foreign language, not supposedly because the voices in that foreign language somehow do not match the characters; they all match very well. (The dubbing team at SE is not dumb, you know)
      (I can't believe the comments here. I doubt they can even speak Japanese. Heck, I doubt they can even speak proper English! 🤣)

    • @Tohlemiach
      @Tohlemiach Před 5 měsíci

      The reason they don’t match the characters is because they are literally different characters in each language. The English script takes quite possibly the most liberties of any translation I’ve ever seen. In Japanese, Tifa is a very shy, mousy girl, basically like an average Japanese high school or middle school girl. In English she’s that cute bartender you’re never gonna ask out. Fucking worlds apart. Every character feels widely different.
      Technically you can prefer whichever one you want, but I think you should give precedence to the Japanese because that’s the one that the actual creators wrote the script for. None of them speak English, so it’s literally impossible for them to have input on the English script. They have to just hire someone and hope they know what they’re doing. So the English dub by its very nature is an illegitimate art form as it usurps the intentions of the author. It exists merely as a marketing tool to increase the potential reach of the product and has no connection to the authors creative output. It would be like if they hired an indie studio to do custom spell animations for the English dub. It wouldn’t match the vision and tone of any of the rest of the game cuz it would be made by a completely different team of people. That’s why dubs are objectively inferior products, by definition.
      So yeah, Tifa might be the cute bartender you’re never gonna ask out in English, but that is not the real Tifa that Nojima wrote, so I really couldn’t care less what you think about that character. She’s a fabrication of a marketing team. That’s why the English dub does not matter.

    • @granturismo-megaspeed8988
      @granturismo-megaspeed8988 Před 5 měsíci

      @@Tohlemiach
      I similarly never expect the characters to speak French or German. To me it's a nice bonus and also doesn't really matter. Similarly it's fine for those that dismiss the English localization. But do they even play the whole game in Japanese? Or do they just play with the Japanese dub plus the English script? 🤣
      That is your subjective characterization of Tifa & the other characters. That is not an objective observation. Tifa sounds like a shy girl in Japanese, sounds like a cute but undateable bartender in English - says who? 🤣 Nojima doesn't approve, huh! (Perhaps she sounds too old in French and too young in German! 🤣)

    • @Tohlemiach
      @Tohlemiach Před 5 měsíci

      @@granturismo-megaspeed8988 my point is that she’s not the same in each and he couldn’t possibly approve because he doesn’t speak any of those languages and I doubt he even knows how different two people can even come across in two different languages because most Japanese people are monolingual. So however she comes across in anything other than Japanese is just not legitimate by definition.

    • @chance6991
      @chance6991 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@Tohlemiachmaybe so but dude, I think the emotional impact is still gonna be far more significant when you know.. you can actually understand the language? Nothing against subtitles and I usually prefer them in things such as anime, but here.. the English voice actors are good and convey more than just the stereotype of their character, you might like the Japanese because you can rest easily knowing that it's always the initial intent of the writers, but they don't just have the English voice actors read off a page so they can have the game be in English... the actors study the characters like a Japanese voice actor would as well.
