I couldn't believe they fired him. What was he supposed to do? Give her the money and let her go?
That's *exactly* what the big corporate places usually have as their policy, yes. They absolutely don't want the liability of being seen to encourage workers to take any action that may result in harm to the employee, customers, or bystanders. They want the police to handle these situations because that absolves them of any liability whatsoever. This is a simple math problem in their eyes. What does it cost the company if the robber empties out the whole cash drawer and they even steal a few snacks on their way out? What does it cost the company in expenses if just a single employee is shot? Probably 100 times whatever is in the register. More even. So if 100 clerks stop 99 of a hundred robberies but that last clerk is shot, the company still loses more money this way. In situations where this math is not the case, professional, trained, and insured armed security contractors are used. You could argue that this is an immoral stance to take if you like. That's just not a game they're interested in though.
