The home phone was ringing. Nana and Papa were on the other end calling Mom to tell her they had gotten so much snow overnight and she needed to bring us over to play. As we pulled up to their house, we saw some of the biggest snow drifts that we had ever seen in our lives up against their red fence. Nana and Papa lived on 5 acres, so it was literally a winter playground. We couldn’t wait to play with Jesse and Murphy whose family lived right across the street from our grandparents’ house. They came over, and we had the time of our lives! We built snow tunnels and had snowball fights. All of us girls voted to bury Murphy in the snow since he was the only boy in the bunch. He didn’t mind as that put him in the center of all the attention. They had this huge, sweet dog named Beau who so badly wanted to stay outside with us, but his short hair gene just wouldn’t allow it. We were so exhausted by the end of the day, but in the morning were we in for a surprise. We had the worst sunburns of our lives! Kambrie’s face had a beautiful tan glow with rosy cheeks, but Kaycie and I looked unrecognizable as our faces were so swollen and red. Mom hadn’t even thought about the sun’s reflection off the snow, and since we had stayed literally all day in the snow the day before, we had absorbed a bucketload of sunshine. (Who thinks about putting on sunscreen when there is snow????) I remember Mom felt so bad, and I insisted it was worth it because we had had so much fun and had never seen a snow like that where we lived.
In creating this song and video, I was thinking how snow is something untouched by humanity. It is truly a breathtaking creation of the Lord Himself. We do nothing to make it happen, but it is a work of God. Secondly, it is a free gift to all. We do nothing to get it. We do nothing to deserve it. “He gives snow like wool; He scatters frost like ashes. He hurls down crystals of ice like crumbs; who can stand before His cold?” (Ps. 147:16,17) Thirdly, the purity of its nature. I can think of nothing I have seen while living on this earth that is whiter than snow. The gleam and sparkle of it in the sunshine is unlike anything. While all these three aspects are true, it is a work of God, a free gift to all, and is pure in its nature/ quality, it is a choice to go out in it and receive the joy of it. This is a beautiful picture of salvation. Salvation is completely a work of God (Eph. 2:8,9). Salvation is a free gift to all (John 3:16,17). Salvation is the clothing of Christ’s purity/righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21). Yet, it calls for a personal decision. Some respond with indifference. Others with hatred. But the ones who respond in repentance over their sin and put their faith in Christ have a joy this world knows nothing of nor can comprehend. (1 Pet. 1:8) In the words of our Lord….“Come now, let us reason together says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.” Isa. 1:18
