Welcome to 1960s stereo mixes. They were mixed with _very_ wide soundstages and sometimes straight-up "you sing in the left channel I play guitar in the right". Designed to emulate a live performance on a set of floorstanding loudspeakers. Songs like this play with it a little. Some songs will straight-up unscrew your head like a lightbulb if you wear cans, and they do it by design.
I love this song, yet it makes me so sad, because it plays into one of my biggest fears. To be so terribly isolated from everything, and to have no hope. A cold empty lonely death. What a terrible way to go. But atleast for major tom here, he had lived his life, had a loving wife, a mass of admirers, fame, and a great career. So atleast he died loved.
@@quazisayeed9095 that's the idea, and even if he became the star man after his space oddity and at some point had a life on Mars, he never made it back home.
The clue is in the line planet is blue and there is nothing I can do, it was inspired by the famous photo Earthrise by the Apollo mission, Major Tom is so alienated by what humans are doing to this beautiful planet that he never wants to come back, he's told he's wife and she knows , looking at what's happening now in 2020, who can disagree? Bowie was a genius!
Imagine the devastating feeling of getting lost in the vast emptiness of space, knowing there's nothing you can do to make your way back to earth, using the final minutes of your life to think of how far you've come in life, only to have it all taken away from you, slowly and painfully. Space, although beautiful, it is at the same time a terrifying void in which any information of it is unknown, except for the seemingly massive, but in reality, compared to the rest of our material universe, very small confines of our solar system. Although we may have information on the stars and planets outside of our solar system and even galaxy, any chances of us making our way out there is almost nothing. The world is a cruel, ruthless place in which the only mercy that is given is by living things capable of thought. Yet all of this is simply brushed aside by the oblivious human race.
I truly believe it is an alegory for life. When ones mind is gifted with genious in arts or creativity they often feel misunderstood and very alone for the majority of their lives. Maybe they are born with different brain receptors active than others in society. I believe it is about making peace with the loneliness and true Ego death, that one attains true loving morality independent of societal influence. Selah My friends.
In terms of slow burning songs, Space Oddity is hard to beat. It starts very quietly, but this is a build up to the songwriting equivalent of an adrenaline rush. David Bowie’s singing is energetic and the music perfectly captures the spirit of space travel.
About a month ago, I was put in the back of an ambulance and drove to a mental hospital, i stayed there for 9 days. On the way there, the driver played this song. It has been stuck with me ever since. Thank you, driver.
-Spaceman gets ready for the trip of his life. -Ship starts. -Spaceman is still alive. Major thing on the news. -Spaceman goes out in space in his suit. -Some time later, spaceman realizes there is something wrong with his ship and that he is boned. -Ship wont go even though it is receiving instructions. -"Tell my wife I love her very much." -"She knows." -Communication is lost between spaceman and control. -Spaceman is lost, he floats away. And there is the story.
who the fuck is Major Tom?? i know Major Nelson and Jeanny.... but Tom??? (who the fuck is General Failure and what the hell is he doing on my Hard- Disk C:// ???)
"This is Major Tom to Ground Control I'm stepping through the door And I'm floating in a most peculiar way And the stars look very different today.” Now that’s epic
I've heard this song so many times but never listened closely to the lyrics to understand them. Major Tom dies?? I'm at work right now and trying not to cry. What a time to finally learn this.
Him repeating "can you hear me Major Tom?" over and over completely destroys me every time I listen to this song now that he's gone. I'm usually not one to listen to a bunch of songs from the same artist but I love so much of his stuff, just recently getting into his music and just between that and some of the interviews I've seen of him he seems like a real genuine guy. Such a terrible loss, someone I really would've wanted to meet
My dad met david bowie. He was delivering post and went to a house and asked to go to the toilet. Apparently it was a friend of bowies and he saw him doing the dishes and hsd a little chat with him
looked up the meaning for the lyrics. makes it more calming- yet also unsettling. i actually don’t know the “lore” for the david bowie universe but in general its nice and slow
"Take your protein pills and put your helmet on" makes me really emotional. There's still time for him to avoid his untimely death, yet he goes on anyway.
Ground control: NO MAJOR TOM DONT GO OUT THE DOOR YOUR NOT ORBITING THE MOON YET!!! Ground control: WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE STARS LOOK DIFFERENT!? TOM?! TOM!? TOOOOMM!?!?!!?
Safe to say I was caught off guard, didn't expect to find a MGS reference here, intentional or not(and I feel that this song should've been put into V)
1:49 THIS part in specific makes me feel an emotion I didn't even knew I had, idk how to explain it correctly but I feel like I heard it so much time before I even gained consiciousness, Yellow Submarine by The Beatles also gives me that exact same feeling, it's weird but comforting at the same time for some reason and I love it,,,
Sometimes I just feel like I’m lost in space and forgotten. PLEASE DO NOT EVER GIVE UP! I’m still HANGING IN THERE hoping “my day will come when I will be happy again”. That’s what keeps me going.,,trying hard to buy finding a way.
I dont know why but this song makes me feel really sad… When I hear it I can imagine that that this happens in Major Toms point of view, and the way he sings makes me feel as if Major Tom knew he was probabply going to die, but insead of regreting his choices and trying to go back to the security of his home on Earth he decides to apreciate all the beauty of a world he knows will son disappear...
I'm amazed. I've heard this song a thousand times or more, but only yesterday when I listened to it through good quality headphones I realised he is singing in a duo with himself. This only became apparent when the sound stage became defined through the stereo effect. I still can't believe I missed that for all those years.
My older brother's name is Tom and my name is Major. My dad always sang songs from this era; Micheal Jackson, Bon Jovi etc. I didn't come across this song until after he passed away. I'll never be able to ask him, but interesting to speculate.
1969? Geez, that was 40 years ago. Long time. Wait, it's actually 50. That feels infinitely longer Damn, I'll probably live to see this turn 100. It'll feel ancient then, like some late 19th century stuff from 100 years ago. Shit, the roaring 20s are are about to be 100 years ago. I've always thought of those years as the start of modern America and felt they were fairly recent. I feel like the expectations and norms I've put onto the passage of time are all crumbling. Time is scary. I can't grasp, comprehend it, or set a consistent model of it. Like space, I suppose.
One of the best,my lady woke me at 5 this morning she ate a chocolate weed square for a headache singing this song,so I'm running on ,no sleep today at work but the laugh was worth it..Wake and bake for her was hilarious ..Thank you Major Tom ,I feel like I'm gloating in a tin can all day..CAN YOU HEAR ME MAJOR TOM??
+Alexandre Righi A very astute conclusion. It's really the only Bowie work I'm familiar with. Now I'll make it a point to listen to his other songs. Thank you. An old jazzer.
@Matthew Boylan With all respect, Yuri was the first man in space, but he never stepped out of the capsule. So the lyrics are more fitting to Alexei Leonov.

