Domke Photogs Vest Review

  • This is a review of the Domke Photogs Vest (and half my gear) showing the features and the pockets as well as what full load out looks and feels like. For some reason my camera kept readjusting the exposure, a bit annoying. I tried this a couple times and it's still 20 minutes long. Sorry about that. There's a lot of good stuff here and this is the review I was trying to find with little success. I hope you find it and that it helps you out with understanding the use of a photography vest and whether or not you want one for yourself. Thanks - Turbobuddha

Thank you for a very nice review... I could not find too many photo vest reviews until now.

I have one of these and use the back pockets for rain gear both for myself and camera and lunch! Well thought out vest IMO.

Good video Thanks. You're definitely right that a backpack is not nearly as convenient as a vest.

Thanks. Great video. You should make a video series.

Enjoyed the review! I'm curious though, do you still use this regularly or have you opted for a different solution?

Great Video, it was just what I was looking for. Thanks for putting it together. Now that you had the vest for a year, any updates? How has it worked out for you? What do you like most about it? What don't you like about it?

CZcams jacked my post all up. Anyway, if you're looking for a nice fitting vest with usable pockets, check out the Vested Interest. Their main biz is parachutes. They have standard vests and can make a custom vest in whatever config you can come up with.

Why didn't you show those amazing back pockets? So important for a photog to carry a rain coat in one of them.

I am trying figure out the size I need. I am 6'2" and 220lbs. You chose large. What size would you recommend?

Something like an adjustable tactical vest with larger pockets is better, when I find one suitable it will be purchased.

Steve, I have the same vest in black. Got mine 2nd user on ebay; this jacket was discontinued in 2014. While this has many pockets, it isn't best used for really heavy loads imho, being cotton. The number of pockets... did you include the pen/pencil holders on the front? 3 of them in a row. The Stealth Gear Extreme is polyester/canvas and tougher, and can be waterproofed... the DOmke is evidently for use in the warm (hence the vented panels). I see the Domke as great for a day on the streets or in the woods, that kind of trip. Your bulky cameras make me realise why I went micro4/3 :) The inner pockets don't seem to be designed for bulky heavyweight items. For comfort, I would only put flat items against my body in there, e.g. maps, manuals, notebook. The outer pockets are for bulky items and definitely stronger, but I'd put an inner bag into the pocket, not put abrasive items like lenses against that cotton surface. Great cameras you have, but I don't fancy being a pack animal... we have camels and mules for that. If I had your clobber, I'd not be investing in a vest, but in Ansell Adams station wagon! Makes me consider why H. Cartier-Bresson took that little Leica out with him. Would he be known today if he'd had an SLR and a tele lens? For a lot of gear, many phots get a wheeled trolley. Btw, these vests are popular with pistol shooters.

I was "that guy" back in the 80s, sporting my Banana Republic 'Photojournalist Vest'. I was a PJ back then and seemingly every shooter was wearing one, it was a natural and practical. I also have Domke's version somewhere in the basement. They are almost comical now, alongside with Members Only jackets, but man they were functional. Might dig the ol' vest out and deal with the snide comments, getting tired of haulin around a 50lb shoulder bag or backpack.

Indeed, ideally a vest for carrying gear should not go below the belly button

nice vid buddy get a blackrapid rs-4 for your battries and sd cards with the vest and you should have a super nice light setup, love the 40d with 17-40.

For me and my usage, I think the vest works well. Obviously not for everyone. I like the length as it places the heavy items a little lower and balances out nicely. Granted I've only actually used it twice.
With this particular vest, the pockets are flat. Of it fit snug, you would not be able to put a lens in a pocket. When I first tried one on, I chose a better fitting one. Thought it was nice. Then tried to put a lens in the pocket. Didn't work at all. Put on some tight pants then try to st

These look too long to me and would be a nuisance with kit bouncing off your thighs and is too baggy. A vest should be nice and secure and firm around the body so that kit is not bouncing around so it looks complete tat!
