How To Fix - Repair Laptop Ribbon Cable Clip Retainer - Removal & Install Safely

  • Ribbon Cables on computer Motherboards are usually held in place by a Retainer Clip. These clips are very easily broken and are almost impossible to find for sale. Often, you have to purchase a used or 'as is' Motherboard to get the clip. Even if you can find them, they are very easy to break when your installing it as well. This video will show you how to safely remove one and then how to install it onto your Motherboard safely. Without this clip, you often have to resort to electrical tape or some other means of fastening down the Ribbon Cable which is not ideal and can lead to the Cable easily coming loose. Feel free to comment or ask questions !! Please remember to 'Like' if this was helpful :)

      @@ThePASBERUK I think your talking about the port itself that is attached to the motherboard. If that is broken then there is a good chance that the ribbon cannot securely connect. You would need a replacement motherboard :(

    Alternate fix: The ribbon that gets clipped in has two sides, one with exposed connections and one covered in plastic. Cut a piece of electrical tape and stick it to the end of plastic side. This will give it just enough thickness to make the connection and hold it in place. If you're worried about it working loose you can either tape it down or put a bit of hot glue on it (the glue is not conductive, and easy to peel off)

    • @danvos6542
      @danvos6542 Před 3 lety +4

      The electrical tape suggestion worked for my situation where the black piece was fine but the white base was cracked. The connection was not tight but after adding the electrical tape on the ribbon cable and then giving it a solid push into the connector, the connection was tight enough to work again. Thanks for the tip!

    Thank you for mentioning that some clips attach differently. hearing that, I got out my botany hand glass and looked at my clip, and saw that unlike the ones you illustrated, mine is actually attached at each contact pointnot out at the edges.
    The metal of each contact forms a tight C shape, as viewed from the side, with the clip swinging like a gate in the top part of the four Cs and the flat ribbon inserting below the gate with the lower part of the C shape making contact with the underside of the ribbon. So all I had to do was reinsert my gate into the C's that I had pulled it out of before I understood that there was a latching mechanism here. It wasn't trivial because I had to get the angle right and I had to bring just the right amount of force to bear on a tiny little thing.

    Hi,
    I watched this video. But it wasn't helpful because, in my situation, and I think for most, it isn't the clip itself it breaks or it doesn't break alone. Rather, the piece holding the clip which is on the motherboard breaks. Just as you pointed out that the clip is fragile, so are the sides and if the clip breaks out of the sides, usually one or both of the sides do also. The question is, how can you replace that? How can you replace that rectangular frame that the clip holds onto?

    • @PC_Monkey
      @PC_Monkey  Před 2 lety

      This video shows how to replace a clip as its the only thing most people can do with limited skills. If the port breaks, then like most motherboard ports, its not easily fixable. It would need to be removed from the board and replaced or the board itself would need to be replaced.
