I was playing this song in my car and my 10 year old grandson asked me who sang this song and what was it about. Now every time he's in my car he says, "grandma, put major Tom on". It's his favorite song. This song is a classic, it never gets old.

@@arcam8880 @Arca M song came out 11 July 1969. Bowie penned this one after watching 2001: a Space Odyssey several times, while very very high, and also going through a break up I believe. He said in an interview that it was the isolation that he related to. When the moon landing was televised in Britain, the BBC played this song with it. Bowie's pretty sure they didn't listen to the lyrics properly lol

In an interview about “Space Oddity” (1969), David Bowie explained : “In England, it was always presumed that it was written about the space landing […]. But it actually wasn’t. It was written because of going to see the film 2001, which I found amazing […]. I went to see it, several times, and it was a revelation to me. It got the song flowing. It was picked up by the British television, and used as the background music for the landing itself. I’m sure they weren’t listening to the lyrics at all […]. Obviously, some BBC official said, « Oh, right then, that space song, Major Tom […], that’ll be great, » « Um, but he gets stranded in space, sir. » Nobody had the heart to tell the producer.” 💙🚀💜

    "Planet Earth is blue,
And there's nothing I can do."
This line is my favorite in the song because of its dual meaning. First, in a more literal sense, Major Tom states the color of the planet, the only sight he has to see, while adding that he is helpless while floating in space, but he is also saying that the people of Earth are blue (as in sad) that their hero, the Major Tom who "made the grade" and went to space, is now drifting helplessly to his demise and there is nothing he can do. Nothing to save himself and nothing to save their shattered innocence in the wake of a hero's death

To me this is the storyline
    1) Space Oddity
    2) Starman
    3) Ashes to Ashes
    4) Hello Spaceboy
    5) Blackstar
here is the full story (a theory which we will never know the truth since starman has left)
    Space Oddity:
Major Tom was an Astronaut who was sent on a basic mission to orbit the earth, something happened to his ship in which he had to perform a spacewalk to fix, during this he made a major error either intentionally or unintentionally he freaks out and tells ground control in which they try to help him he can't so he becomes sad and goes through the stages of grief which starts with anger, he was angry at what happened so he said "This is major Tom to ground control i really made the grade" meaning I really messed up and he went straight to the depression stage where he says "Tell my wife i love her very much" ground control tries to tell him to calm down to where he went to acceptance "Here i am floating on my tin can far above the moon Planet Earth is blue And there nothing I can do" which states his space capsule went out of earth orbit and the began to drift off into space.
    2 Starman:
Major tom crash-landed on a planet possibly Mars, where he tried to radio back but was never able to but he got music from a radio station that he relaxed and listened to thinking of his plan to get back to earth or get off the planet. He possibly saw gods or aliens in space who he called a starman they began to talk to him helping him cope with what was going on, He is told to look out the window to see the earth and how close he could be and get back.
    3 Ashes to Ashes:
Major tom fixes his radio and radios ground control and this is a rumor floating in the command center, "I heard a rumor from ground control" possibly talking about a young worker who was a kid when Tom left earth. He fixed his radio only long enough to say one sentence "Im Happy Hope you're happy to" possibly stating that he is finally accented he will die in space, and ground control are sad hearing his voice knowing he is "Strung out in heavens high and reaching an all-time low" Meaning he is happy but he is hitting a low because his health is deteriorating from being out in space for a long time years even.
    Hello Space boy:
Major tom left they planet but in doing so he possibly died due to sickness. He is floating away covered in moon dust possibly heading to another planet which leads to the end lf his story BlackStar
    Blackstar:
Major toms body landed on a planet that has a small dwarf star as its sun this planet is tidally locked and is always in an eclipse at night. A race of alien beings find his body and take his skull and is worshiped as a god. His skull is covered in jewels for becoming a famous astronaut and now he is being worshipped as David Bowie is as he is the one and the only starman He is major tom. Starting off so small as a regular music writer to his major fame and to his death where he is always going to be remembered as a musical god

This was one of my first favorite songs as a kid. I still remember the time riding in my dad's car when I first heard this song. I remember I was 9 or 10 years old and first discovering and becoming obsessed with both this song and "Knights in White Satin" by Moody Blues. I was just blown away by both songs. My dad had a major influence on my love for music. I'd ask questions about whatever band we were listening to and he was more than happy to educate me. Looking back now I realize how rare it is for a 9 year old boy to be well versed in a wide variation of bands/artists such as Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Michael Jackson, Sam Cooke, Bowie etc.

Welcome to 1960s stereo mixes. They were mixed with _very_ wide soundstages and sometimes straight-up "you sing in the left channel I play guitar in the right". Designed to emulate a live performance on a set of floorstanding loudspeakers. Songs like this play with it a little. Some songs will straight-up unscrew your head like a lightbulb if you wear cans, and they do it by design.

I love this song, yet it makes me so sad, because it plays into one of my biggest fears. To be so terribly isolated from everything, and to have no hope. A cold empty lonely death. What a terrible way to go. But atleast for major tom here, he had lived his life, had a loving wife, a mass of admirers, fame, and a great career. So atleast he died loved.

Imagine the devastating feeling of getting lost in the vast emptiness of space, knowing there's nothing you can do to make your way back to earth, using the final minutes of your life to think of how far you've come in life, only to have it all taken away from you, slowly and painfully. Space, although beautiful, it is at the same time a terrifying void in which any information of it is unknown, except for the seemingly massive, but in reality, compared to the rest of our material universe, very small confines of our solar system. Although we may have information on the stars and planets outside of our solar system and even galaxy, any chances of us making our way out there is almost nothing. The world is a cruel, ruthless place in which the only mercy that is given is by living things capable of thought. Yet all of this is simply brushed aside by the oblivious human race.

Maybe they are born with different brain receptors active than others in society. I believe it is about making peace with the loneliness and true Ego death, that one attains true loving morality independent of societal influence. Selah My friends.

Geez, that was 40 years ago. Long time.
Wait, it's actually 50. That feels infinitely longer
Damn, I'll probably live to see this turn 100. It'll feel ancient then, like some late 19th century stuff from 100 years ago.
Shit, the roaring 20s are are about to be 100 years ago. I've always thought of those years as the start of modern America and felt they were fairly recent.
I feel like the expectations and norms I've put onto the passage of time are all crumbling.
Time is scary. I can't grasp, comprehend it, or set a consistent model of it.
    Like space, I suppose.
