    Shavers had always occupied a special place in my heart. I learned all about Sugar Ray, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Joe Louis, Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, Evander Holyfield. All of them. Earnie just always sat snug in my heart in the most perfect way possible. People we're to scared to fight him. I remember, just months ago, seeing his Wikipedia article and knowing he was still alive made me smile like a stupid school boy with candy. But now, I can't smile if I tried. #EarnieShavers

    • @jacksonnra1856

      One thing I always say is there are "period punchers". Look at old fighters who were the best in their era..Julian Jackson would kill most of the boxers from the 1920s just as Mike Tyson would destroy the heavyweights in that time. Styles and ways to increase power in punching evolve. Razor Ruddick would kill Ernie Shavers with that wide open style of throwing. What made Ernies punches strong was he turned his shoulders and followed through. His punches are actually slow but the fighters in that Era all fought that way.

    • @coachingconfidant2785
      @coachingconfidant2785 Před rokem +2

      what are you talking about? marciano had 88% KO rate because he had 0 losses. Shavers had 14 losses. If we count both properly by wins only Marciano had an 87.75% KO rate. Shavers has a 91.89% KO rate. If this isn't convincing enough. Marciano had 46.9% 10 count KO's not TKOS. Shavers had 60.8% 10 count KO's. Which means 13% more of Shavers knockouts came from KO rather than TKO. Also Shavers had more fights than Marciano so his stats are more consistent. 23 of Shavers knockouts came in the 1st round. I can Even add that Shavers had his last 2 fights when he was 50+ years old. I wouldn't count them personally, That would put his KO ratio at 93% Which i believe is more representative of his capability.

      @@coachingconfidant2785finally somebody that knows that they're talking about.
      Also note to add, when Maricano fought tko stoppages weren't as likely as the years progressed. They would typically let you fight on longer, giving Rocky more opportunity to actual KO rather than TKO. As all us real boxing fans know, the refs were much more lax in Rockys era. Which could very well indicate that Marciano had more opportunity to get actual KOs in his era as opposed to Shavers getting actual KOs in his respective era.
      Referees would be more likely to stop a fight before it got to an actual KO in 70s-80s compared to the 40s-50s, giving Rocky more opportunity to get the KO, but yet he still doesn't match Shavers numbers.
      Also, this isn't just a numbers game. Again, look at era and quality of opponents, physical size, etc. Marciano was knocking out mostly a bunch of blown up light heavyweights. He competed in a weak era, especially compared to Shavers era.
      Nowadays Rocky would be a small cruiserweight.

      Tyson may not even Crack the top 5 hardest hitting heavyweights. It was more so the combination of his speed, efficiency, precision , timing, in addition to his power that deceived many who don't know what they're actually looking at.
      In terms of "one punch power" I can confidently say the following hit harder than Tyson:
      Shavers, Liston, Foreman (no doubt)
      Then you also have the possibility that Cleveland Williams and Ron Lyle also hit harder than Tyson.
      Joe Frazier and Gerry Cooney both hit harder with the left hook. Mike had power in both hands so I won't include them.
