  • Learn how to work on your artistry and musicality as a flutist using my "Sarabande Exercises," available as a free digital download on my website (see link below). Based on the "Sarabande" from J.S. Bach's "Partita in A Minor, for solo flute," this worksheet asks you to make simple artistic decisions, applying them first to a simple harmonic structure and then to the full music of the Sarabande.
Explore phrasing, using your volume, vibrato and tone color to bring out the musical structure of your choice then change it up and try a different structure. This will lead to greater flexibility and more engaging and exciting performances!

That was a very insightful video. I've never broken it down that way, but it all makes sense now how I "interpret" the pieces with my own "musicality". Thanks!

    Fascinating. Played in high school.
    Gave up music for medicine.
Trying to find the music now. Love your tone.

Fascinating. I've played Sarabande for a couple of years, but I've never thought of breaking it down like that. I'm excited to try!

Hi lance I love your informational videos its very clear and methodical. I have a question though that's been plaguing my flute playing. Should i align the edge of the embochoure hole to the middle of the first key or should i align the hole to the key. I normally align the edge and do rockstro hand position and i have a rich and dark sound and honestly i want to have at least a hint of pahud's tone. I wish you can touch on this subject. I know this has been sort of a debate within the flute community as there are different styles of playing.