Space Oddity:
Major Tom was an Astronaut who was sent on a basic mission to orbit the earth, something happened to his ship in which he had to perform a spacewalk to fix, during this he made a major error either intentionally or unintentionally he freaks out and tells ground control in which they try to help him he can't so he becomes sad and goes through the stages of grief which starts with anger, he was angry at what happened so he said "This is major Tom to ground control i really made the grade" meaning I really messed up and he went straight to the depression stage where he says "Tell my wife i love her very much" ground control tries to tell him to calm down to where he went to acceptance "Here i am floating on my tin can far above the moon Planet Earth is blue And there nothing I can do" which states his space capsule went out of earth orbit and the began to drift off into space.
2 Starman:
Major tom crash-landed on a planet possibly Mars, where he tried to radio back but was never able to but he got music from a radio station that he relaxed and listened to thinking of his plan to get back to earth or get off the planet. He possibly saw gods or aliens in space who he called a starman they began to talk to him helping him cope with what was going on, He is told to look out the window to see the earth and how close he could be and get back.

Wow your comment has 420 likes
Some songs are better w headphones huh?
I love this song, yet it makes me so sad, because it plays into one of my biggest fears. To be so terribly isolated from everything, and to have no hope. A cold empty lonely death. What a terrible way to go. But atleast for major tom here, he had lived his life, had a loving wife, a mass of admirers, fame, and a great career. So atleast he died loved.
Major Tom did not die well he did but he died in orbit or something around another planet due to sickness
Did he actually die in space
@@quazisayeed9095 that's the idea, and even if he became the star man after his space oddity and at some point had a life on Mars, he never made it back home.
The clue is in the line planet is blue and there is nothing I can do, it was inspired by the famous photo Earthrise by the Apollo mission, Major Tom is so alienated by what humans are doing to this beautiful planet that he never wants to come back, he's told he's wife and she knows , looking at what's happening now in 2020, who can disagree? Bowie was a genius!
Amon Drak wow wait to make me depressed
Finally this song is getting some love! Thanks venom
Is it weird that this is one of my favourite concepts for a song? Like, ever?
no it's not
Yeah, space oddity, and major Tom are 2 amazing songs, dealing with very similar topics
Underrated comment
I have an idea. What if he did it on purpose? To meet Ziggy Stardust? What if he died during the traveling part?
Someone with a profile pic as dumb as yours saying a comment as smart as that...
Dying space isnt painful

It only gets better from here.

-"Tell my wife I love her very much."
-"She knows."
-Communication is lost between spaceman and control.
-Spaceman is lost, he floats away.
